“Loved the Cat - but not the topless beach!”
Reviewed 4 May 2007

This place is awesome. Our only complaint was the topless beach. Topless is permitted on the beach which we didn't like, especially because we had young children with us. If they would designate a section for topless, we would definately go back.

Awesome beach - need water shoes. Great snorkeling just off beach. Food was great. Awesome location. We rented a car (highly recommend) and went to Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, and Coba (26 miles inland from Tulum - I recommend going to all these places.

Hotel is great, and good value. We've stayed at Club Maeva Tulum and at the Melia in Cabo. Club Maeva has best beach, but Catalonia has better pools and more restaurants. Overall we liked the Catalonia, especially if traveling with children.

The Riviera Maya

This was the best trip of my entire life. Which is saying a lot since I have been lucky enough to go on so many great vacations. This is my first flying trip with only friends though, so that made it extra special. R and I are fortunate enough to know the fabulous H. who invited us on her class trip to Mexico. There were around 35 of us in all so we had a great crowd wherever we went.

Make sure to visit "El Disco Tecca" at night and see a few of the shows. They are not to be taken seriously, just a great bit of fun. As others have said the food is not great but if you want to eat at the "restaurants" get your reservations in early. We were confused on where to turn them in. Just at the main eating place that is open all day, not at the actual restaurants themselves. I highly suggest the Catamarran ride to Cozumel. It was the most fun of all. I would say take motion sickness medicine, I don't ever get sick at all but was very ill after snorkeling.

Also, the water at the hotel is fine to drink from the restaurants and bars but not your room tap. Which was fine, we still bought lots of bottles of water, but you can fill them at the water jug by the bar.

The beds are every bit as hard as everyone has said but we were too tired to care. The rooms are small but what are you doing hanging out there? Anyway, the shower is fine and clean, rooms clean, and air conditioned!!! It is awesome after the heat!

We just got back from a 6 day stay at the Catalonia, Riveria Maya. We had a great time, my wife and I (left kids home this time). The restaurants had a good selection of food, our favorite was the Steak House night. The snack bar was awesome, some of the best guacamoli ever!
Other things we liked:

1) Very friendly staff, went out of there way to help.
2) Awesome Drinks! Note: See Manuel at the Tequila Bar, he deserves a raise!
3) Clean rooms
4) Great entertainment

Overall great stay! Other points of interest that we visited in the area was Playa Del Carma, neat little town. We took the ferry to Cozemel one day that was cool. We also went to Xe-La eco-water park, tubed the lazy river and snorkeled for the first time, it was Awesome. Also visited Tulum, ruins. VERY hot but worth the trip.
I would suggest the Catalonia to young, old or families with children. Very economical, clean, basic, fun resort !!!!!!

My husband and I were guests at the Catalonia from April 12-19. This was our second stay at the resort and we are already planning next years. Our room had a lovely view of the beautiful grounds that the staff works on daily. Our room was clean and we had no complaints about the beds. We had a wonderful time riding on the catamaran and I enjoyed snorkling. The buffet was good and there was always a good variety of food at the Bamoodle, near the pool area, for lunch. Our favorite resturant there was the Italian. Drinks were good and we were given excellent service around the pool by Domingo, whom also took good care of us last year. We took insulated mugs that kept the beer cold and the margaritas frozen for a long time, There is also a nice gift shop on site that carries a variety of items. There are some vendors that come in a couple of times a week with items to sell. We met many friendly vacationers from all over and had a good time with all.
We walked 10 minutes down to the Marina area in the evening and had a great meal at Richard's Quater Deck. Across from where we were seated we could watch the dolphins jumping out of the water. There were also several gift shops there for souvenier shopping.
The staff works very hard to ensure that we have a great vacation. We take a lot of one dollar bills and tip often. We had no complaints during our stay.

my family booked this vacation to thr Riviera Maya and right after we did other friends and their families decided to come along. we had a crew of about 40 people!! out of that 40, there was nearly 20 kids from ages of 10 and younger. we thought it was going to be a disaster :(

the entire crew left on April 11 and were going to departure on April 18. the flight there was awsome and went by very fast. when we arrived in Cancun, we took a bus to the hotel. it was fantastic. we booked our flight on Worry Free Vacations and the tour people were very funny and even gave away prizes!! They were very informative and told us a lot about other sites to see such as Playa Del Carmen (which was very FUN)

when we arrived to the hotel there was a sworm of people!! some of our people were able to get their room before the usual checkin. we were not and so went down to the pool and had lunch. my first reaction to the hotel was ,"WOW" i was not even able to take everything in at once! booking our vacation we did a lot of researching and were not expecting anything over the top. we all changed into our bathing suits after we ate and went into the pool. our rooms were on the Catalonia side so we stayed around there for the first day. the staff from the beginning was very nice and easy to find!

from the second day on, we went to the Yucatan side of the resort and found it to be a lot better. the A-Team was great! by time we hit our last few days we were really close with them. i think they enjoyed our huge group and they new all of our names! in the morning, they would scream, "WHERE IS MICHIGAN??!!!" i thought is was hilarious. if you go there, you have to talk with Oscar and Hilberto!! haha they are so funny. for the kids, you better get to know Sara and Deserai. they work at the day care which is on the Yucatan side. Sara was awsome, she actually took our kids for the night while we went to a local Marina for dinner. when we met sara to get the boys they were so sad to leave. oh yeah mind you our kids that we sent with them are 3 year old twins!! she was brave. my daughter was involved in many of the activities. she took Merenga lessons, did water aerobics, the Olympic games and had a great time at the disco! she also loved that there were French boys there!! i cant imagine why hahaha.

NEEDS:
*spf 30 lotion- really hot

*get up early to get chairs!! if you are going witha massive group like us, choose just 1 person to go for all. we found that if we didnt, we had too many chairs and barely used them

*bring singles to give tips, its not necessary but we did

*camara to capture the amazing scenes and your wild experience

there were not any spring breakers. my 15 year old daughter had expected there to be a lot more teens and so was a little dissapointed. it is a great place to go when you have little kids.

THINGS TO DO:

*go to playa del carmen for the night! we took a taxi not the bus that is offered

*go to the marina in the afternoon. it is in walking distance and the kids will love the maine animals. you can even ride the dolphins

*take the kids to the mini disco at 8:45!!

*at around 9:45 is the show that the A-Team put together and it is magnificent.

* at 11:00 go to the hotel's disco on the Yucatan side

*you can even take pictures with differtent exotic animals

*you can also go to CoCo Bongo!! awsome place very different from any other bar in Cancun!! you'll be very surprised

*Book restaurants on the first day (make sure a man puts in the reservation when there's a woman doing it!! they seem to give more options to men)

we were all greiving when we had to leave!! even now i miss the awsome drinks, staff, A-Team and of course the awsome weather!!! we are looking to go again next year!!
