So we're cruising down towards Budapest, stopping at many wonderful places and today we've been to Bamberg. Sadly, the lock keepers are on strike and our poor guide is having to stall to allow the captain the catch up. She pauses the coach here and asks if anyone would like a look inside. Most people are exhausted and few go in, I'm one of them and boy am I glad I did. This is baroque at its peak, it's like eating all the icing off a Christmas cake. Go and be amazed.

We visited this pilgrimage church as part of an excursion on our Viking River cruise. From the outside, it appears like a simple chapel built out in the middle of nowhere. Once you enter the doors, you are transported to another dimension. The beautiful baroque interior seems incongruous to the setting, but also like it should be there...quite a dichotomy.

Truly beautiful Baroque church. The outside hides its ornateness beautifully. The little cemetery behind it epitomizes the neatness of the Bavarians. A lovely stop.

On a two week tour through 5 countries we visited many churches but this one became my favorite. There has been a church on the site since the mid 1400's but this one was built in the 1750's due to a major gift from a german bishop who was cured of some affliction on the site.
The interior is in the rococo style and the alter contains a statue of Mary and child that is said to be from the 15th century. The contrast between the white walls and the decorations of the alter and the pulpits is striking.
I have added a couple of pictures. Cannot show exterior because it is in portrait mode.

Our group took a tour near Bamberg, Germany to the Pilgrimage Church of Maria Limbach. It was interesting to hear of the history of pilgrimage churches in Germany. The church, while austere on the outside is exuberant on the inside. Beautiful place in the countryside. I would leave photos, but this particular for does not allow for that. Beautiful baroque interior!
