This is supposed to be a one star hotel but it was better than most of the 3 star hotels we stayed at. Guido and his brother and his mother make this a special experience. We cousldn't beleive to delicay of the cakes and fruit salad for breakfast! Nothing was too much trouble (directions, place to hang washing). Fresh flowers in every room. Very clean. You will need transport because it's out of the way, but there's a local trattoria that offers good fare for half what you'd pay in any city, so we often went there for a late dinner after visiting San Gimignano, Sienna and the Tuscan surrounds. Would make this my number one choice if staying in Tuscany. Thanks Guido!

We spent part of our honeymoon at this lovely bed and breakfast and could not have enjoyed our stay more! Guido was so warm, welcoming and full of great recommendations for touring Tuscany. He made delicious breakfasts each morning and even accomodated my food allergy. The location was well situated for day trips by car to Chianti and Siena. San Gimignano is just 5 minutes away and has wonderful restaurants and great little shops in addition to the sights. We highly recommend staying at the Vecchio Asilo...Guido's hospitality alone is worth the stay!

Ten Stars! We spent 6 days in paradise at Hotel Vecchio Asilo. The room was comfortable, warm, spacious & had a great view - and even had good shower pressure ;-). Lovely little touches throughout the property - like fresh flowers, cedar candles and the towel racks right over the radiator so the towels are toasty when you come out of the shower. Guido (plus his Mom & brother) are perfect hosts and made us feel like welcome members of their extended family. Guido gave us great advice on where to eat, which towns to visit, where to park in San Gimignano - plus tips on colloquial Italian. He even invited us to use his laptop whenever I needed to get online. Breakfasts were delicious - beautifully presented thin sliced fruit, freshly baked cakes (the pear was outstanding), penne pomodora, juice, cereal - although I must say that Guido's cafe latte isn't quite as special as everything else about this place (picky, picky). Overall, the whole atmosphere of Vecchio Asilo is so positive, we even had a blast just sitting around, reading and enjoying the atmosphere the one day it rained. Be advised that you will want to make plans for dinners out (there are plenty of very reasonable excellent places to eat a short drive from the B&B) - or you can buy some prosciutto, cheese, & bread at a local alimentaria and have a picnic in your room or the dining room. They keep a good selection of beverages:beer (imported & domestic); wine (San Gimignano Vernaccia DMOG); sodas & aqua minerale (con gas :-)).
Why all this fuss about an unassuming B&B? You owe it to yourself to spend some time here and find out for yourself.

I tried to book for September 2009 about 6 months ago and couldn't get a room so I changed my travel plans so that we could spend 2 days at this wonderful hotel on 21 and 22 October.

My hysband and I arrived after spending some time in Firenze to be greeted by Guido - what a charming and helpful host!

Guido showed us where to park and even guided us! He then insisted on taking our bags to our room himself/ Our room was just fantastic - VERY large comfortable room and bathroom, fresh flowers in the bedroom and bathroom. Central heating was on to warm to room for our arrival. Guido expained that we could turn off the heating when we wanted but it would turn off automatically at midnight and turn on again at 5am so that the room and bathroom would be warm for when we got up or showered.

We ate at Vico Furbo, one of the restaurants recommeded by Guido and it was great but the breakfast provided by Guido the next morning was amazing. Freshly sliced fruit platter, homemade yoghut cake, savoury snacks, fruit juice, tea/coffee (with luxury chocolates), yoghurt and cereals with toasted breand and jams/nutella also available. I am a big eater and couldn't manage to eat it all - he even lights a candle on the table for you!

This is now a hotel - large or small- should be run and I can't reccommend Hotel Vecchio Asilo highly engough (maybe I shouldn't so that I can be sure to get a room next time) and will be booking again for our next trip.

Congratulations Guido,, mother and brother - you all deserve the awards given not only by Trip Advisor but the commune of Ulignano also.

This hotel lives up to its perfect billing. Go there and meet the awesomest hotel owner ever. Get his restaurant recommendations, drink the blood orange juice for breakfast, and explore fantastic San Gimignano. San Gimignano gives a very cool medieval feeling, as does the 850 year old building housing the Vecchio Asilo.
