“One of Calgary's two most interesting bridges”

Centre Street Bridge
Ranked #95 of 320 things to do in Calgary
Attraction details

The other one is the Calatrava Peace Bridge. This Centre Street Bridge is reasonably attractive, now that it has been renovated. The four lions are works of art. Nevertheless, in comparison with other bridges in Canada, the USA, Europe and Asia, it is not particularly remarkable.

Even though it is more than 100 years old, the Centre Street Bridge is one of Calgary's hardest working structures. Many vehicles use the upper deck to get into the downtown in the morning, and leave downtown for the north after work, and the City has lane reversals in effect to make that commute quicker and safer (so pay attention if you're driving!). There are lovely residential neighbourhoods just north of downtown, and many downtown workers use the generous sidewalks to walk or cycle to work and back (although technically, cyclists are supposed to dismount, but they often don't). The lower deck is strictly for vehicles, and is also subject to reverse lanes for rush hour, but it remains a bit of white-knuckle drive for those squeamish about driving in close quarters. It brings vehicles directly from south downtown to Memorial Drive which is in north Calgary. Of course, with its classical design, and simple, yet beautiful illumination, it remains an icon structure that is simply gorgeous to look at, day or night.

The neat thing about this bridge is that it is the delination point for the four quadrants (SE SE NE and NW) of the city. It is an old bridge that crosses the Bow river, North of downtown. Opened in 1916, it has two decks; the upper deck crosses Memorial Drive while the lower deck connects Riverfront avenue with Memorial Drive.

This beautiful bridge has 4 lions that were originally designed by a city of Calgary employee - based on the lions found in Trafalgar Square in London, England. After many years, the lions were deteriorated to the point where they had to be removed. Replica lions were created and placed during the year 2000 renovations.

One of many historic outdoor attractions in Calgary. Include this bridge on your downtown (Bow) river walk. Has the four lion statues on the 4 corners of the bridge.

This bridge has been in Calgary all my life. It has stone lions on guard. It is is the gateway to downtown Calgary. The only problem is traffic patterns change during rush hours which can confuse our visitors so you must be aware of this. The bridge is walk able and crosses over the bow river. If you energetic you could spend a couple of hours on it looking at the scenery or downtown Calgary.
