“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2012

Spent two nights here, over a weekend, without much idea about what it or the village were like it Having no expectations I was presently surprised about how pretty the village was and how good the accommodation was. I enjoyed the ambience of the bar, the food and the general layout. We had a dog with us and the fact that the accommodation comprised of a seperate ensuite room in what was essentailly a stable block worked well. The staff were friendly and helpful and there were no objections to the dog joining us in the bar when we ate, both in the evenings and in the morning, when we opted for the excellent cooked breakfasts (which were extra). When we arrived we were issued with a swipe card, which we presented every time we ordered any foods, drinks etc When we settled this bill when we left we were presented with an itemised bill and I found this very convenient. The only negative comment I would make was that the bathroom, which was windowless, was very tired and slightly damp, otherwise higly recommended!

Lovely room, great location and traditional village pub with open fire. But, menu too expansive and chef/cook/buyer not experienced enough. Olive platter starter - awful cheap bread, surely a bagette would suffice, cheap stuffed olives (5) and crusty old hummous. Chips from Iceland! Would stay again but would eat elsewhere.

We had a voucher to use and picked this hotel since it was a convienient distance for us for a night away.
We stopped off at Bearsted en-route and found a really nice pub for lunch before arriving in Chilam late afternoon. Check-in was prompt and we were given room 9 in the converted building to the rear of the pub. This seemed ok - clean and tidy, although the bathroom could probably do with an update soon as there were few cracked tiles etc and the white sealant around the shower had started to turn mouldy in places. We had a reasonable meal in the restaurant. I had the homemade burger which in all honesty was pretty good. My wife opted for her favourite of belly of pork, but was unfortunately left disapointed since (although belly is a fatty cut) it was infact mostly fat, and no meat. Shame and probably not reflective of our overall experience as service was very good and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere.
Sadly our hopes of a decent night sleep were consigned to frustration pretty quickly. There is a central stair case which allows access to the rooms in the upper part of the converted block. This staircase went directly over our bed and I would imagine the only reason this place is apparently haunted is becuase the noise of every arriving and departing guest is enough to wake the dead with the creakiness of the stairs. The walls are also paper-thin. By 6am the sound of another guests morning flatulence and morning-coughing next door served as our alarm call after the aforementioned ghost waking staircase, so I'm afraid we left more tired than when we arrived!
I should mention however that if you want to "feel the history" this a great place to stay. The staff have plenty of history to impart on travellers including tales of cameras and lights packing up in "haunted" room #4 and of servants tunnels that strech 200 yards up the hill to the castle.
If however you want a good nights sleep, you might want to consider something less quaint and with thicker walls!

We visited he woolpack for a family wedding. The Pub itself is nice with a good menu. However felt that the self contained family rooms in the annex were a bit pricey for the facilities. No Bath and one double bed ( the children using sofa bed / day bed).

This was out 2nd time at The Woolpack Inn and it wont be our last. The accomodation was once again brilliant. We had the same room as last time (coincidence) and it was just as lovely with a clean warm room and big fluffy towels! We had our meals at the pub, just across the road which has a great menu and very reasonable prices. There is a train station about 10 minutes away (walking) that takes about 10 minutes to get straight into the heart of Canterbury. The staff at the pub are very friendly and very helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room across the road in the stable block if you want a little bit of privacy.
