Catch the passenger ferry to a place with no RVs and tenting with lots of room. Big spaces for family sports close to the beach for (cold) swimming. Best tent camping around Nanaimo.

Just a short boat ride from the downtown park puts you on a picturesque island with lawns for games, rocky beaches full of barnacles and oysters to explore or swim from, many trails to hike and great views from all directions. The loop trail around the island is a couple of hours of good walking, but well work it for the variety of vegetation, views and terrain. Bathrooms and a little ice cream cafe complete the deal!

Easy hike we did with the family (no kids). We did the outer loop and did a bunch of exploring, ended up being about 13km on our tracker. Small hills and slopes but overall an easy hike if you're used to hiking up to the alpine. Great views of the water, ships and sea planes along the winding trail through the large trees. Rhododendrons everywhere and lots of interesting history to break up the hike into portions. Net time we might camp and rent some kayaks!

Signs could have been better halfway thru our hike, there are people asking for direction,( stated confusing) but one can’t go wrong just folllow the ocean.

Newcastle Island Park is a wonderful day, or weekend, getaway that sits only a few hundred yards from Nanaimo's shoreline.

This little island gem has lots of history from indigenous peoples to Japanese canneries to sandstone quarrying. The island is interwoven with trails, and there are many small beaches around to explore and swim. There are day use picnic areas, as well as many campsites for over-nighters, with plans in the making for more sites and trails. A small ferry service runs from downtown Nanaimo, and there is also a public dock if you wish to take your own boat. There is an information kiosk near the ferry dock, as well as washrooms with showers, and a pavilion that often offers food services

Newcastle Island is easy to hike around in an afternoon, but is best explored if you spend a couple nights.
