As far as museums in Kingston go, this one is small, but you can't beat the price: free. It has lots of samples, both local and from around the world. Their recent addition of the topography display made it an extra long visit for the boy the last time. They also have some map activities for little kids. They host a lot of school tours so you might run into one and in December they host a rock and mineral sale as a fundraiser.

This is an excellent small museum if you like rocks fossils and geology. It is free and there are several student available to answer questions and show you around if needed. The new item that impressed me was the augmented topography sandbox made from an Xbox 360 sensor, projector and computer. It senses the shape of the sand in the sand box, contours and colour fills the display which is then projected onto the surface of the sand. If you change the "hills and valleys" in the sand this then updates with a very slight time lag. Brilliant!
The displays on Ediacara fossils were good and there is a large reproduction of the bedding surface from mistaken point in Newfoundland. Dinosaur exhibition is a bit small but there were some genuine dinosaur eggs from China.

Well, the place is no big, has several species of rocks from diferent parts of the world. I think, could be more interesting for geology students, than a commun people, but as a general culture to may visit it.

All that glitters ... very extensive collection of rock samples. Along with fossilized remains from plant to sea creatures. All housed in a University building. Good history lesson. Very tactile experience. A must see if you are into geology and crystals.

This museum is located on the Queen's University campus in Miller Hall. For such a small museum it covers a wide range of geological and earth science topics, especially paleontology and mineralogy. Apparently it's mostly used by local school groups but is certainly appropriate for families. There are a number on hands-on activities (a number of items children are encouraged to touch!)
It's clear that the museum doesn't get much funding and is kept going by a small dedicated staff (one professor I believe) and students – they do a great job with the resources they have.
Another item for those interested in museum curation – the museum has a wonderful collection of vintage display cabinets. It's like walking into a museum maybe 80 or more years ago: wonderful cabinetry and display cases. I hope those remain part of the collection!
