“Excellent in everyway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2011

I use to go to this restaurant more than 30 years ago. Trendier places became more attractive and I had not been there for years. There is much to be said to tradition. We went a few days ago for a family birthday. I checked on Tripadvisor, if it still existed and well, there was a good review from a regular customer. It hit a nostalgic cord, so I made a reservation for Sunday night. The place was busy, good sign. The traditional decor is the same, but refreshed, very comfortable, intimate and the staff extremely friendly. My husband had fresh oysters and ordered a second helping, they were so good. Although, all the traditional Italian food is on the menu, I had a whole red snapper grilled to perfection, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. We all shared and tasted each others plate, the Osso Bucco was superb and so was the Veal Scalopinni. The bill was the best part, very reasonable, considering my husband had two plates of oysters for starters and a good bottle of wine. This is our renewed Laval restaurant.

“ARRRR Matey......Don't Ride With This Pirate!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2009

Went to Le Pirate with a party of 7 in mid July, the place has been open for close to 30 years, and is showing it's age. First off the neighborhood....it has seen better days. The location is central to Laval, and easy to get to. Decor of the place was solid 80's, it has a nautical theme, lot's of wood, model boats abound, and the place seems well kept, it would need a slight update lookwise, but on the other hand, something nice and new might not fit in with the rest of the neighborhood! The food was very uninspired, it's sort of a cross between italian and a seafood place...so it had possibilties, but in the end came up way short. Appetizers were the highlight, quite good deep fried calamari, some nice roasted veggies, and a delicious fried zucchini dish, bread refills were generous and often. Main courses consisted of a canneloni dish, which was a 7 out of 10, a linguini a la vongole with tomato sauce which was a 7 out of 10, a shrimp dish rated a 6, someone oredered a rib steak, with no pink it, so medium well I guess, it had to be sent back, and was still under cook the 2nd time, one order of scampi which was very good, and I had what was probably the worse linguini al la vongole with white wine sauce I have ever had, it was completely without any taste, it was like eating a plain rice cake, I did not even eat 1/2 of it, and ended up eating the canneloni dish my son barely touched (not that it wasn't good but he pigged out on bread), 2 desserts (yes he found room for the dessert!) both were a crepe with banana and ice cream, and were well received. Service was quite good. The place is not cheap either, with some seafood dishes hit the $40.00 range, so with all that said......the amount of good food in and around Montreal (Laval included) I doubt I`d give it a 2nd chance.
