“Room's Fine...but that's it.”
Reviewed 11 March 2012

SO I just spent 3 weeks at this hotel. For a downtown Calgary property, I got a pretty decent rate considering the Westin next door was about double. My first observation is that the rooms (I stayed in 4 different ones over the 3 weeks) were clean, well appointed and comfortable and the housekeeping staff did an exceptional job to the smallest detail every day. Not to be mean spirited but that's where the kudos end. The staff are hit and miss on both skill and politeness and one young lady was actually downright RUDE to an incredible level. I didn't actually have a choice or I would have walked out given how much money I was spending over 3 weeks!! They don't seem to be able to communicate and see your stay as a continuous whole especially if you need to check in and out occasionally over the course of the stay as I did. There is no reason why you get the room you do as I got a 2 bedroom room twice and a one bedroom room twice with exactly the same room rate. The customer experience is awful as a result. The need to swipe your key in the elevator is a hassle even though it's apparently for your 'security' in a city where there's almost no discernible crime and the rooms all have 3-4 locks on the doors. The restaurant is very mediocre and overpriced and the room service while fast is also overpriced...nevertheless par for the course given the cost of the city as a whole. The door to the +15 pedestrian network closes WAY TOO early in the evening and on weekends and is more likely a result of their not wanting the hassle of managing it as much as for again 'security' the much used excuse. The elevators are unbearably loud until they lessen later in the evening and the views from the lower floors are nonexistent given the proximity of neighboring buildings. The fact that the hotel is not affiliated with a national chain is a shame since you cannot earn points, miles etc. I would recommend shopping around more if possible if you must stay in downtown Calgary.

Room Tip: The higher floors away from elevators with an even numbered room will provide the quietest room with...

We stayed here while we were in town for a Flyers/Flames game, this past weekend. The luggage porter guy (no clue what the professional term is for them) was the friendliest of the hotel staff we encountered, and he wasn't even portering our luggage! When we checked in, we were asked for a credit card for a $50 deposit on the room, for any additional charges (room service, movies, damage, etc) that we incurred during our stay. They ended up waiving it for us; though I was slightly put off since there was nothing on their website, nor any other site that mentioned this.
The elevators need the room key to go to any floor other than the main floor, which I really like as a security feature. The room was nice, clean and non-smoking. We were on the 14th floor, at the end so there was no view, but it was away from the noisy elevators. The room is a suite and has a fridge, microwave, kettle and coffee maker with star bucks coffee and tea! I made some coffee (it's starbucks!!) but the machine smelled awful when it was on, like it hadn't been cleaned in a while and smelled like burning coffee. Did not enjoy the coffee so I had tea. But there is a Tim's about 1/2 a block down and a Starbucks on almost every corner downtown so I was covered! However, there was a sticky coffee stain on one of the two spoons they leave for you, kind of like someone stirred coffee and let it dry, so that was gross. The bed was wonderfully comfortable with fluffy pillows and a tv in front of the bed. The sitting area was nice, but the windows and patio doors leaked cold air like mad! The bathroom was shockingly small compared to the rest of the suite; pray that no one walks in while you are on the toilet (door doesn't lock) because your knees will take it all! The shower pressure is weak, and you can't turn the head to spray anywhere but straight down to the drain. Oh, and there is no fan in the bathroom (super big negative).
They also charge for internet in the room. We were given the codes, but as we were logging on it said we would be charged $9.95 for 24 hours. We called to clarify, and were told yes, that is the charge unless we want to use the business hook up cord thing. Um, no thanks, and there was probably no point in bringing my laptop to work on homework anyways. We fonud a Starbucks so we could check the highway reports before we left.
The pool and hot tub area were nice, and completely empty, which doesn't surprise me since this hotel does not strike me as a "family" type hotel, although we only stayed one night, so I shouldn't base too much on that since the only other hotel patrons we saw were some party kids being too loud in the lobby, just after we ran into a grumpy Flames fan (flames lost that night)
We were charged $8 for parking in the parkade, which is a great price for Calgary downtown, but there was barely any spots that didn't have "reserved" on them, and that made parking really frustrating at some points.
We also asked about a late check out when we checked in, and were told to call down to the front desk in the morning. We thought that was odd, but waited and called in the morning, and when we did, were told that they just couldn't do it, they were "too busy". Why have us call then? Tell us when we check in and ask first.
Overall, this is a nice hotel, however, we will probably not stay again. For a hotel like this, there should be free internet in all of the rooms, and nicer staff. We felt more welcome at a less expensive hotel the night before.

I got a special rate for this hotel for a Saturday...saying that, however, I was placed right beside the elevator, so the noise from it was very evident and my room was a little dated.
But, the room was very spacious, and had an opening balcony. There was a separate sitting area from the bedroom and the bed, itself, was very comfortable. There was a fridge and a microwave, a sink and a table too, so I was able to spread out instead of being crammed into a smaller room.
The hotel staff were very kind and courteous, and parking in downtown Calgary was a dream at $9 for the night.
All in all it was a very positive experience, and I would recommend this hotel

If you are looking for an excellent downtown Calgary stay on Saturday night. The International Hotel Suites is the place to stay. Saturday prices are not bad at all, and the rooms are very spacious, comfortable and the staff is excellent. Walking distance from China Town, Eau Claire Market Mall and a great little Mexican pub/restaraunt called Don Quijote, this is a very good place to stay.

Room Tip: VIP Expedia clients will get a little bonus here at this hotel.

We stayed in a King suite which was recommended by the front desk clerk during our reservation and were impressed with the size!
Our adult daughters came for Christmas Eve and we ate around the huge dining table with lots of room to spare.
Staff was excellent, location terrific and a great holiday rate. Highly recommended.
