Hi there and thanks for your review!

Great to hear about your stay with us.

We want to offer our guests affordable accommodation together with extra's such as free breakfast, dinner and more recently an included cocktail. Our downtown location certainly makes it easy to get around and our staff can always help you with directions or tips!

We want to thank you for staying with us, hope you enjoyed Victoria and would like to wish you happy and safe travels! :)

The facilities consist of an old multi-story building that has been chopped into a bunch of rooms and dorms. In that way it is a typical back packers, but it is unlike any back packers I have ever stayed in. It can best be described as a 'scene.' If you are young and fancy yourself as cool/hip and like to socialise, you will love this place. It even has a bar, and the bar and dining areas are loud and constantly packed with people. If on the other hand you are not at all cool, have no tattoos to show off, and not particularly social, you will want to avoid the common areas. It is clean enough, and they provide a free breakfast and dinner of sorts, and a free cocktail a day. I thought it was a bit expensive, but then after looking at the prices of hotels down town it looked more like a bargain. I really have no complaints with the place, but it is just a backpackers, and thus my 3 star rating.

Hi Robert, thanks for your review here on Tripadvisor.

Our 1891 heritage building is certainly a quirky one. The building was initially a hotel in 1891 before being converted to an apartment building in 1942. We renovated the building in 1999, keeping most of the historic details, and converted it back to hotel style accommodation. The original layout of the building is still intact meaning a large variety of room shapes and sizes, like you said.

At Ocean Island, we work hard to maintain a social and casual atmosphere but most importantly we want everyone to feel welcome. Although we have a bar, our back lounge area is more quiet and ideal for people who just like to relax. We just want to state that you certainly don't have to be hip and cool or have tattoos to enjoy our common areas. We welcome people from all walks of life, have staff from all over the world and respect people for who they are. All we want for our guests is to feel comfortable and at home. We do apologize if you felt like this wasn't the case for you.

Since accommodation prices in Victoria are indeed skyrocketing, we take pride in providing affordable accommodation together with free breakfast, dinner and an included cocktail.

To end, we want to thank you for staying with us, hope you enjoyed beautiful Victoria and would like to wish you happy and safe travels! :)

Well I'm here in the high season! Hotel prices are astronomical! AirBnB has to be booked months ahead [and is pricey] This has been economical, well-located [on bus route from Shwartz bay]; a short walk to China town , a slightly longer one to Government House. Breakfast, an evening meal and a cocktail were unexpected perks; I am staying in a 'single' room, with a comfy double-bed, fridge and folding table, hooks and shelf-storage; shared bathroom [three feet away] lots of others available if engaged. New fans put in whilst I've been here...LOVE IT!!

Room Tip: I hear that the dorms are good as well

Hey there!

So great to hear you had such an awesome time at our place!
Hotel prices are certainly astronomical in Victoria right now and we pride ourselves in offering rooms for cheaper prices. Moreover, we are certainly well situated in the heart of downtown Victoria, close to several points of interest as well as major bus routes.

We like to provide our guests with great value hence why we introduced our free breakfast, dinner and an included cocktail. We think it's a great and delicious way for our guests to save some money!

Also great to hear you liked our new fans. We've almost finished installing them in all of our rooms. These new fans can actually suck out the hot air in the room, which makes for a more comfortable stay.

Thanks again for writing us such a stellar review! We hope that you enjoyed Victoria and wish you happy and safe travels.

Till we meet again! :)

I have stayed here many times, this is often my go to place to stay when I am in Victoria. Great location, decent price, great free breakfast and free dinner. Service is great, room is clean, the noise level is dependant on where you are.

On my recent stay I stayed in room S1 which is right next to the door that leads to the main lobby so there was a bit of traffic going in and out, nothing that really bothered us but anyone staying in that room should consider getting ear plugs. I have stayed one previous upper floors and the noise level was much better.

Room Tip: Make sure to get ear plugs if you are staying in room S1, they are free

Hi there and thanks for your review! We are always glad to hear we did well, especially from our repeat guests! We certainly have a lot to like, whether it's our location, free breakfast and dinner or our staff ;).

We indeed have rooms in all shapes and sizes and our mini twins are small but efficient! S1 is indeed closer to the main area and can therefore be noisy until our quiet hours kick in. Still, we have free earplugs available at our 24 hour Front Desk if you need them!

Despite this, we hope that you still enjoyed Victoria and hope to see you again soon!
We wish you happy and safe travels! :)
