I've been commissioned by the City of Vancouver to write a book-length history of the Orpheum here. This big, beautiful old theatre will be 75 in November, and a lot of
activities are planned.
But even if you miss the November events (not the best time to visit Vancouver, for all the rain we get that month!) try to pop into the Orpheum and get a free tour. They're conducted by a theatre-savvy fellow named Norman Young, and they're a hoot: you'll go deep into the bowels of the building, and way up into the loft . . . and see a lot of other interesting stuff in this nearly-3000-seat edifice. Like the massive chandelier from Czechoslovakia (it was still Czechoslovakia back then) that looms above the audience, a ceiling mural, wonderfully attractive decorative touches . . . it's a treat!
