“Lovely B&B”
Reviewed 29 August 2011

This B&B served one of the best breakfasts I have ever had-- delicious and beautifully presented. The inn is very quiet, the yard is lovely and is convenient to to the stores and restaurants in Ganges- only about a 10 minute walk. The rooms are nicely decorated and the beds are comfortable. We stayed here near the end of a Gulf Island Bike trip and the inn provided a safe place to store our bikes. The innkeepers are very kind and gracious hosts.

We agree with the former review -- the owners are very nice and the breakfasts are delicious but the accommodation itself (we stayed in the cottage) needs extensive renovation to equate to the price that is charged. Example, in the bathroom the wall paint is peeling, the bathtub is stained and chipped, the linoleum and arborite are circa 1950 and generally it is pretty depressing to be paying over $200 a night for that. The bedroom and kitchen are very, very basic in standard - no luxury whatsoever there.
We would not return and know that others feel the same way -- another couple staying there mentioned to us (unprompted) that the rates are simply too high for the standard of accommodation. This is too bad, but travellers should be aware that you don't "get what you pay for."

I was looking at the reviews of other properties at this time of year and one word keeps coming up - overpriced. Unfortunately, it's expensive to operate a hotel on Salt Spring and all our rates reflect this. Most people forget, however, that the Wisteria includes breakfast in its rates. Breakfast alone sells for $20 per person and is probably worth a lot more. When you factor this into the equation, our rates are better than the others.

As for the condition of the cottage, I agree that it is not modern. Most people like it the way it is and, for this reason, we do not change it. The studios are more modern with soaker tubs, heated floors, flat screen tv's etc. and sell for the same rate. There's some touch-up work that can be done in the cottage when the season is over but, for now, we'll keep it rustic. Our guests can choose which they prefer.

If you're into a casual country-style guest house in keeping with the natural environment of a Southern Gulf Island with a wild styled garden of lavendar and Wisteria when in bloom, adirondack chairs on the deck and the feeling that you're returning to visit a lifelong friend, you're probably a good fit for this casual but professionally-run guest home.

My sister was visiting me from off island. I live somewhere too small for her to stay with me. She stayed in a double bed with the bathroom right next door. It was very clean and she said the bed was really comfortable. She said it reminded her of her childhood with a bright white chenille bedspread. It was a secluded room on the back side of the house with a bathroom immediately next door. There were interesting, small pieces of art and large dark side cabinets in a large hall leading to the large dining area.

The owners, Beverly and Len,are easy to be around and seem to know how to interact with guests to ameliorate those sometimes awkward first meetings at B&Bs.

In addition to the comfort, the breakfast was exceptional. It began with fresh island berries with syrupy smooth yogurt. The home-baked chocolate croissants sprinkled with almonds were exquisite. I wanted more than one (and there were lots more) but then the main part of the meal arrived and I was glad I'd refrained.

The white plate held a bite-sized crunchy biscuit, a perfectly poached egg with smooth hollandaise and even a tiny Thyme flower on top with two pieces of bacon and perfecly cooked asparagus. While it may sound like too much, the freshness of the food made for a satisfied but not stuffed feeling.

If you're looking for a Fairmont, and you only ever stay in hotels, this may not be right for you, but if you're looking to experience a place that replicates a lovely country feel, friendliness and the best breakfast my sister and I have ever had, you're probably going to be as happy staying here as she was. I'd definitely recommend to friends and I'm glad I've found her a homebase for when she comes to visit.

We were stunned when we drove up to the guest house, our hearts just dropped. It was a somewhat dumpy ranch looking house (it used to be a "rest home") in a neighborhood. What a disappointment. Really, does a can of paint cost that much! I do not understand how this place could be rated so highly. The breakfast was pretty good, but we spent a lot of money to stay at this place and expected much more. They should invest in a few flowers, many of the neighbors had nicer yards.

I agree about the paint. It was supposed to be done last year but we decided to build a deck around the guesthouse which needed to be done first. This spring we obtained the quotes of the paint job (incidentally, a 'can of paint' in our case costs close to $20,000) and then discovered that the roof leaks. We reshingled the entire roof which cost considerably more than a can of paint and which no one seems to notice! Next spring, we plan to finally get the place painted in order to complement our beautiful gardens. Some of our neighbours may have prettier flowers but none can compete with our wisteria when it's in bloom or the lavender that currently fills our front garden. Unfortunately, summer came late this year and these guests did not see our gardens at their best. We invite them to return next year and be prepared to be "stunned" by the beauty of the Wisteria Guest House.

I have long been a B&B hater, but I absolutely adored our stay at the Wisteria Guest House. We stayed here with our extended family as part of a wedding weekend on the island and the Wisteria was an oasis of calm in an otherwise hectic weekend. The breakfasts were out of this world - the fresh herbs and fruit included in every meal added such a great touch!

The plum cobbler with tea and mint was especially amazing!
