“What a gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2012

It is always nice when your expectations are exceeded. Hastings House does this from the moment you check in. The rooms are quaint and comfortable (loads of character). The food is worth the trip alone. Must do if on Saltspring.

There is something special about visiting a place off-season. The first night of our three-night stay, my husband and I were the only guests at Hastings House, and had the Manor House to ourselves. The quiet was amazing. This is the first year Hastings House has stayed open during the winter, and we hope they make a success of it so we can enjoy it again off-season. Though the dining room is closed in the winter, we had no problem finding excellent offerings in Ganges, a 10-minute walk from the hotel (Barb's Buns for lunch, Auntie Pesto and House Piccolo for dinner).

The hotel property is a slice of the English countryside. We enjoyed our comfortable, spacious room with its low timber-beamed ceilings, the crackling wood fires, afternoon tea, the ocean view, walks through the sculpture garden, and the beautiful grounds. We especially appreciated the hotel's pickup service at the Fulford Harbour ferry terminal, and managed quite nicely without having to rent a car -- another component of a relaxing weekend. (The Swartz Bay ferry terminal on Vancouver Island is a ten-minute cab ride from the Victoria airport, and ferries leave every couple of hours.)

The only thing that would have added to the weekend would have been a little more English attention to the tea offerings -- a proper teapot and a better selection of black teas in the room, in the Manor House lounge and on the morning muffin tray. But that is a minor blemish on a superlative weekend.

Thank you for your excellent review. The suggestion regarding the selection of teas is an excellent one and we will implement new varieties right away. We always take requests and haven't had any yet we couldn't accommodate. We encourage our guests to let us know if we are providing anything but the highest quality service during their stay so we can address any concerns immediately. We are looking forward to your return to show you we have taken your suggestions seriously.
It was a pleasure to have you as our guest and sincerely appreciate you sharing your experience on Tripadvisor.

Thank You

We have been wanting to get away to Hastings House ever since we returned to the West Coast four years ago. To say that it was amazing is an understatement. We were upgraded to "The Post" upon our arrival. Having our own little cottage to ourselves for three nights was magical. The food was wonderful, even though the restaurant was on it's last night of the season. They pulled out all the stops. Definitely a "10". Miley the sommelier was the best.
We had the resort to ourselves on Halloween night. Walked to town and enjoyed the atmosphere with the people who live there. Watched fireworks. It was a pleasure to be a part of that community for a short time. Highly recommend a visit. We will be back. You won't be disappointed if you go and it is worth every penny!

Room Tip: Would suggest that your last choice would be the manor house rooms. As this was built originally as...

My wife and I were at the Hastings House for a 3 day weekend to celebrate our anniversary. They treated us extremely well, the service from everyone from the front desk to the restaurant to the maids was great. Lots of nice touches like turn-down service with a little treat each night. Inthe morning, before breakfast, a pot of coffee and home made muffins were placed at our door. breakfast was included and each day we had our choice from the regular menu or the special of the day, which was quite special. The food is faboulous. We ate dinner at the hotel on Saturday, with my wife having the Alberta beef 3 course dinner and me having the Salttspring lamb 4 course dinner. Both were excellent, and while not inexpensive, were not overpriced relative to fine dining anywhre else. The wine list was also superb. Wonderful experience - highly recommended fpr a first class getaway. Saltspring Island itself was also very interesting. We visited a number or excellent galleries in Ganges and around the Island, tasted at the 3 wineries and even golfed nine holes at the local course.

Room Tip: Web site has good photos. no bad rooms here.

We booked this venue for our daughter's wedding and were very pleased with the extra attention to detail we received.
Manager Kelley booked a date & package that suited our needs for small wedding of 60 guests on the Hastings House grounds overlooking Ganges Harbour (a beautiful view and backdrop!).
Kelley allowed to change their all-inclusive wedding package to suit our needs, allowing us to bring our Pastor and photographer (usually included), while providing chair rental and set up, a beautiful wood Arbour (just for us!), a signing table with spotless linen & fresh flowers right from their on-sight gardens!
Our daughter & son-in-law also booked a room for the night (I'll let them write that review).
It was a large cottage room, close to the ceremony site, with a huge bathroom for the "girls" to get ready in.
Early check-in the day of the wedding allowed ample time for the wedding party to get ready, Kelley also provided the "snug" for the guys to use.
We really appreciated the use of the property for the photographer, who spent hours before & after the wedding taking tons of amazing pictures.
As Mom-of-the-Bride it was so nice to be able to relax and enjoy the ceremony, knowing that Kelley and his staff had our backs that day...even going the extra mile (literally), by delivering (and picking up) extra chairs to our separate reception venue.

If you are considering a Salt Spring Wedding, do yourself a favour and talk to the wonderful staff at the Hastings House!

Thank you Ruth for your wonderful comments. We try very hard to have our service to match our spectacular venues. It was a pleasure to contribute to your daughter Brittany's special occasion and wish her and her new husband Steven a wonderful life together.
