“ARC, The Hotel OTTAWA - Almost Perfect”
Reviewed 25 July 2012

I own and operate a private investigation agency and paralegal firm in LONDON, Ontario. And, when it comes to chosing a hotel/resort for business/vacation.., admittedly.., I am rather anal about making sure the hotel/resort is everything it is advertised to be.... I read a few negative comments on Trip Advisor about "ARC, The Hotel"..., but my business associates and I had a very important meeting with officials at Health Canada (on JULY 24, 2012), which was directly across the street from "ARC, The Hotel"...,so.., it made it very convenient for us, just to walk across the street for this meeting. Having read some of these negative comments, I was a little skeptical about this hotel. Upon our arrival, I was immediately impressed. My room (king-size) on the second floor was immaculate, although a mini fridge would have been nice. The bed was beyond comfortable. Large spotlessly clean, bright bathroom. Parking was not an issue, as we were able to pull up in front of the hotel, unload our luggage and a very accomodating gentleman (valet parking) drove our vehicle to a safe area adjacent to the hotel. The room was beautifully decorated, with soft earth tone colours and richly stained trim work. Very relaxing. Good water pressure for a nice invigorating shower..., which is, I believe, very important for most men. Meals were exceptional! The Chef really knows how to prepare mouth-wateringly great tasting food. Staff were very polite. Many thanks to Shannon SULLIVAN and Howard KRAVITZ, for making our business trip a very pleasant experience. Without question, I would highly reccomend this hotel. Garry F. WHITE.

Room Tip: I'm sure there are many rooms that are excellent.. I stayed in room 212 (King size) and it was p...

Just returned from a 3 night visit to Ottawa -chose the ARC from the Hotel Packages offered by the VanGogh exhibit at the National Gallery - The ARC package included breakfast, parking, and admission to the gallery and the special exhibit - we highly recommend this well located, boutique hotel.

Great first impression as we were offered a much appreciated glass of sparkling wine upon our arrival. This followed a long drive from the VT border, where we encounterd congested highways, accidents, detours in the Montreal area -

The rest of our stay included nicely appointed room, full breakfast, attentive staff, several recommendations for restaurants and sight seeing -

A double decker hop on/off D'Arcy McGee's,city tour - Lady Dive (Grey Line) included Parliament HIll, Rieau Centre, Byward Market, Embassies, Prime Minister's Residence and many more interesting stops.

Changing of the guard in front of the Parliament Building each morning at 10:00 a.m.

Restaurants we enjoyed close to hotel - Mamma Teresa's Ristorante, homestyle Italian -, cor Somerset/O'Connor, D'Arcy McGee's, Irish Pub - Corner of Elgin,
Black Thorn - Byward Market - there are pubs on every corner in Byward Market - it was fun sampling the wonderful Canadian craft beers -

Ottawa is a dignified, elegant capital - offering beautiful parks, historic buldings and culture, with friendly residents -would love to return someday.

My daughter and I travelled to Ottawa for a tour of Carleton University and spent the night prior at ARC
The hotel was easy to find and the valet parking made life easy.
The reception was friendly and informative and came with a glass of sparkling wine. We felt like VIP's.
The front desk gave is a few directions and off we went. The parliment buildings the canal, museums, shopping, restaurants and the market are all within an short walk. The Ottawa information centre is just down the street as well. The highlight of the evening was the free light show on the parliment buildings telling the history of Canada. It made you so proud. On our way home we stopped at an outdoor cafe on Sparks St. and a salsa street dance was just getting going. Such spice. When we arrrived back at the hotel we had received a complimentary turn down with chocolates!
The hotel room itself was beautiful with soothing grey as the main colour. Coffee machine, flat screen-all the amenities as expected and a nice robe to use. The bed was to die for and the room was quiet. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thank you to all the staff at ARC.

Tough to know how to review hotels in Ottawa. From a relative perspective -- comparing other hotels in Ottawa? Or from an absolute perspective -- comparing five-star hotels around the world? Realistically, there is no comparison anywhere in Ottawa to the finest hotels around the world. They simply don't exist. There hasn't been a hotel built in this city for more than a decade (if not longer). The most that has happened is that these boutique hotels have emerged, but even then, the Arc has been around for a decade now. So here is my review from a visit last week, about a decade after I first visited the hotel.

The hotel is easily accessible, being only three blocks away from Parliament, and two away from Elgin. That makes it very accessible to the canal, Eaton Centre, and not much of a walk to get down to the market. Parking is a cinch, you just pull in off of Slater, and it's valet parking. Need the car, call down and it'll be brought up five minutes later. The parking situation is obviously on par with what you'd expect from any good hotel anywhere.

The rooms are well appointed, although it really hasn't changed in ten years. A decade ago, a solitary green apple was all the rage in Ottawa circles for whatever reason, and true to form, you'll still find that in your room at the Arc today. Bed is comfy, furniture continues to be good and comfortable. I stayed in the junior suite, which is big enough although not at all comparable to suites you would find at better hotels in major US cities, for example. Price is reasonable.

The elevator is slow although not maddeningly slow. There's really only one person who can check you in so sometimes there can be a wait. The minibar is stocked with nothing other than creams for your coffee (Timothys coffee, but their machines are K-Cups so bring whatever is your fancy).

The negatives are not huge. The breakfasts served are pretty / very ordinary -- two choices, neither of them being particularly exciting: the standard continental (fruit cup, skimpy amount of pastries/bread/muffin/croissant of your choice, juice, coffee) or the eggs & bacon etc. I tried both, and they were fine, but really you can't say much more than that. Fine. Meh.

The bathroom is ok, although a little cramped. Shower curtains for the tub, which you really don't find at the higher end hotels anymore.

The walls are either thin, or the people next to me having crazy screaming sex were really loud. Could be a little of Door #1, and a little of Door #2.

Service was friendly and attentive throughout the trip, which is good.

Compared to other hotels in Ottawa, this beats hands down most of the chains - Westin, Deltas, etc. I like the rooms at the Arc more than Chateau Laurier, but obviously the Laurier has so much history and grandeur that it's just in a different category. But the rooms at the Laurier really are smaller, older, needing updating, compared to the Arc (does the Laurier even have Wifi yet? For the longest time they didn't -- how crazy is that), that the Arc continues to be my choice.

They don't get the five stars though because I just can't give that out unless it really is a five-star hotel. But compared to anything else in the city, I'd give it five stars.

We had a recent occasion to spend two nights (Friday-Saturday) at Arc where we were greeted with chocolates and champage as we checked in. Beautifully appointed rooms with excellent amenities including CD player. Food in the lounge was great also. There is a small gym on the basement level that was never busy. If you're looking for a great place to stay in Downtown Ottawa, try the Arc.
