2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2011

Found the pub on the "I know Devon" website & booked a 3 night weekend stay at the last minute. Normally I reveiw thoroughly, any place we plan to visit - this time I only managed a quick look at the pub website - the photos seemed fine so off we went.
The pub describes itself as "child & dog friendly" - there were so many dogs, it appeared almost obligatory to take one, some people had 2.
Our room was small but clean. uncomfortable bed, wafer thin pillows( we asked for 2 more) & the shower was a trickle, very hard to get wet.
Food - breakfast was delicious & our first evening meal (fillet of cod & gammon) excellent.
We had planned to spend our days touring the area, returning for a pleasant evening meal & a few drinks, however on Saturday evening at 7.45pm there was little choice left on the menu and, after waitng 45 mins we complained. We were told that most of the food had gone at lunchtime & there was a shotage of chefs ??
My husband managed a ribeye, I had pea soup & a side order of chips!
On Sunday after a day out, during which we enjoyed a carvery elsewhere, we returned, hoping for a light snack around 8 or 9pm. We asked for a sandwich or baguette etc - no chance! They suggested a starter from the "specials board" - have to say that the items on the board on Frid renained unchanged on Sun, apart from those which had been removed.
Pretty disgusted, we drove to a caravan site a mile away & got a snack from their shop - which says it all.
We are an easygoing couple with simple needs, not given to complaining & relatively small appetites, I have left a lot unsaid, please read between the lines & don't stay here.
One last point, we don't take a laptop on holiday but there is no Wifi & no mobile signals in the village or surrounding area.

Room Tip: Take 2 dogs

Rooms were generally good, however, despite the toilets having been cleaned, in one of the toilet had been used and there was faeces that had to be flushed away.

The evening meals were fairly expensive. Two of us ordered a starter of fresh salmon on a bed of salad and toasted bloomer. The toasted bloomer was not on the plate, and when mentioned to the waitress, she eventually brought some toast for just one of the diners.
The cheese platter, however, was excellent.

Nice bar area with plenty of outside tables.

Room Tip: Situated in a pleasant village.

Arrived as part of a large group of friends. Very welcoming staff. First meal was a bit ropey but we soon learnt that it was the chefs first day. Subsequent meals dramatically improved and the last was absolutely superb.
Our room was very comfortable and spacious.

I found this hotel/pub at exactly the right moment. I was in urgent need to stop cycling and find a comfy room & meal for the night. I was on the first leg of my route heading towards Southampton from Holbeton (Ivybridge) OFF the main roads! Staff were helpful and welcoming, helped me park my bike securely and under cover. Food was served quickly and piping hot, no frills but value for money. Friendly atmosphere, clean and bright room. Finding them made my day!
