“Beautiful historic hotel offering excellent service”
Reviewed 15 June 2012

I loved staying at the Fairmont MacDonald in Edmonton - the rooms have kept their old world charm while some nice updates have been done to the bathrooms, and sitting areas. The gym facility is better than many hotels I've stayed in, and the Harvest Room is a lovely spot to unwind with a glass of wine at the end of the day. The architecture, wrought iron and ornamental wood throughout is well preserved and the hotel staff was attentive and service-oriented. Great hotel!

My husband and I along with our dog Maggie spent a weekend at the hotel in February of 2012. Their attention to every detail large or small was outstanding. When we arrived in our room there was a dog bed and dog dishes for our Maggie. Nice touch. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The door men even greated Maggie by name. The room was outstanding in its old world charm and the bed was the best i have ever slept in. We had the bed and breakfast special. The breakfast buffet was wonderful. The hotel is close to shopping and dining. I would recommend this hotel in a heart beat. It was pricey but well worth it. We are looking forward to our next stay at this wonderful old hotel.

Room Tip: Over looking the river valley

The fairmont hotel macdonald is the smallest Fairmont property. It has the feel of a european boutique hotel.

It is located on the rise overlooking the North Saskatchewan river (ask for a riverside view). The views from the hotel including its large outdoor patio and garden overlooking the river valley are great in summer.

The hotel is conveniently located to the downtown area with the art gallery, symphony hall and Citadel Theatre just a 5 minute walk away. Also close by is Winston Churchill Square, the scene of many summer outdoor festivals.

The hotel itself is an historic railway hotel with an historic feel to it. Queen Elizabeth had stayed here as other noted celebrities.

The dining room, The Harvest Room is a q uality restaurant. It serves vegan and gluten free alternatives. On one occassion the sous chef came to check on a dining guest of mine who had expressed a lactose intolerance. On a recent special, a birthdday cake was presented at no charge.

The Confederation Lounge is a warm and confortable bar. It gets its name from a massive oil painting of the Fathers of the Canadian Confederation (1867). One of its bartenders was recently awarded a distinction by our local hospitality industry for his service to customers.

For best rates, go online to Fairmont.com and join their president's club. There is no charge. You will receive a monthly email of special offers, great dates, great ratesm

Love this hotel. We have been lucky enough to get a river view whenever we have stayed here and it is so picturesque in every season. The rooms are tastefully furnished with all the usual Fairmont amenities. The hotel has been so well restored that it is like going back in time. Even though we usually take the elevator I love the big wide staircase that goes up to the rooms. We have enjoyed meals in their beautiful restaurant and in the bar and the location is excellent for downtown Edmonton. Worth the splurge.

I stayed at the 'Mac' for one specific reason, even though I reside in Edmonton. I was one stay away from being bumped up in the Fairmont President's Club program, so I thought i might as well stay one more night so I could achieve that status.

The Mac is a lovely old building, carefully restored to its former grandeur. I stayed with some friends, and my goodness is the staff caring. They upgraded us from the least expensive room in the hotel to a large corner room with a river view. The room was about the size of two and a half hotel rooms in an average Westin-type hotel. Also, it had windows on two walls. 6 windows in total, plus two in the bathroom. Just a great experience. The hotel is really like stepping into the past, it is so nicely restored.

The views are unparalleled, the North Saskatchewan River valley is one of Edmonton's best features. It has hundreds of kilometers of jogging/walking/biking trails, and is just plain nice to look at. The rooms are well insulated and quiet. Didn't hear a peep from the neighbours. Even though it is in my hometown, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Mac again.
