This little island is a 10 minute ferry trip from Nanaimo downtown Harbour. It has both an interesting past and a protected and beautiful present. Close to 20 km of hiking trails go around and zig.zag accross the island. Spectacular views (make sure you have your camera) Accross the water to the mainland and back to Vancouver island; dozens of little beaches; views of big ships waiting to cross to Vancouver; spectacular old growth forests and a cople of small lakes thrown into the mix. Easy to hike as much or as little as you want in day or just an afternoon or evening.

We recently visited this small, idyllic island and were blown away by the beauty of the place. The beaches are picturesque. Some are perfect for swimming, some for beachcombing, and some for just taking in the view. There was even a restaurant to buy food if you didn't bring a picnic lunch. There are also tons of hiking trails to explore for those people that are up for a walk! I highly recommend taking the short and very affordable ferry ride over to explore this island!

Went over late morning & stayed most of the day. Took over a cooler with snacks & drinks. It was very dry due to the hot summer. Had a great day on the beach & in the water (a little cool). I didn't venture out around the island, but many did.

Ferry to the island is only c$5 return. We went on an extremely hot day and very much enjoyed it. We did cut our trip short due to the heat which was a disappointment as we were looking forward to a longer walk. We did however have a very good bowl of seafood chowder at the cafe near the ferry jetty. Recommended.

Saysutshun (Newcastle Island) is just a short passenger ferry ride from Nanaimo harbour.

Bring good walking shoes, a picnic and a camera.

There are many beaches that are excellent for picnics or a quick swim. And there are plenty of trails for walking although not all of them are accessible for people with physical disability.

Keep an eye out for wildlife like raccoons, herons, deer and a multitude of birds.

The walking trails present many opportunities for stunning views of the ocean and mountains and of Nanaimo itself. Watch the ferries come through into Departure Bay of you are so inclined.

The beaches on the Nanaimo side of the island are great for finding oyster and clam shells and the occasional moon snail.

Before you leave, make sure to stop in to the restaurant to read up on the island history and grab and ice cream!
