“Good Hotel with Unrivalled Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2012

I stayed in this hotel on two occassions in the past 2 years.

This is a very good hotel right in the center of downtown Toronto. The Via Rail station is a 5 minute walk away from the hotel, Bay and King (i.e. financial district) is a 10 minute walk, and the Eaton Center is approx. a 20 minute walk. Can't do much better than that in Toronto.

The rooms are extremely clean, albeit a bit on the small side. But I cannot complain about smallness with such amazingly low prices. Aside from smallness, many of the rooms also don't come with a "view".

I recommend this hotel without hesitation for people wishing to stay in downtown Toronto on a budget.

Dear Guest of the Hotel,

Thank you for your feedback of the hotel and highlighting the hotels central location in the heart of downtown Toronto. The rooms on the top five floors of the hotel are slightly larger and all come with a writing desk. We hope you will try these out next time. Kind Regards

If you are traveling with any kind of cargo don't expect any help from staff. Don't stay here the staff is unfriendly and unwilling to help their own guests with bags. Very unprofessional hotel. The manager I spoke to was rude and lacked manners. I could not and would not ever stay here again. The room smelt chemically and the noise from next door neighbors was loud. I was placed on the third floor which I didn't mind, but it was busy all night with kids roaming the halls because there is only one vending machine room in the whole hotel. Unpleasant people at reception....a total mess of a hotel.

Dear Guest of the Hotel,

I am really sorry to hear about your recent experience at the hotel. Being a limited service hotel we do not have the infrastructure to provide Bellman services. However your expectation to have received empathy and assistance from the Manager On Duty is fully understandable and i assure you that we will take necessary corrective measures. Kind Regards.

The hotel itself was very classy but it is very much suited to those who arrive without a car. The parking is a block away and accessible via stairs (no elevator) off of the sidewalk to underground parking. This is a HUGE hassle if you have luggage. The room was small but efficient. There was no place to sit other than the bed. It was a easy walk to restaurants and most of the main Toronto attractions - CN tower, harborfront, Rogers Stadium. There was free Wi-Fi but it went in and out even in the room. Onsite breakfast was pricey at $14 but Tim Horton's was right across the road.

Room Tip: Second floor has no ice machine. Higher floors give a better view.

Dear Guest of the Hotel,

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you had to lug the luggage up the staircase....definately difficult! Often guests who arrive by car, pull up in front of the hotel, leave their baggage at the front desk and then park the car. We will make sure we mention this on our website so that everyone is aware of it. We have also recently added a Ottomon in the room for seating.Kind Regds

Pros: Good location, early and easy check-in, convenience store opposite, Tim Horton's nearby.
Cons: Dark, noisy (from the street) room, small and outdated tv, old and really scratched bathtub, only one working elevator.
Probably next time I will try a different hotel.

Dear Guest of the Hotel,

Lot changed since your stay. Both the elevators are completely renovated with newer and reliable technology and with new interiors. In some rooms the TV's were old and have been replaced with flat screen TV's as in the rest of the hotel. The damaged bathtubs have also been completely refurbished in the last 120 days. We hope to see you again! Kind Regards.

I stayed at this hotel recently for one night. The room was small but for one night it was okay. The pros of this hotel were:

-check in was pretty easy and quick though on a Friday night they might do with a third person on the desk to handle walk ins because it seems that both staff were often on the phone with others.
-the location was not bad. It's close to Union Station, the CN Tower and other major tourist attractions.
-the bed was very comfortable
-the closet was HUGE!
- I very much enjoyed the styling of the bathroom

The cons were:
- our room looked into the other side of the hotel. I could see into the room that was a few floors below. I hope that people above me were not doing the same.
- there is only one ice machine and it's on the 3rd floor. I would have liked one a little closer.
- some of the channels on the tv were very fuzzy. It seemed that the more local the channel the fuzzier it was.
- we had to play with the position of the remote before it would work on the TV.
- there isn't breakfast included. I ahve stayed in simillarly sized, priced and rated hotels in Europe and had breakfast included
- my confirmation said i was to get a welcome bag at check in, I never did get it.
- the bath products come from containers on the wall. I really didnt like that. The soup was hard to use because it required both hands to use.
- the AC unit was right below a table. The way that it points up, it made the table nice and cool, but took quite a while to make the room cool. The AC unit is loud but no louder then any other unit.

I don't think this place is super, but I don't think it's horrible. I have stayed in far better, and I have stayed in far worse. I also don't know if I wold stay here again.

Dear Senior Reviewer

Thank you very much for sharing your "pros" and "cons" experience of the Strathcona Hotel. As a part of our eco freindly initiatives, to minimise use of plastics, we introduced the shampoo and body wash dispensers after thourough research and guest engagement. However, we have subsequently found that not everyone is comfortable with this. We now stock traditional shampoo and soap bars in the hotel to meet with specific requests. Going forward, we will indicate this provision in the "In Room" Guest Services Directory and the Hotel Website. During the recent Soccer World Cup Semi-finals and Finals, Rogers our Cable Service Provider had some major outages in the downtown core. This was since resolved and the service is back to normal. I am sorry that we did not honor our commitment of a "Welcome Bag" on arrival. I have taken it up with our Front Desk Manager and we will ensure that the bags are always available.Kind Regards.
