We’ve been to Oyster Bay Beach Resort twice in the last two years, and we’re very happy to be there both times. Our first room was in the Mainsail building, which is newer with a little more room and better layout, particularly the studios. All rooms are terrific, however, and the kitchens in the 1BR units are good-sized with all amenities (including dishwasher). The colour schemes and décor are bright, beachy and really tasteful. The furniture is comfortable (although the newer beds are much better than the older ones) and the unit has plenty of space for four people. The studios in the Mainsail have lots of space, a pull-out couch and large balcony. The older studios have no couch, less room but nice balconies. TV access is good, not great (but who cares?!), and the new free WiFi was pretty good all over the resort.

What We Love

The whole resort is much more laid-back and quiet than many. The layout means you can come and go without walking through lobbies, pool areas, etc. That said, the pool area is a great place to take the sun, swim or just hang out, with amazing views of the bay, St. Barths and the ocean. Most rooms have great views, whether they look right out to sea, or out the other side to Oyster Pond and the surrounding hills. The local area has a (pricey) store with a variety of goods, several good restaurants (including OBBR’s Infinity), and more within a 5 min drive on the French side.

The rooms are amongst the most spacious and comfortable for a 3½ - 4 star resort. A great base of operations, and the large balconies mean you can spend hours just relaxing and looking at the view. We love the infinity pool, and we love just being surrounded by the landscape of Oyster Pond. The people at OBBR were always friendly and helpful, and it is one of the few places that did not pester us to attend a presentation once. (They discreetly let you know that if you choose to join them for one you’ll get a free breakfast and assorted other goodies, but no pressure at all).

Lastly, we love: 1) driving around the island; 2) visiting many of the different and fabulous beaches; and 3) we are in relaxation mode at OBBR—so we don’t miss the nightlife of Simspon Bay, Phillipsburg or Cupecoy.

What Could Be Better

To be honest, this is not a critique of Oyster Bay, so much as words of advice. The beach, next door to Dawn Beach, is fine, but one of the least remarkable beaches on Sint Maarten. When the sargassum seaweed is coming in it piles up and stinks. They do a pretty good job of cleaning it, but it’s endless at times. We have never hung out at the beach, though we have enjoyed a few meals at Mr. Busby’s on the beach. So if you were planning to walk from your room to the beach everyday, you might be very disappointed.

Everything we love about the location would be awful if a) you had no access to transportation, and b) you wanted to go out at night. Even getting over to the restaurants on the other side of Oyster Pond is a long haul without a car. OBBR does offer daily shuttle services to various points of interest, but rental cars are inexpensive and fun, provided you like to drive, and like 120° blind S-curves on a steep grade with goats, dogs and you name it in the street—and we do! If you came expecting a beach, shopping and nightlife, I expect you’d be very, very disappointed.

Oyster Bay Beach Resort is a beautiful place that some might find a little TOO out of the way, but some will love. The beach is not much to talk about, but on an island with 30+ fabulous beaches, and with a great pool area, this doesn’t bother us. We’d go back in an instant, although as I write this, Hurricane Irma has just devastated island, so it will probably be a while.

Room Tip: Mainsail Bldg (but all are great), away from the pool if you want privacy

I enjoyed my time at OBBR. I enjoyed the view, the restaurants, the ambiance- most of all what happened after the storm. I want to thank and commend the entire staff of OBBR on how they took good care of all of the guests through Hurricane Irma. Hurricane Irma hit us as a supercharged category 5 on September 6, 2017 @ 185 mph. Before the storm we were well prepared. Through the storm we were well protected. After the storm we were well taken care of. It is always easy to enjoy a place when the weather is calm, bright, and sunny; however, there is a lot to be said about a place that can continue to deliver to its guests after disaster. Thank you OBBR. I appreciate all of you. I will be returning soon.

The hotel staff are very accommodating. We ended up renting a car for a couple of days from a company which was recommended to us by one of the staff members. I'm always a bit apprehensive with these things, as I've heard many stories of people renting cars and than being overcharged...we had no problems.

The hotel grounds are very nice. The atmosphere is also great. The bar area makes the best panini we've had and a great strawberry daiquiri. There are also a few restaurant with good food close by and a small store selling all the basics.

Rooms were clean and we had a balcony where every morning we fed the iguanas with freshly made vegetable and fruit salad.

My only con which perhaps I can't blame on the staff but I do wish we were warned about was the theft on the Island. All we kept hearing is how safe the Island is from everyone. Hearing this daily made us less cautious than we normally are. We left our belonging in the car for no longer than 5 minutes to take a couple of pictures on the Island. The area seemed completely empty but of course we did lock the car and hid our stuff. When we came back, my bag, our cell phones (with all our pics and videos) and my wallet were all gone. Only than we found out that this happens a lot on the Island.
