“Affordable stay, close to transportation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2008

We stayed in the room that had 2 single beds (as requested) for 4 nights in August.. The room was on the 2nd floor and right across from the bathroom. Unfortunately one of the showers was still broken (as previous reviewer mentioned), but I was still able to access the working shower without long line ups.
I would have to say that dollar for dollar ($109/night) it is well worth the money. My only suggestion would be if you don't need two single beds to reserve a double bed room (small room at $109 but had an open window facing east) or if you needed two beds to reserve the room that has a double and single bed for $129 (once again facing east and a larger room). Our room with 2 singles was in the middle of the house and one of the windows did not open (faced the smokers/computer room) and the other window could only be opened slightly as pigeons were on the ledge (and the next door building was very, very close). I found the room very warm as the temperatures were 28 plus when we were in Vancouver. I think though that the middle room would be fine when you didn't want to have the window open in the night.

Will and Kate were very helpful and pleasant. The kitchen was stocked for breakfast and guests could make their own meals throughout the day if they brought their own food.

I liked how the hideaway was close to the skytrain and buses and it was very easy to find.
I would stay here again if i was travelling alone or with another adult.

And yes, there is some peeling paint. but the building is a very old downtown structure. Everything was very clean.
It was enjoyable meeting the other guests and sharing stories.

  • Liked — The location is fabulous. Owners have 3 wondeful felines. Good value for the $$
  • Disliked — The room was very warm and I could not open the window very wide.

This is not a good value for money place to stay. We had the 'romantic View Room' - it may look good on the website but is extremely poor. The room looks out over the very small outdoor garden/eating area/smoking area which faces the busy traffice main street and college just a couple of doors up. Constant noise from traffic at all hours, noisy at night, open window and cigarette smoke can be smelt from those smoking outside or noise of other residents sitting outside in area. The room was shabby, paint peeling from roof, rain dripped through beam in room on night of rain - needed towel on floor overnight, sink didn't drain, shared bathroom facilities are fair but sharing with large number of other residents and only two showers for everyone. Overall the owners are lovely and very helpful, ADVICE - book one of the Vancouver Hi Hostels -much better value for money and you get a decent breakfast as well.

  • Liked — Friendly owners
  • Disliked — Feel not an honest presentation of the accommodation and expensive for what it is

I was delighted with the quality of the private suite at the Urban Hideaway. (See photos below.)

Pluses:
* Very friendly staff. Kim gave me the grand tour and offered to help me find any activities I needed. She cheerfully pointed out places I could rent a bike, suggested where I could go once the bike was rented, and gave directions to the nearest "full bank" ATM.
* The room was clean and very comfortable. Nice bed, soft linens and towels, and well-decorated with plants galore near the window. The room was well-lit, though the view of activities across the street was only "okay."
* Access to a variety of loaner movies (DVD players in each room - but really, with so much to do in Vancouver!) and books; community kitchen.
* Good location. If you didn't know this place was here (look for the "Hotel St. Clair" on the tourist map, it's two doors down), you'd easily miss it. However, I was walking distance to the train station, harbor, and other activities.

Minus:
* One of the showers was inoperative (and was labeled as such). Thus, there was some contention for the working one. Since the floors are very creaky, it was kind of hard to go out and check without making a more noise than I would have preferred.

Summary: I'd definitely stay here again.
