“Perfect from beginning to end!”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

It's been five years since we've been here and it's only gotten better. I don't think they have ever stopped expanding, and they continue to do it beautifully. We took our whole family there, our daughter, her husband and their two small children, ages 4 and ten months, and our son and his wife. Everybody of every age loved it, especially our 4 year old grandson. The pools, lazy river, and water slides were fantastic. Our Grand Master Suite was more then spacious for four of us, and my daughter's family had a Master Suite which was well suited for them. They provided a high chair and a crib for the baby too. We were able to go on exchange points from our Hilton Timeshare exchanging them for this RCI property. While they did try to talk us into a timeshare presentation when we first checked in we firmly told then no and they never bothered us again.

Short and Sweet:
#1 Don't worry about the water. it's filtered (in the kitchen); Ice is OK too.
#2 Check in was easy-we came in on Friday around 3:30 PM. At the pool by 4:15
#3 The GM staff-maids, bartenders, servers, etc are wonderful!
#4 Choice of the pools-so many to try out
#5 Lazy river-lots of fun!
#6 Rooms were pretty comfortable. I'm not picky about beds, but my husband said it was a little harder than he'd like. Maid service EVERY DAY
#7 2 for 1 drinks from 12 PM on in varying locations--pool bars, cafes, and restaurants. We paid 85 pesos for 2 drinks during happy hours.

The bad:
#1 LOCATION Husband can't walk very far (back surgery) which made using a taxi to go ANYWHERE a must. Walmart for groceries was about $12 (US) round trip. Going anywhere to eat outside the resort was $7-10 (US) RT. We would normally have taken the bus, but just walking to the front of the resort was out of his ability.
#2 Charges to the room was subject to an additional 16% tax.
#3 Restaurants plentiful but I felt a bit on the high side. $13 US for a burger and fries?

THE UGLY:
#1 The lies the time share people tell you to get you to go to the presentation. We were PROMISED 90 minutes. 5 hours later, we were 'released.' AND we did not get what they promised us. The timeshare guy was 'shocked' when I told him I was livid about the time we wasted telling him over and over and over "NO." My advice. Don't go, just keep saying no and don't believe what they say they'll give you. It won't happen.

If you're like us, we don't get to vacation all that often. Spending 5 of those precious hours on the presentation just to get some stuff wasn't worth it.

Room Tip: The only ones who get an ocean view are actual owners. So if you're doing a Groupon, timeshare e...

We just returned from a week at the Grand Mayan resort in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Unfortunately, I have to say that it was a disappointment in many ways. We arrived on a Friday around 4pm only to find that we did not have a room ready. Since we had already stopped for groceries on the way to the resort, we needed to find a place for the perisable food. Ultimately, our room wasn't ready until about 6:15pm. It turns out that the week before Easter and the week after Easter are holiday times for the local Mexican people and the resort was full to capacity because of this. Mental note to not travel until at least the Sat or Sun the week following Easter weekend. Although we are owners at the Mayan Palace resort, it was closed for upgrading so we were put in the Grand Mayan. Our expectation of an ocean view became a parking lot view instead in a room that needed upgrading. Our housekeeping was not good all week either. Three days in a row we needed to search out some washcloths as our dirty ones were taken and not replaced. The unit did not have a dishwasher and, although we really didn't eat much there, the housekeeping did not even wash our dishes. The bed was a large king size bed, probably the firmest mattress I've ever slept on. We got used to it and it was okay. However, I didn't like the pillows at all.
Probably most annoying to me was that we had to pay for internet use. It was $170 pesos/day or $950/week. I think that is ridiculously expensive.
Basically, everything was expensive at this resort. It seems like once they get you there, they try to squeeze every penny out of you.
The pool area is fantastic and the servers were very good also. We did like the Lazy River and it was quite popular. People do put their towels and personal items on the pool chairs each day, so be ready to do the same in order to reserve a chair at least by 9am, earlier on the weekends.
The beach was also very nice, lots of chairs and umbrellas. The sand by the water is easy for taking walks. There are plenty of vendors selling their wares on the beach but they do not push if you just politely say 'no thanks'.
Overall, I don't plan to return to this place until the rooms are upgraded. For us personally, I think the resort is almost too big. It's a bit of a hike to get from the hotel to the beach. The pool area is huge (good and bad sides to this fact).

Room Tip: We were in the main building on the 8th floor. If you aren't going to get an ocean view, ask fo...

We spent 2 weeks with friends at the Grand Mayan, each couple in their own 1 bedroom unit. Unit was very spacious, fabulous balcony, no ocean view, but enjoyed the morning sun! Used the plunge pool every afternoon after a day at the pool or beach. Towels start going on the chairs by 6 am.....walk over to the pool at the Mayan palace, much nicer view and no need to get up early. Lots of restaurants within a 10 minute walk off resort....Eddie's was a favorite...all with free wifi. Did enjoy prime rib night at Tramonto's....enough for two to share! This was our second visit, would go again.

Check in took 2 hours- not waiting in line but the process. Promised ocean view room several times and did not receive it. Room was clean but very very disappointed about the view. Breakfast at Samba only buffet and very expensive. No hot water in the shower for four days and asked it to be repaired at least twice a day. Internet down and since I own a business it was important to have. Help at the Internet cafe extremely rude and difficult. No dream vacation and won't stay here again.
