We stayed at The Occidental Grand NV Jan.30th-Feb.6th, 2013. We really enjoyed this smaller resort. It was a very relaxing and quiet holiday which is what we were looking for. If you are looking for that kind of vacation this is the place for you. This hotel has been completely renovated and updated and is very clean and modern. The rooms are very nice. We had a room overlooking the construction of the new adult pool. Our room had an ocean view even though we didn't book that, I think all the rooms have ocean views actually. The construction did not bother us and we were very happy to hear they are continuing to update the hotel. Other people were complaining they had rooms overlooking the construction, but how can they update and improve without having some construction??? It was a non-issue for us.

We also did hear complaints about the time-share people, but honestly if you are polite and friendly and just say "no thank-you" they didn't bother you. When you first arrive to check in at the hotel just go directly to the front desk to check in. The time-share people will be offering you warm towels and cold drinks. We politely kept going directly to the front desk. Having said all that, we did meet some people who were very happy to have spent time with the time-share salesperson in order to get the free stuff they offer (excursions etc).

Pool(s): There is one larger pool without a swim up bar. It seemed to be a nice size for the resort and they had the daily activities such as water aerobics and water volleyball etc. The bar and snack bar are literally steps from this pool so everything is nice and close...in fact, the buffet is just steps away also. If you prefer to get away from the pool activities just sit on the beach instead. There is also a small, shallow childrens pool.

Beach: The beach was beautiful. We usually go to the Mayan Riviera for vacation and we knew going to PV that the ocean water wouldn't be as clear. We had a great time in the water with the waves and nice clean non-rocky beach. Be careful, the waves will sometimes knock you down but once you get past that point you can float around in the water, it's very nice. There were kayaks and boogie boards if you wanted to try that. There was beach volleyball everyday. The vendors on the beach come around and try to sell their trinkets but again, if you are polite and friendly and say "no thank-you" they will keep on going. Some of them are pretty funny and it made us laugh with some of their sales pitches. Apparently there are whales in the bay and a few people thought they saw killer whales not far from the shoreline in front of the hotel. We did not see any whales but apparently they are there :) There were a lot of little fish jumping from time to time when we were in the water.

Food: The buffet always had a great variety of food. We always found enough good stuff to eat. I wouldn't say it was out-standing food, but typical all-inclusive buffet food. Obviously if you go closer to opening time, the food seems fresher and more plentiful. It seemed like the later you went the worse things got in terms of selection etc. Perhaps they could improve that service with making sure they top up the food on a more regular basis with fresh replacements. The little snack bar at the pool had all that lovely greasy food .... hamburgers, fries, nachoes, etc. I would love to make a suggestion to the hotel that it would be nice to have an ice-cream bar or something like that at the snack bar. In the buffet they would offer some ice-cream or sherbert but it would be nice down by the pool/beach area for an afternoon treat. I would also have liked to have the option of room-service, which I understand you can get if you upgraded to the "Royal club", but it didn't bother us too much.

Rooms: as mentioned above, our room was very nice and updated. I would have liked to have more hooks or towel bars in the bathroom. As our room (and most others) do not have a balcony it's nice to have some places to hang your damp clothing to dry. There is a retractable clothes drying "rope/string" thing in the shower but more hooks for just the damp clothing and towels would be nice in the bathroom. Our bed was quite firm, which seems to be a common comment. There is a small fridge in the room with a few water bottles and beer/pop etc. We were there for a week and it seemed our fridge only got re-stocked once. The one time it got re-stocked was the one time we put a $20 peso in there as a tip. We forgot to put a tip in there again and it never got re-stocked (suprise, surprise). That was unacceptable to us and it should be addressed by management. We have paid an all-inclusive fee and we expect to have water restocked daily. We do tip the maid and people working around the resort so we are very generous that way, but we did forget about the fridge and I don't think we should have gotten excluded because there wasn't a tip in there. That is probably my only big complaint about the whole resort. Having said that, there was fresh water every-where and we brought our own insulated cups/mugs so it was never a problem and the resort is small enough it's not far to go for a drink.

All in all we had a great vacation at the Occidental NV. We would definately return to this resort and we will recommend it to friends and family. We always felt safe and secure and we really enjoyed the beach for long walks. We are looking forward to the new adult pool and the new activity centre being built. Do not hesitate to book this resort if you are looking for relaxation and quiet. Enjoy!

Right after check-in, before even getting to my room, a timeshare salesmen tried to lure you into a presentation. I wasn't expecting that, as I had been to many resorts in Puerto Vallarta before. It took me a while to figure out that he was selling timeshares, I just thought he was a really nice staff member. This is my view, should either be done off property, or on a voluntary basis. Not mobbed immediately upon arrival. That said, the beach was absolutely beautiful. Many fun activities during the day. The barbeque on the beach, all included, was amazing. The Mexican a-la-carte was to die for. Didn't get to the Italian, but I heard it was just as good. Unless we just hit a bad week, this is not the place to go for nightlife. We ended up cabbing into Puerto Vallarta or Bucerias, which can get rather expensive. Staff were overall friendly, but the bell boys at the front entrance exceeded expectations. Look for Raymundo, he will help you with anything. The other bell boys were really good also. If you are looking for a very relaxing holiday with good food, I would rate this higher for you. The three rating is mostly due to the lack of nightlife. Overall, a good holiday but probably wouldn't go back.

We chose this hotel for many reasons - but the deciding factor was the size and renovations completed. Having stayed at both mega resorts and smaller resorts, it was nice to find a resort that captured the feeling of a mega resort with great renovations on a small scale. When enjoying our day on the beach, we only had to walk a few feet to quench our thirst or have a meal. If you forgot something in your room it wasn't a ten minute walk. The beach is wide with miles to walk. Get up early in the morning and check out the fisherman. There wasn't miles of buffet offerings, but the options were delicious. Great salad fixings! One day we had calamari for lunch. Some of the best we've had! Staff was friendly, resort was clean and the free bicycles were a bonus.

We would recommend this resort in a heartbeat. Thanks to the Occidental for a great week!

Lets start out with the negative as there is hardly any. No balcony unless you are ground floor or First Club member, few balconies but how much time do you really spend in your room. No free WiFi but across the street at Paradise Village indoor Mall you get free wifi easily sitting there with no need to purchase.
This is a 20year old hotel that was renovated 2-3 years ago.
Rooms: we requested king & got it. Yes beds are firm, which we like, pillows well it would have been nice better ones but lets face it there is nothing like your pillow at home. As well taps in washroom are opposite to where we turn hot & cold on. Got a kick out of the glass wall in shower that from the bedroom you can slide your closet door & more light from the room but not to worry the glass is frosted in hte middle for privacy. Safes are free in the room.
Food: we got here late so we were at the end of the buffet for the evening & didn't expect anything great but for the rest of the week it was good & sometimes great dishes. Desserts I wish would have been bad but they were so good, my weakness. lol
Service: I was bowled over by the great service we got. The waiters were so great. There were some stairs to get from dining up to the buffet area & they would rush over to take you plate to help you along epecially for seniors or parents with kids. Richard was our main guy for breakie & lunch & missed him on our last 2 days as he was off. Funny guy. The guy who replaced him was just as nice.
Pool area: well we were shocked the first time going into the pool expecting it to be a bit cool, it is a heated pool!!!! First time we get that & we have been to a number of resorts. Especially this time of year with cooler nights it is great. Staff around were great with games etc... As well the music was not this blasting heavy base stuff others usually have on. They are in the process of building an adult pool nearby & no interruptions during our stay. Think it will an infinity pool, hope it is heated as well?? Beach Bar is open from late morning till midnight or so. Great drinks & lots of seating around.
Entertainment:we are early birds so we did not see much but did stay for the Meixcain night one & they hire young folk dancers to come in & not the staff like other hotels do. They were more professional. Lobby bar is really nice & open from 5pm on to midnight or so. One night a week they have Karaoke & heard a few & everyone is having a good time. Mid week they have a beach party for dinner buffet with a band. Not my thing but great for others, very well set up & spend all day setting up tables chairs etc.. lot of work for them. As well they are building a new stage off to the side of the hotel towards the front. Looks like it will be very nice area.
A La Carte: 2 resturants, Italien which is the most popular & is very good, Mexican which during the day is the snack, grill place next to beach bar but at night changes & very nice place as well. No need to dress up in long pants for the men for this one but smart shorts & shirt. We enjoyed this one. Great view of beach etc..
we were here 26 Jan2013/1 week.
I am hoping that in Nov I will be going back to this hotel as it is not huge but great beach, clean no rocks, great walking along the beach for as long as you want, not isolated & great service.
Just wish they would give free wifi which I hear they may???

All I can say is WOW!!!! This place was WONDERFUL!! The staff was the best of any place that we have been to. They were courteous, helpful, fun loving, and always wore a smile. We thought the food and drinks were very good, the rooms were very nice, the beach was exceptional, and the staff was outstanding. The only complaint were the time share leeches. although they didn't bother us, the couple we were with got hit every day, sometimes more than once. They really need to tone it down a bit as they do become very annoying. We told them right off the bat that we wern't interested, and they left us alone so I would recommend that you not even start a conversation with them. We will definately return to the Occidental, with no second thoughts!!!
