Description: Welcome to Jambo Grill. "Jambo” is Swahili, East African word, meaning hello. “Paan” is a betal leaf wraped with sweets & nuts. The dishes at Jambo Grill are Khoja style cooking, which is quite different from other Indian style dishes. Khoja’s, followers of the Ismaili Branch of Shia sect of Islam, our forefathers in India, were converted to Islam by the Dais from Iran. Thus, there is a strong Persian & Gujarati influence evident in our cooking. The Tandoor, a deep clay oven is one of the key elements in cooking these dishes, like Chicken Tikka, Kebabs & Naan bread whick cooks on the walls of the tandoor. Around the 1920s, the Khoja’s settled in large numbers in East Africa before immigrating to Canada in the 1970s. Certain African style dishes such as Cassava & Tilapia Fish are influences from that continent. Also cooking on the Grill (Sigdi) was very common in East Africa. Dishes like Mishkaki & Kuku Choma are prepared in this manner. At Jambo Grill we present you with the tastes of four continents, Iran, India, Africa, & Canada which we now call home. Our ingredients, tastes, & style of cooking are influenced by each of these unique places. Our Symbol Shaped like a betal leaf & the flame of a tandoor oven, on top of our naan bread, with paan leafs falling into a jar of sweet syrup.Voted Vancouver's Best East African and Indian Cuisine & Restaurant in Vancouver.

You would want to go back again to try all the items from their delicious menu. Their boneless ribs, masala steaks, masala fries and chili chicken are among their best items on the menu.

Went on a weeknight and was excellent. Had the masala prawns and it was one of the best I have ever had. Really enjoyed. The rest of our family had chicken and also pili pili corn and mogo. Service was good and chai was also good. I would return for sure.

My girlfriend wanted to try somewhere different and exotic for dinner so we decided to visit the Jambo Grill and Paan House. It's located on East Kingsway just west of Joyce and we found parking to be a bit of a challenge but it's worth finding a spot!
The restaurant is nicely decorated with a variety of wood carvings and a couple of African murals on the walls. The staff are dressed in African apparel (dresses for women and shirts for men) which enhances the experience.
The restaurant offers a good selection of East African/Indian food. We chose a couple of items, the African Chili Chicken and the Lamb Lollipops entrees to share and we both ordered alcoholic beverages. I had an African beer and my girlfriend chose a lime and cucumber cocktail.
Our drinks took a few minutes to get to our table as we were there during a busy period and the staff had their hands full. However, they did arrive and we watched with interest as a variety of mouth watering dishes were served at tables around us. Soon enough our entrees arrived. For most of the entrees you get a choice of 2 sides so we chose the Masala potatoes and the Pili Pili corn with the lamb and naan bread for the chili chicken. The lamb lollilops were absolutely delectable, marinated in yogourt and tandoori spices they were very flavorful and tender. The masala potatoes were a bit spicy but nice and the pili pili corn had a sweet flavor but also some spicy heat too. The African Chili chicken came with a fair amount of sauce, red and green peppers and a reasonable amount of chicken, However, we found the offering to be very spicy and hot, probably a bit more extreme than we would like. The dish was tasty and we noticed that the heat increased the capabilities of our taste buds as we both noticed the flavors of our beverages were enhanced.
The staff are friendly and service is generally good. The only thing holding me back from a higher rating is that a menu that ranked dishes in terms of how spicy they were would have been helpful.
We look forward to returning and trying some of their other offerings!

Good friendly service and very nice Indian food with an East African influence. Reasonably priced too. Thumbs up!

A group of us went. Free refills on chai tea. Had the chicken tikka with pili pili corn and masala potatoes. My son had a chicken dish off African side of the menu. Veggie pakora was good. One friend had the lamb biryiani which was good. We will go back to try different dishes. Friendly attentive service.
