We stayed at The Occidental Grand NV Jan.30th-Feb.6th, 2013. We really enjoyed this smaller resort. It was a very relaxing and quiet holiday which is what we were looking for. If you are looking for that kind of vacation this is the place for you. This hotel has been completely renovated and updated and is very clean and modern. The rooms are very nice. We had a room overlooking the construction of the new adult pool. Our room had an ocean view even though we didn't book that, I think all the rooms have ocean views actually. The construction did not bother us and we were very happy to hear they are continuing to update the hotel. Other people were complaining they had rooms overlooking the construction, but how can they update and improve without having some construction??? It was a non-issue for us.
We also did hear complaints about the time-share people, but honestly if you are polite and friendly and just say "no thank-you" they didn't bother you. When you first arrive to check in at the hotel just go directly to the front desk to check in. The time-share people will be offering you warm towels and cold drinks. We politely kept going directly to the front desk. Having said all that, we did meet some people who were very happy to have spent time with the time-share salesperson in order to get the free stuff they offer (excursions etc).
Pool(s): There is one larger pool without a swim up bar. It seemed to be a nice size for the resort and they had the daily activities such as water aerobics and water volleyball etc. The bar and snack bar are literally steps from this pool so everything is nice and close...in fact, the buffet is just steps away also. If you prefer to get away from the pool activities just sit on the beach instead. There is also a small, shallow childrens pool.
Beach: The beach was beautiful. We usually go to the Mayan Riviera for vacation and we knew going to PV that the ocean water wouldn't be as clear. We had a great time in the water with the waves and nice clean non-rocky beach. Be careful, the waves will sometimes knock you down but once you get past that point you can float around in the water, it's very nice. There were kayaks and boogie boards if you wanted to try that. There was beach volleyball everyday. The vendors on the beach come around and try to sell their trinkets but again, if you are polite and friendly and say "no thank-you" they will keep on going. Some of them are pretty funny and it made us laugh with some of their sales pitches. Apparently there are whales in the bay and a few people thought they saw killer whales not far from the shoreline in front of the hotel. We did not see any whales but apparently they are there :) There were a lot of little fish jumping from time to time when we were in the water.
Food: The buffet always had a great variety of food. We always found enough good stuff to eat. I wouldn't say it was out-standing food, but typical all-inclusive buffet food. Obviously if you go closer to opening time, the food seems fresher and more plentiful. It seemed like the later you went the worse things got in terms of selection etc. Perhaps they could improve that service with making sure they top up the food on a more regular basis with fresh replacements. The little snack bar at the pool had all that lovely greasy food .... hamburgers, fries, nachoes, etc. I would love to make a suggestion to the hotel that it would be nice to have an ice-cream bar or something like that at the snack bar. In the buffet they would offer some ice-cream or sherbert but it would be nice down by the pool/beach area for an afternoon treat. I would also have liked to have the option of room-service, which I understand you can get if you upgraded to the "Royal club", but it didn't bother us too much.
Rooms: as mentioned above, our room was very nice and updated. I would have liked to have more hooks or towel bars in the bathroom. As our room (and most others) do not have a balcony it's nice to have some places to hang your damp clothing to dry. There is a retractable clothes drying "rope/string" thing in the shower but more hooks for just the damp clothing and towels would be nice in the bathroom. Our bed was quite firm, which seems to be a common comment. There is a small fridge in the room with a few water bottles and beer/pop etc. We were there for a week and it seemed our fridge only got re-stocked once. The one time it got re-stocked was the one time we put a $20 peso in there as a tip. We forgot to put a tip in there again and it never got re-stocked (suprise, surprise). That was unacceptable to us and it should be addressed by management. We have paid an all-inclusive fee and we expect to have water restocked daily. We do tip the maid and people working around the resort so we are very generous that way, but we did forget about the fridge and I don't think we should have gotten excluded because there wasn't a tip in there. That is probably my only big complaint about the whole resort. Having said that, there was fresh water every-where and we brought our own insulated cups/mugs so it was never a problem and the resort is small enough it's not far to go for a drink.
All in all we had a great vacation at the Occidental NV. We would definately return to this resort and we will recommend it to friends and family. We always felt safe and secure and we really enjoyed the beach for long walks. We are looking forward to the new adult pool and the new activity centre being built. Do not hesitate to book this resort if you are looking for relaxation and quiet. Enjoy!
