Had heard so much about this place and it didn't disappoint. It must be Marykirk's best kept secret. Really friendly staff and the salmon in my baguette was out of this world! Would go often if I lived nearer.

We went here for a Mothers day afternoon tea and what a treat it was. We've had some fantastic afternoon teas in some fantastic places but the food here has to be the best we've had.

There was a plate with wee espresso cups filled with a deliciously rich soup and hot haggis bon bons to go with it, they were rich, creamy and full of flavour.
There was a slate with a beautiful arrangement of scotch egg wedges, dainty open ham sandwiches with a delicious tomato relish. Rich, yet light sausage roll slices, beautifully soft brown bread triangle sandwiches and mini oatcakes topped with cucumber and tuna mayonnaise. I have to say we polished most of it off!

The cake stand was piled high with an amazing selection of treats, everything dainty and everything delicious. There was fruit scones with pots of butter and jam, the daintiest empires I have ever seen (so pretty) pots of raspberry pannacotta, raspberry macaroons, chocolate éclairs that were as light as air, banoffee tarts, meringue and marshmallow mushrooms, I've not even named everything and yet the list seems endless, there was even a separate plate with wee fresh cream meringues which were light with a delicious wee chewy bit in the middle.

Everything was served with tea or coffee, we chose coffee and it was perfect. The afternoon tea here is perfect for a treat, but it would be an equally perfect way to spend a chatty afternoon with friends.

I always love going to Balmakewan for a meal. The food and the service is always very good and there is a good choice of meals. As well as the restaurant they also have good deli items to take home. Well worth a visit.

Had a lovely family lunch at Balmakewan today. I hade the Fisherman’s Net selection of seafood which was finely balanced and tasted excellent. Only issue was serving it on a slate I can never understand the enthusiasm for serving excellent food on weird surfaces when a simple plate works perfectly. Still the quality of the food and friendly service was well worth the visit.
