A very good choice of locale. Quiet, quirky, memorable, a perfect mix of civilized and rustic. Many chose to camp - we stayed in a hotel in Nanaimo a short walk from the ferry. Organizers arranged to hire the ferry staff into the night (last run was scheduled to be ~9:45pm). The skipper and crew were cheerful and helpful and the caterers did a good job. The facility is the old pavilion/dance hall from the 1920s/30s so open rafters, wooden floor, huge windows that lifted to give a gentle sea breeze through the building. We've been to the Island many times and hiked the loop around the Island almost every time and never had any complaints - clean, safe, (yes, rustic) and the views to the east across the Straits are incomparable. You can do the loop in roughly 2 hours; shoes recommended - not sandals.
