Description: Smuggler’s Inn originally began in 1967 as Bar X Steakhouse, an American company. The current owner, Frank Krowicki, bought out his partners and went to work developing a brand new concept to Calgary. His vision included a mix of casual, late night fine dining and live piano bar. Over the years, the building expanded around Smuggler’s Inn, with the addition of Winelite dining room on the west side, and Backstreet lounge and dining room on the north side. As the dining scene in Calgary began to change, Frank too saw a need to change and adapt. The first endeavour was the conversion of Backstreet lounge to Open Sesame in 2000. Open Sesame has been serving fresh, Pan Asian cuisine to happy customers ever since. The conversion of Backstreet dining room to Bolero was complete in 2007. As Calgary’s first Brazilian style steakhouse, Bolero continues to satisfy meat lovers with its unique and interactive style of dining. Our latest addition is Tango Bistro, on the west side of the building, which once was Winelite dining room. At Tango Bistro, we bring together fresh, locally inspired comfort dishes with a focus on cold, sustainable seafood and top quality steaks. In May 2013, Smuggler’s Inn celebrated 40 years of serving mouth-watering Alberta prime rib and steaks alongside many original items, which have made us famous around the world. Four restaurants under one roof keeps us busy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. And the rest, as they say, is history! It's a great looking wooden building, and the furniture is also just as interesting - big throne-style chairs on wheels. The menu was equally impressive, with a big range of steaks, ribs, chicken, seafood and more.

I had the baby back ribs - and they were huge - hanging over both ends of my plate!
All main meals include soup and the salad bar.

I heard one of the servers list all the desserts - and there were multiple ones that sounded very interesting - but after a big meal of ribs, a dessert was unfortunately not an option.

We frequently dine at Smugglers Inn, and this time we celebrated my birthday with my husband and young children. Smugglers is amazing, the entree’s are delish and consistency is on point! The salad and soup bar has a fantastic selection, and the service is second to none. We NEVER leave disappointed, all around fabulous place to dine, whether it be family night with the kids, or for your anniversary & yes, i know that’s a broad spectrum but I seriously mean it. The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting and the prices are EXTREMELY REASONABLE considering the high quality of the food. Everything on the menu is SO GOOD, and the staff at smugglers is out of this world it’s our go-to for a great dinner experience every time. Thank you for the scrumptious birthday mud pie❤️

Our daughter requested Prime Rib night at the Smugglers Inn for her birthday supper. We had never been there before but she spoke highly of it saying both suppers and the breakfast buffet were wonderful the times she had gone there. We had a bit of a tricky time getting a reservation and there were only 2 spots left for a party of 3 when we called so I suggest on weekend evenings you arrange to call ahead of time or be flexible with your times. Parking was a bit crowded but we found a spot, wen we left there were a couple of cars waiting for people to leave to get their spots in the lot. The building was probably wheelchair accessible but not too sure how . . . the bathrooms are in the basement, there must be an elevator somewhere for those who need it or else a handicapped washroom on the main floor. Decor was very "ship like" with lots of wood, heavy upholstered chairs (on wheels so you could easily get out) and clean but dimly lit. The salad bar was worth a visit all on it's own! I did not try the soup but my husband and daughter said their selections were very good. We ordered the prime rib which is a special on Sunday. It was done to perfection and served with a nice selection of seasonal veggies and mashed potatoes. For desert we has a warm banana bread which I was not too fond of, but warm bananas are not really my thing. Hubby and daughter liked it. I would like to suggest they offer a bit of a choice with this meal, perhaps rice instead of mashed potatoes for those who are not too fond of potatoes? And maybe just plain ice cream instead of the banana bread? To be honest I did not ask if substitutions were available but will next time . . . and there will be a next time! Service excellent, friendly but not annoying, efficient clearing of tables, and order was correct and served nicely. They even brought my daughter a special extra desert with a candle for her birthday, the mud pie was excellent since they provided 3 spoons for her to share with Mom and Dad!

I have frequented Smuggler's Inn over a period of decades. It is an old Calgary tradition. It still serves very good prime rib and the service is excellent. I did miss good old-fashioned potato salad though! The atmosphere is very relaxed and inviting. It's nice to know that you can still fill up on the salad bar and soups, even before the main entrée.

We went to this spot because it was close to the hotel. When waiting to be seated other guests it was a Calgary hidden jem. They were right. Food was amazing and wide selection and all fresh. Helen at the omelet station was very friendly and smiling. We will be going back next time we are in Calgary.
