A visit to Sutherland is incomplete without doing a tour of this facility. Staff are friendly, knowlegable and patient. The price of the tour is reasonable and goes to burssry funds for astronomy

We enjoyed the visit to SALT very much and if you visit Sutherland a tour of SALT is an absolute must.
It's an eye opener to learn about modern telescopes and the fact that the Sutherland observatory is an international site with countries like Russia and Poland, as well as Great Britain and the USA having telescopes here. SALT is phenomenal and awe inspiring. This massive telescope is very interesting to see. Our guide explained how it operates and we saw the dome roof revolving which was fantastic.

Very interesting. Guided tour was excellent. Pity we didn't see the constellation, because of the weather. But fortunately we visited a guy just outside town. His tour was super interesting and the sky was so clear, full of stars. We can recommend him definitely. Just ask your hostess to direct you, as I cannot remember his name....

The whole experience is simply amazing We had a stunning guide who went out of her way to explain with great patience and humour throughout the whole site visit . The SALT was just mind blowing . Be warned it’s cold up there and with the cutting wind be prepared clothing wise ! One of the great must dos of SA .

We joint the evening Star Gazing. It was an interesting experience but as well a bit boring since the group was too big and it took a long time until everybody had its turn to look through the Telescope. Also we were siting in an enclosure with an open roof it was quite chilly. Warm clothing and jackets are recommended independent how warm it was during the day. You are 1700m a.b.SL
