We recently stayed here for 2 nights and had a lovely time. The owner, Gisela, spoke very good English and was quite friendly. She gave us a quick tour when we arrived and then left us to our own devices to explore her gorgeous hotel. It has been in her family's hands for many years and it was lovely as the photos show.

Our room faced Spitz's cathedral and vineyards. In the evenings, we took a bottle of wine down to the terrace off the breakfast room (see photo) and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery. There was also an honor bar with wine, pretzels, etc...

The staff were very helpful and gave us information about bike rentals, local restaurants, etc... They definitely are "early birds" - the cleaning ladies entered our room at 7:45 am the first morning to start cleaning.

The wifi was free and spectacularly fast. There was also free parking within the hotel's grounds.

It will probably be of interest only to Americans but I want to mention that there is no A/C and Austria does get hot in the summer. Our room had windows and when opened, created a nice cross breeze however that also means you hear the cathedral bells tolling hourly and you get very bright morning light. This is not a negative but rather something to be aware of.

Dear guests,

Thank you very much for your nice comments, we are very delighted that you enjoyed the ambiance of our house, the scenery and the service.

We also appreciate you pointing out the usefulness of an A/C in the cathedral / vineyard facing room during hot nights. We have talked to our architect and he pointed out the possibility of a mobile cooling solution. We have already identified a device, which we can already provide in the coming weeks.

We are looking forward to welcoming you again in the future!

Thank you again, all the best,

Your team Barock-Landhof Burkhardt

We spent 2 nights at this exceptional hotel whilst walking the Wachau trail, and couldn't have stayed at a more perfect venue. A beautiful Baroque house standing in extensive gardens, it has been restored to a magnificent standard. Totally delightful staff who couldn't have been more helpful, superb rooms and lovely outside terrace. The only downside is that it isn't open in the Winter months!

Barock-Landhof-Burkhardt was first recommended to us several years ago by our German friends and it has never disappointed us. Last year we stayed after the renovations and found it more wonderful than ever. We stayed in a superior room and were amazed to find such a lovely room in a small hotel. The owners and team are all very friendly and provide great service. The breakfast buffet includes cooked to order eggs and is all you could want with local fare. This Danube area of Austria is beautiful and offers many sightseeing possibilities, which the owners and staff are happy to share with you.

Room Tip: The superior rooms are highly recommended.

What a gem of a place the Barock-Landhof Burkhardt hotel is!! We were lucky enough to spend 3 wonderful nights at this family owned, beautifully refurbished, historic hotel whilst enjoying some of the amazing sights the area has to offer.

The hotel is situated in the lovely town of Spitz on the banks of the mighty Danube (Donau) River which is right in the middle of the wine, apricot, apple and pear growing region know as the Wachau Valley. The owners and staff at this wonderful hotel are extremely warm and welcoming from the moment you arrive until the minute you depart. The hotel also has it's own orchards of apples, pears and apricots, as well as walnut and almond trees. This delicious produce is on offer around the hotel for you to help yourself to which is fantastic. I can't remember the last time I ate such delicious apples, pears and nuts!!

During our stay we enjoyed a day cycling through the surrounding vinyards and orchards, stopping along the way to take in the sights and to eat some locally grown fruit. We also stopped for a glass of wine or two at country restaurants offering wine made from their own vinyards, what a memorable day!! We visited the wonderful Abbey at Melk, the town of Krem as well as the old town of Durnstein with the famous blue church.....there's an amazing bakery there with very delicious things....:) This same amazing bread is served to you for breakfast in the lovely dining room at the hotel along with fresh fruit, delicious cold meats and cheeses, eggs, excellent coffee....the list goes on.

The hotel is newly refurbished so the rooms are superb. We in fact had an apartment with it's own lounge, dining area, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom with separate toilet....an amazing amount of space. The apartment was cleaned every morning whilst we were at breakfast, now that's what I call 'being on holiday'!! The hotel also offers beautiful rooms and suits of which there are only 11 so the hotel really has a very personal feeling about it.

We found traveling from the UK to this region of Austria really easy. We flew from Heathrow to Vienna, and then it was just over a 1 hour drive to Spitz.

So, If you are lucky enough to find yourself in the Wachau Valley, there is only one place to stay and that's the Barock-Landhof Burkhardt....it's simply wonderful!!

Having travelled all over the world, I would never have guessed that Spitz, Austria had such an extraordinary property in which to provide a base to explore the area!!! This area includes the Wachau wine region, towns along the Danube river such as Krems and the famous Melk Abbey. This family run property has been passed down through the generations and has recently been lovingly restored with a keen eye to architectural detail mixing beautifully picked antiques with modern fixtures and stylish conveniences. The service attention to detail started the moment of arrival and lasted until the very end. Hands down the best hotel/bed & breakfast in which to tour the Wachau wine region and do tastings (even though unfortunately had two days of "off and on" rain were not able to bike it but used the bus and had a gorgeous last day). Arrived by bus from the Krems train station just when it started to pour with rain and were lucky enough to meet a women on the bus who knew which stop for the B&B and then called ahead to the owner Gisela who immediately fetched us by car for what would have been merely a 5 minute walk. However when you arrive in those conditions, it makes all the difference! We pulled up to a gated vineyard on the back of the property filled with numerous fruit trees and their own vineyard. Speaking later with the Hirtzberger winery, was amazed to find that Hirtzberger uses some of Barock-Landhof Burkhardt's grapes in their wines. The bedroom was gorgeous (and comfortable)! The high ceilings, the crown molding, the beautiful bathroom with gleaming fixtures and heated floors (this particular room actually had a separate toilet area). Even the stemware in the room was top notch. The breakfast room was beautifully set and breakfast was plentiful and well appointed. In addition to the variety of hot teas, coffee, juices, sliced meats, cheeses, cereals, yogurts, sweet and savory breads, pates, deviled eggs, jams and jellies (including the homemade famous apricot and berry preserves of the area), you could have made to order eggs by Kranister, the lovely manager. She manages the property and is quite efficient at handling all the guests while also directing the discrete cleaning of the rooms while you enjoy breakfast. As you go back to your room, everything is tidy, refreshed and spotless. Michael, Gisela's husband stops by at breakfast to inquire if you need any assistance with things to do or see, and while you continue to enjoy breakfast, Michael goes back to his computer and checks schedules on whatever mode of transportation you need and most times hands you his hand drawn map to ensure there is no possibility of your getting lost! Michael, having studied at Georgetown University, is enjoyable to talk to about the transition to quite a more tranquil living situation in Spitz. lol. He has great recommendations for restaurants, different towns and what to see. Wachau is one of Austria's most established and notable wine regions, specializing in dry wines made from Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Michael explained, directed us to the local Heuriger's throughout the stay. With the best of luck, even got to join Gisela, Michael and Kranister at a local Heuriger on the last evening. Gisela has a directory of which Heuriger's are open each week, don't miss this experience! Heuriger's are local wine taverns only open for a limited time in a rotation usually of 2 or 3 weeks, serving only their own year's most recent wines. They also serve a limited selection of cold foods, usually homemade as an evening meal. This last one we went to had hands down the best desserts of the trip! Even better that the Konditorei pastry shops from Zurich and Vienna! Barock-Landhof is a true gem and a must stay!! Visiting the other towns, got to see some of the other hotels that had been considered and all I can say is don't stay anywhere else to enjoy the region! Love this place and highly recommend-A+++

Thank you very much for your kind words, we are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at our house!

Having lived and worked on 3 continents it´s a great pleasure for us to welcome guests from all over the world and help them with tips and hints to make the best of the holiday in Spitz and the Wachau valley.

Since our historic hotel is only one hour from Vienna international airport, the Danube vine valley is ideal for a few days side trip to enjoy the cultural and culinary highlights of Lower Austria.

Hope to see you again ...next time with a lot more sunshine :-)

All the best! Gisela & Michael
