We only had a short break, but the cottage was lovely and it so peaceful there. There were a few visits from the Chickens and the cat also made an appearance. We were given Eggs and Milk on arrival which made us feel at home. Beautiful Gardens, pity we had rain but we still went on walks in the surrounding area. We will definitely go back and recommend it to anyone thinking of a peaceful retreat.
The setting of this cottage is ideal. While it seems far from everything, in reality it is only minutes from Dartmoor, the Lydford gorge, Brent Tor, and Tavistock. Only a bit further afield are Exmoor, Bodmin moor, Devon and Cornwall coastal walks and innumerable gardens. The cottage is meticulously kept and quite comfortable and provides something that is important to us and often lacking in other accommodations--excellent lighting for evening reading. Hosts Mary and Justin (and their two cats) were friendly and helpful, yet discreet. Their chickens were friendly as well and almost as discreet.
I stayed at Great Burrow Cottage during the half-term break with my 2 daughters (10 and 13). We had a fantastic holiday here! We were looking for somewhere to get away from it all, to be surrounded by nature, peace and quiet but well-located for walks/cycling/beaches. Great Burrow Cottage was perfect for all of that! The cottage is very cosy and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen and a fabulous bathroom. It is at the end of a country lane in a very tranquil and beautiful location. The garden is stunning and I loved the spectacular views towards dartmoor whilst the kids loved playing table tennis in the barn, watching the hens roam and lay eggs and playing with the cats, Missy and Beastie. The location is great: it is close to Okehampton for supermarket shopping, Dartmoor for walks, Bude for beach action, the Granite Way for cycling and Lydford Gorge for an impressive gorge walk. There are many other activities nearby - we couldn't fit them all in during this week but it is a great excuse to have to go back! We loved this cottage and we would all love to return one day for another fantastic holiday.
This gorgeous cottage is tucked away in the scenic and tranquil Devonshire countryside. I went with my husband and two kids (11 & 13) and our dog. The aim of our holiday was simply to relax and do very little other than some nice walks with the dog. The cottage was comfortable, well equipped, and I loved the way the sun shone through the windows which looked out onto a lovely garden. We visited the stunning Lydford Gorge, Meldon Reservoir, Bratton Tor, Tavistock, Bude (north coast beach) and the Eden Project which was about an hour's drive away. It sounds like we did quite a lot, but our mornings and evenings were pretty lazy. We were lucky with the weather and managed to hang out in the garden, swinging in the hammock, roasting marshmellows over the firepit, and playing darts and table tennis in the barn. Our kids loved it. We totally recharged our batteries and had a welcome break from work, social media (though wifi was available) and the daily routine. Would absolutely recommend.
We were looking for a comfortable well-equipped self-catering cottage in Devon. Great Burrow fulfilled this requirement and provided us with a perfect base to explore the surrounding countryside. Our friendly hosts, Justin and Mary, communicated well during the booking process, have a simple and informative website and made us feel at home during our stay, without intruding on our privacy. This personal touch included the fresh eggs on arrival and extended to advice on which walk to tackle on Dartmoor.
The cottage itself is spacious for five with all the comforts of home, from a comfortable beds to the well-equipped kitchen. We had mixed weather during our week, so it was great to be able to relax in the sitting room and enjoy playing table tennis on the rainy days. The cottage is located in the heart of the Devonshire countryside meaning easy access to Dartmoor NP and the surrounding area. We also enjoyed day trips to the coast around Bude and the Eden Project in North Cornwall.
We travel lots and stay in accommodation ranging from youth hostels to five star hotels. What we're always looking for, regardless of the type of accommodation, is charm. It's difficult to define how to achieve "charm", but Justin and Mary have managed to do this with their excellent cottage at Great Burrow. We'll recommend the cottage to our friends and family and to Trip Advisor readers.
