“Good but not great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2012

The Mandarmoni beach as compared to the beaches in Puri and Konark is not great but in its own merit it is good.

Most tourist information is listed under Digha / Mandamoni leading one to believe the two places are close by. The approximate distance between the two places is around 25 Kms . While Digha is over crowded and infested with hotels, guest houses and Inns Mandamoni is more sober and away from the maddening crowd.

The approach to Mandamonis can be confusing. More than once we were not sure we are on the right road to Mandamoni.

Several stretches of narrow dirt road running between small ponds can keep visitors from wondering whether it is worth the trouble of taking a chance to visit Mandarmoni. There are no road signs to guide new comers.

Most hotels are situated on the off side of the road away from the beach. The low and high tide of the sea is very interesting. Because the sea very shallow here one can walk quite a distance into the sea during low tide but as the tide rises the sea returns covering up one's footsteps.

The sea breeze is not a breeze at all. It can assume gale forces. I spent several hours on the beach on a swimming pool reclining chair and enjoyed the wind blowing through my body. Swimming in this sea can be great fun although I did not take to the waters.

“beach alone”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2012

very good and clean beach. far away from the crowd at digha. you can drive on the beach but it is better not to because of chances of getting stuck in the sand. Local folk can help you get the car out for a huge fee(4K - 6K). Not much to do after dark.

“Needs urgent attention by authorities for development and Bankability”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2012

West Bengal's very own Brighton,UK, but certainly not nearly as developed or as entertaining !!

It has all the potential, but sadly severely lacking in local area development by Authorities. The entire area is minus electricity at this age,and runs on 24 hours private generator service. That is perhaps one of the reason of its very stiff price tag,as compared to Digha,Shankarpur, etc.Nothing(read food items) is apparently available here and everything is procured from bigger markets around Digha, and that is the second reason for its pricey image.

The beach itself is muddy and shallow and the waves are miniscule, although I was there in Winter. The Sea water level recedes to a great extent in low tide and leaves a trail of mud and slime on the beach. Driving motorcars on the beach and in the shallow water have become a fad these days for all and sundry without caring for the ecology there. During high tide, the Sea water covers almost the entire beach with access to most hotels becoming a near impossibility.

Entertainment on the beach is thus limited to taking a dip in the shallow, muddy water or driving 4 or 2 wheelers on the beach itself. Few bigger hotels have a couple of water scooters and that is about it.Don't even think of para sailing, surfboarding, snorkeling etc.

Plenty of eateries on the beach, but almost all of them are shanties,or you must venture into hotels located right at the beach front for your dining requirements. Sea food is a rage here and you do get large crabs or lobsters if you are lucky.

Too much noise may bother some, coming from the locally run 3 wheelers ferrying local people and belching out black smoke, and nonstop generator run by all hotels 24/7.

I stayed at the quite good Dreamland Hotel for 2 nights. The hotel staff was quite courteous and food was simply excellent, but again we had the hotel owner staying with us at the same time. Overall our experiences at Dreamland Hotel was really memorable. These guys have a hotel with the same name at Puri too.

The access road to the Mandarmoni beach however was a nightmare with narrow, steep incline, too many buses and local vehicle parked here and there, with too little help from the Administration. The road from Dadan Patra Bar is also very narrow and densely populated,so drive carefully.

Overall, for a day or two Mandarmoni is quite good, but its Bankability has not been utilized by Authorities at all.

“Mandarmani”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2012

We started from Howrah Station. Boarded NJP-Digha Paharia Express as this was a Saturday train. The train was late by 2 hours (Better plan to travel by Friday through Tamralipta Express) or any car from Kolkata (roughly 4 hours journey).
We reached there at 2.00 pm (ETA of Paharia Express to Kathi (Contai) railway station is 10.40 am). We planned before hand to reach Digante Resort and had our booking confirmed through Mr. Swarup Adhikary (Mobile can be searched through Net). The person was very generous and had our hotel rooms booked, even asked us of our satisfaction when we reached there. The NEFT could not work for this account, even though Mr. Adhikary arranged everything, and thats too on a phone call.
The manager, all staff of this resort were extremely co-operative and I truly feel that I am in home, visiting their resort. We stayed at a cottage, rent of which is within 1500/-. The food were good, and homely cuisine served hot and fresh. They take on orders and we assemble at their rooms kept as a restaurant (as the main restaurant is under renovation now). The resort is situated close to the Beach and they have a wonderful ambience, with a lake, garden, pine trees and a dozen of swans plying in the garden. The room service was beautiful and they take care of each and every person till satisfied.
I love this approach and will recommend to all my friends to stay at this place in the close vicinity to nature, without choosing for any other option.
