“Amazing cottage by the ocean!!!”

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the boathouse and had the best time. The cottage was spacious for two, was a few feet from the water and had everything we needed. We spent hours just sitting on the deck watching the dolphins, seals and birds go by. The owners were super friendly and the property was beautiful. Amazing value!

“"The Boathouse" is just 10 feet from the shore”

Facing south from Salt Spring Island, "The Boathouse' is the smaller of the cottages at Daffodil Cove but it has a gorgeous close view of the sea from both the deck and inside. I watched sea lions and seals swim by. Well designed, beautifully but simply decorated. Nice kitchen. My favorite detail: after a day of rain, I could hear the stream burbling beneath the cottage as I sat in the house and lay in bed. I would definitely return'

“Small and Remote”

We travelled to Salt Spring Island with our son, his wife and their child, so there were five people in the cottage. The cottage is remote and is in a beautiful setting. The cottage was small for our group (rambunctious 2-year old!). The loft bedroom had low ceilings on the sides and it was awkward for my husband (who is 6'6"); he could only stand up straight in the middle of the room. We also had to be wary of the small child climbing the stairs. Access to the waterfront was difficult and steep. Owners were friendly and helpful. Towels were rather stiff and scratchy, but I understand and support the conservation/green measures taken by residents on the island. We had deer outside the cottage one morning.

The trail to the waterfront is down our driveway and then for the last little bit there are some stone steps with a railing then a few yards across a little meadow where the deer often gather in the evenings, and then another set of stone steps to a pretty area at the water where there is a bench for sitting in this pretty spot. We do aplolgize if towels are not soft, we hang them outside to dry instead of using the dryer with softening chemicals.

Sabine and Harold are excellent hosts. This cedar cottage with gorgeous views is surrounded by abundant wildlife and the verdant cedar forests of Saltspring Island. Don't miss it!

“We;d come here again in a flash!”

My partner, sister and I stayed at the Daffodil Cove Cottage from June 26th to July 3rd. Of the three places we stayed on this vacation, I find this cottage coming to mind most as I return to my work at home. In a pleasurable way, I hasten to add!

The design of this cottage is superb in every way. It is loft, with windows from floor to ceiling, in very beautiful shapes, on the ocean front. My partner and I stayed in the loft, which can be easily accessed by a set of sturdy wooden stairs – about ten in all, with handrails on either side. We had a spectacular view from our beds which faced out to the sea and stately evergreens which are so tall they tower above the cottage.

My sister had the back bedroom which was dark and quiet, exactly as she likes it. No view there at night, but all she had to do was to take a few steps into the large living room to have the panorama laid out before her like a picture postcard.

What made the surroundings so amazing was this cottage, along with the boat house and the owners' home, is that they border an ecological reserve, and everything is natural – well, as natural as is possible in today's world. So this view was always alive. The deer here do not startle or feel threatened, so we watched with great delight as every day does and their new fawns, and happy bucks, nibbled and frolicked in the meadow between the sea and the cottage. There were no deer fences because everything here is available to them and this reminds us that after all, they were here first, and it is rightfully theirs. This makes the experience of watching them very moving – it is quite different from living in town with a deer fence to protect what's yours.

The cottage is surrounded by the most Arbutus trees I have ever seen in one spot. They are magnificent, even though many are suffering from the fungi which are seriously affecting Arbutus trees throughout the west coast. There are also many Garry Oaks and Douglas Fir trees here, and the rainforest which surrounds the cottage is one of its chief draws. Sabine told us about a trail in the reserve which is about a foot wide, and meanders through the quiet, verdant rainforest. We loved that walk and took it twice.

A little practical information. We wondered if they had a coffee bean grinder: they do! There is a terrific place to buy excellent organic coffee beans in Ganges – everyone knows where it is so just ask.
Ganges is about a half-hour drive from the cottage, and everything you could possibly want can be found there. Be sure to stock up as Sabine advises! We followed up on a lead from a friend and purchased just-caught wild salmon in a little shop located on the main road that runs along the top of the harbour, just where you come up. It was the best fish we had anywhere during our two week vacation! Ask around – people are happy to point this place out. Same with the terrific bakery/coffee shop where we got some fabulous bread. Of the two supermarkets, we preferred the one located out of the town centre as parking was much easier to find. Be prepared to spend time looking for parking during the summer months in the town centre!

The market at Ganges on Saturday is spectacular! Breads, cheeses, lots of fresh veggies and a superb representation of crafts and jewellry made by the creative Salt Springers. We also enjoyed both red and white wines from the Salt Spring Vineyard but not from the vineyard right next door to it. In our opinion there was quite a difference in quality!

Fulford Market is a funky little throwback to the 50s done quite consciously by young people to recreate a time when folks liked to hang out and be friendly! To our amazement, the Mercantile Store has a small collection of books for sale that rival the holdings of the City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco back in the 60s! I was there, and I know! Far out stuff! And the little grocery store there has the strangest collection of items you will ever find in a convenience store. The odd thing is that they seemed to have everything we had forgotten to buy in Ganges including a fresh lime, and 5 brands of salsa! They also have great ice cream cones! The restaurant there is also very good!

The Daffodil Cove cottage is a priceless construction and a terrific location, so attention to a few very minor details here and there would spruce it up a great deal. New towels and facecloths would be a great improvement! A bar of soap in the bathroom would be a appreciated by those who come without any. It also should be pointed out in the website that there is no hairdryer; since most places have one, women today often travel without one.

We would have welcomed a better system for the division of garbage. The details of division differ from location to location, and we were surprised that no really good covered bins were available for glass, plastics and paper, and compostables, and no instructions were posted.

The chief thing that needs immediate repair is that a couple of areas of the deck railings on front are ready to come off the posts. If a heavy person should lean on them in those areas they could easily give way and it is a long way down!

The crispy Salal foliage in the small driveway between the Cottage sign and the cottage needs to be kept well trimmed back so that one's rental car doesn't get scratched during the first drive in before one realizes one has to steer clear.

Apart from these few details, we liked the cottage very much and felt very relaxed and at home there. It is rustic, and one has to remember that one is on an island and everything that comes to it must be brought there, and everything that comes has to leave it again in some form or another.

If you want a truly beautiful getaway where you and the rest of nature can enjoy a felicitous relationship, I highly recommend this beautiful place.

Thank you so much for your detailed description of the cottage and the surroundings! And thank you for your helpful comments. We do provide liquid soap on the bathroom sink and tub as it is more environmentally friendly than left-over bars. We sort the recyclables for you, from whatever is put in the blue recycle box in the unit. Deck railings are an important safety concern, thank you for letting us know!
