This island is absolutely magic. It is a healing place, and has been for centuries, for the Snuneymuxw Nation and is very easy to understand why once one sets foot on it.

There is a fabulous trail for walking, witnessing, experiencing nature or gourmet running.

The views all the way around are spectacular. The beaches offer swimming, resting, deep breathing, rejuvenation for body mind and spirit. The building - I hope it always is maintained as is and nothing else is built on the island! - has an fascinating history and the best and biggest dance floor on the island. What a great place for events from weddings to productions to celebrations.

The island is pristine, kept so for centuries by Snuneymuxw First Nation and continues to be kept so. The Nation and keepers of the island offer story-telling and salmon bbq's through the summer that deepen the experience of visiting.

I LOVE that it is only accessible by water, too. It is a very special place to visit.

A short ride across the harbour from Nanaimo, a selection of woodland and coastal trails on this small island. This is a good introduction to the forests of Vancouver Island, but is no match for the likes of Pacific Rim NP. More of a diversion away from town, or a place to picnic. One of the significant benefits of this place are the camping spots, and the activity I would genuinely reccommend if you venture here - peace and tranquility within sight of Nanaimo.

A very good choice of locale. Quiet, quirky, memorable, a perfect mix of civilized and rustic. Many chose to camp - we stayed in a hotel in Nanaimo a short walk from the ferry. Organizers arranged to hire the ferry staff into the night (last run was scheduled to be ~9:45pm). The skipper and crew were cheerful and helpful and the caterers did a good job. The facility is the old pavilion/dance hall from the 1920s/30s so open rafters, wooden floor, huge windows that lifted to give a gentle sea breeze through the building. We've been to the Island many times and hiked the loop around the Island almost every time and never had any complaints - clean, safe, (yes, rustic) and the views to the east across the Straits are incomparable. You can do the loop in roughly 2 hours; shoes recommended - not sandals.

This little island is a 10 minute ferry trip from Nanaimo downtown Harbour. It has both an interesting past and a protected and beautiful present. Close to 20 km of hiking trails go around and zig.zag accross the island. Spectacular views (make sure you have your camera) Accross the water to the mainland and back to Vancouver island; dozens of little beaches; views of big ships waiting to cross to Vancouver; spectacular old growth forests and a cople of small lakes thrown into the mix. Easy to hike as much or as little as you want in day or just an afternoon or evening.
