“Two Very Different Rooms at the Fairmont”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2012

I recently spent eight nights in the Fairmont Palliser in two very different rooms. The first was a ninth floor room with a queen sized bed. Although the room was enormous by New York hotel standards it suffered from too many partial renovations which resulted in a mishmash of styles and colors - reds, deep green, striped wallpaper, blue tiled floor, etc. Still, the bed was comfortable and the flatscreen television was nice. Unfortunately, the thermostat was purely decorative. I couldn't change the temperature up or down and more than a few nights I woke up sweaty and uncomfortable. I did alert the front desk and they sent someone up to fix it while I was out of the room but there was no change to the air. More importantly, a moldy smell began to grow from barely noticeable to suddenly overpowering. I requested a room change and was given one immediately. My second room was on the fourth floor and featured a King bed and a recent whole-room renovation. Everything about it was nicer but while the room was generally cooler than the first the fancy thermostat in this room didn't work to alter the temperature either. The best thing about this hotel is the room service menu which features not only a large selection of entrees but also vegan, diabetic, low-sodium diet menus. I indulged in the vegan lentil soup twice, as well as a raw vegetable/fruit salad that was pretty tasty. There's a nice gym and an okay indoor pool that was always overrun with screaming kids whenever I passed by. Saturday was a parade of wedding parties posing on the front steps and noisy receptions off the main lobby. Overall, it's a decent if dated and overly fussy hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a recently renovated room.

On the day we arrived at the Fairmont Calgary Palliser, we were greeted by the friendly helpful staff, and they will walk an extra mile for you. Great customer service and very professional. We enjoyed every moment staying in this hotel. They have a beautiful hot pool on site and it is where you want to visit after your flight. The hotel has its own character and it is beautifully decorated. The room was spacious and clean. The housekeeping did a good job. We visited the resturant and was quite disappointed with their food. The waitress was very helpful and very professional. I would recommand this hotel to anyone who need a place to stay in Calgary.

We stayed in this property for the Stampede,.
Our room was tiny, there was no where to put clothes apart from from around 8 hangars in a utility cupboard. The bathroom very, very small. We had a fantastic view of the state railway which was oh such a joy to hear at 2am.
The check-in staff did not mention anything about the restaurants or any other facilties at the property.
We had a staff member try to open the room door at 4am on the first night whilst giving us the bill
despite the fact that we had already paid for 3 nights. We will never be your "guests" again.

Room Tip: Chsoe another Hotel

We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to post a review on TripAdvisor. We regret to learn that your experience was less than exceptional and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience these concerns may have caused during your stay. It is unfortunate to learn that our Front Desk Agents did not inform you on the Oak Room Lounge and Rimrock Restaurant which are located within the property. We can assure you that this is not our standard, and we thank you for your understanding. We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back, in hopes of restoring your confidence in us.

Kind Regards,

I just returned home from a 2 night stay at the Palliser. It is an elegant old hotel centrally located next to the Calgary Tower. The lobby is grand and the staff service was excellent.

However, I was quite disappointed with the room, particularly the bathroom (I was in Room 1006, which is a Large double). The bedroom itself was large, and traditionally appointed (that is what you expect at the older Fairmont properties, although I think they are soon going to have to rethink their room designs if they want to continue to be competitive in major urban markets where more customers seem to want a more updated feel).

The real disappointment came when I went into the bathroom. The bathroom was very tiny, which I can understand in an older hotel, but it was extremely run down looking. The bathtub looked like it had probably been reglazed or painted several times, and the walls around the sink were dirty and wallpaper patches had been poorly done. The clothes drying line in the bathtub was broken and the line was dangling outside the fixture. Yellow stains on the ceiling didn't add to the ambience either. I would have expected better if I'd been staying at a Best Western.

Although I stay at Fairmont hotels regularly when I travel, on my next visit to Calgary I would likely stay somewhere else unless I'd heard that this hotel had received a major renovation.

The lobby is spectacular and very impressive. Reception staff was friendly and had no problem accepting our dog. Our room (a junior suite) was very clean and modern with comfortable furniture. The bathroom needed some work as there was mold around the tiles and some of the wallpaper was peeling. The a/c did not appear to be working well so we had to open the windows which solved the problem as it was a warm day/evening in Calgary. Overall it was a comfortable stay with only minor distractions. I do not recommend this hotel when traveling with pets as it is very difficult to find a place to walk them in the midst of downtown Calgary.
