We stayed here whilst my wife competed in shooting World Championship nearby. The town/village of Montfortinho is just over the Spanish border, and an easy drive.
For us, the Fonte Santa was perfect in every way.
The hotel is situated in a tiny village up in the hills, and is about a two hour drive from Madrid airport where we landed. There are a few shops, a bank and a local bar, but not much else to distract you, there is hardly any through traffic as the village is off the beaten track, but that was absolutely perfect for us. There is a small restaurant in the village but we didn't use it. The bar is what it is, a very welcoming one roomed affair selling ridiculously cheap drinks, and though we tried hard with our tourist Portuguese, the locals really made us welcome. It
In July expect 28 degree plus days, and lovely warm evenings.
The hotel itself is a secluded gem. The rooms are spacious and modern, very large, most of them with Balconies or terraces overlooking the gardens.
A spacious, very classy dining area, and a large well stocked bar. The prices are not prohibitive, far less than you would expect in a hotel of this calibre. The breakfast buffet is excellent with everything to hand and the lunch and evening meal menu are predominantly fish and meat, as is normal in Portugal, lots of options for vegetarians.
The (very respectful, very professional) staff all spoke perfect English, and were most helpful pointing out places to go.
The hotel grounds are spacious and well laid out, and we particularly liked the waterfall built into the pool area (the water falls over the edge of the very large pool, into a pond in the gardens below.
All in all one of the most relaxing stays we have had in any hotel, anywhere. No ambient noise, no traffic to speak of, and sitting out on the terrace in the evening with a glass of cold wine as the sun went down was utterly relaxing. The whole ambience of the hotel and gardens is one of exclusivity.
Nothing much at all for children to do in the local area, but if you want a truly relaxing Portuguese break far from the madding crowd, this is the place.
