Review of Le Chateau, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
On Sainte-Catherine Est (East) is a detached 'two story + basement' house in East Montreal on the corner of Viau and Ste. Catherine's. It is quick to get to by car or by taking the Montreal Metro to the 'Viau' Metro station located at the 'Big O' (Olympic Stadium) followed by a short walk South on Viau. If arriving by car, there is one parking spot that comes with the house. Additional vehicles must use street parking, which can be at a premium, but we had three vehicles during our stay and no one had any trouble finding a parking spot.
The house is a rare gem, beautifully refinished/upgraded, richly and tastefully decorated and furnished as well as comfortable and roomy- a veritable grand chateau!
There are 3 huge bedrooms upstairs served by a large tiled bathroom with jet tub and shower plus option for low lighting. The upstairs rooms are also served by a deck furnished with table and chairs and a lounging-sun tanning chair. Pots of hanging flowers covered all the walls.
Another bedroom is located on the main floor and there are two more beds in the basement where there is also a second large bathroom.
All the beds had excellent mattresses which afforded a restful sleep. There were plenty of pillows, extra blankets if needed, and quality plush towels
The basement is more of a complete suite than a bedroom per se. There is a small comfortable bedroom with its own door, however, the large main bed is simply part of the very large room which includes a two person jet tub, sauna, lounging chairs, large dining table, and some exercise equipment. Special lighting and lovely flag stone finished walls give the room an impressive medieval aura.
A laundry with top of the line machines is also located in the basement but away from the suite.
The main floor comprises the aforementioned bedroom plus three other rooms and a spacious covered deck accessed via the back door off the kitchen.
A large room just off the front entrance is divided into a sitting-receiving area with recliners, sofa, easy chairs, cushions and good lighting, plus formal dining area with china cabinet and a massive 'old world master craftsman' dining table and 'duchess' chairs to easily seat twelve people. Another large room with a round table and seating for six functions as a daily use dining and gathering area.
The remaining room is the kitchen. There is plenty of working counter space including an island with sink and 'bar chairs' for three for informal counter dining. The kitchen is well equipped with a full range of appliances, including coffee maker and toaster, fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher, plus plenty of fine dinnerware, wine glasses, cutlery and even spices. Top of the line counter to ceiling and floor to ceiling cabinetry provide a massive amount of storage space and everything you would need in a kitchen.
The back deck is mostly covered by a large awning. There is a large deck table and plenty of chairs to sit a crowd. As with the upstairs deck, the back deck is festooned with pots of flowers. A gas grill is provided. Access to the spacious yard is via the deck.
Twelve of us were resident in the house for a week during which time we also received several visitors including the newlyweds whose ceremony was the occasion for our presence in Montreal. We were all impressed with the house which is pretty much one of a kind. Serving everyone including our visitors was easy. We were comfortable, children had space to play, we all had as much privacy as we wanted and services like grocery stores and a beautiful municipal park and water playground for children were all nearby.
While this house might at first seem expensive to rent, if one considers what it would cost for accommodation elsewhere for a group as large as ours, the cost is reasonable indeed, and thats before considering the home's extraordinary quality and convenience. I must add that our host, Nina, was also a most pleasant person. We were all unanimously agreed that this house, on Rue Sainte-Catherine Est, merits our highest regard and recommendation for value, comfort, convenience and the sheer delight of spending a week in such a place. - Rick Tone, Francine Thivierge Whitehorse, Yukon.
