We arrived at the Cat on 20th Jan. after a very long flight and transfer, reception staff were helpful but there was large screen TV with upgrade information and other upgrade info all over the desk, I should have heeded the warnings!! We were booked into a standard room, which we were taken to, I was horrified with what was going to be our base for the next week. The doors were badly chipped, furniture old and also marked the mirror surface was coming off. All in all not what we were expecting, very sub standard!! We went down to reception to complain and we were offered an upgrade at 30 usd per night, we accepted this and we're delighted with our premier room, this is the standard we expected. Speaking to several other guests they also had problems with standard rooms and were upgraded, I would hope that it's not some kind of ploy by the CAT to obtain more revenue!

Location: Puerto aventuras is gated place with hotels and private residences. 15-20 min of walk from the beach to the gates, where one can catch one of frequent "colectivos" - small vans driving along the coast - convenient, comfortable, cheap way to othe places at the Riviera.

The hotel is connected with another hotel from the Catalonia family, i.e. Yucatan Riviera Maya Hotel. These two hotels share the same facilities, so even if you stay at Yucatan you can use all the facilities from Catalonia hotel and vice versa. There are two restaurants for breakfast-lunch-dinner - one covered and airconditioned, one open. Several a la carte restaurants (Spanish, Mexican, Italian, Japan and a creperie) are at your disposal (no reservation, we went always around 8-9pm and could get it easily). Food in the all you can eat restaurants was nice, good choice of salads, sweets. I would prefer a bit more of meat.

Service was very nice and that I would like to stress, since this was the best about the hotel! Very easy going, nice staff, smiling, making jokes, not too tiresome though.

Beach: very good for snorkeling as a small coral reef is almost at the beach. No that good for swimming however close lagoon is ideal for that as it it blocked from the open sea and thus there are no waves.

Sun beds - we could always get some despite not reserving then with our towels at 6 am (some people really cannot sleep :-)

Rooms: we have a standard room, basic, clean, two queen size beds, quite big bathroom. Refurbishment would be recommended as some furniture was pretty old.

Other facilities: spa (was not there), gym (small but rather good equipped)

Flew from Toronto to Catalonia Yucatan on Jan.17., our room we had upgraded to privilege ,which i was very please and well worthed the extra $. The room was just great ,comfy king bed, lovely washroom with a great shower head and window, well ventilated. The room was spacious and had a great decor. the fridge was stocked daily . The workers were constantly painting and tiding the grounds. The overall resort was super clean and well maintained, and the staff were always happy and courteous! Great management!!!!
The food was fantastic. The paella, the beans the BBQ shrimp to name a few,was just amazing!! We had 2 buffets, and the food was excellent, tables always changed after each guests, great food presentation and fast ,smiling, happy staff. The a La carte restaurants ,I did not like so much, I was very disappointed with the Mexican restaurant, and the BBQ steakhouse...... - we try it all and went back to the buffet.
I'm very pick and fussy, and very attentive to details and I'm happy to say it exceedingly pass my stands!!!
The beach ,very rocky, (bring water shoes) hard to go in and out, even for the younger.
The overall was great and I like Catalonia so much that I'm going to LaRomana in April to Catalonia Gran Domenico's! can't wait the beach is fantastic and the CAT, I know will be great again:)))
Congrats to the Chefs and to Management for running so smoothly and for having happy staff!!

We stayed here in Sept for our 10 yr anniversary and it was amazing. I did call the week before and ask to be upgraded to the honeymoon package which is totally worth it. We got an upgraded room, champagne and choc dipped strawberries, choice of pillow, a couples massage (holy cow, so nice) and a special dinner. I think it was $200 total for the upgrade but well worth the extra money.
The beach was incredible and we went snorkeling everyday. We even saw a jelly fish. Ü I also got to swim with the dolphins!! Holy cow so amazing!!! I would recommend anyone doing this! But not at the dolphin place the is close to the hotel but to Dolphina I think it was. Just a little bit more money but well worth it for the experience you get there. We did walk to the other dolphin place and it just wasn't the same atmosphere.
The food was really good. We tried every restaurant and I liked the Japanese one best. The bartenders are really nice and if you tip them even a little bit they keep the drinks coming.
Overall this place was great. Would totally go back.

Room Tip: upgrade! It's worth it.
