Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is an exceptional vacation value

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Aug 2024
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos absolutely exceeded our expectations during our recent celebration there of our fortieth wedding anniversary. The guest service rendered by the resort's staff as well as the cuisine at all of the resort's restaurants, the guest rooms and facilities, the amenities and overall resort cleanliness were all totally exceptional. We have been frequent vacationers throughout Mexico since 1990 and can authoritatively state that Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is an outstanding resort which we will definitely visit again.

Booked our vacation 3 months before our arrival. About 2-3 weeks before our trip received an email stating the hotel is undergoing renovations and that kids play area, kids pool and 2 restaurant would be closed. Of course being middle of summer, could not find any other place to book a room for our family of 5. Im pretty sure at the time of my booking they had already planned to undergo renovations. I doubt major renovations decisions are made 2 weeks before they start. As it turns out, they werent just renovating the kids area, pool and 2 restaurant. They shut down an entire wing (building 2, 7 floors) and part of building 1, 5 floors. Construction going on throughout the day. I just think its dishonest. Why not just shut down the hotel and do the reno? Or at least be honest about it so if people do decide to come, they have the expectation and know what they re getting into. We rented a 2bd grand master suite ocean front. I feel so ripped off. But i learned my lesson. I would stay away from Hyatt Ziva Cabos, at least until u know for sure they are done with the reno. The only good thing about our trip was the staff at the kids club, melissa and kit kat. They love kids and took great care of our kids while we were there, even as water was leaking from the ceiling of their temporary kids club room. Smh.

The food was good other than at the wedding. Even the room service was good. There isn't much to do at the resort unless you spend extra for excursions. There are no shaded areas in the pool while the sun beams down on you all day. The drinks are watered down. 6 shots in a row had absolutely no effect. The beach is not safe to swim at because of the rough waves.
All the staff are extremely nice. We tipped them well because they deserved it.
The top floor rooms are very nice and spacious.
It is close to the airport and downtown which is very helpful.

Everything was going fine until the night before checkout. A little backstory. Our first night there, we went to eat at Hacienda Baja Grill, the steakhouse, but was turned away because my husband had on open toe shoe. We were told by the host and Manager Oscar Munoz the dress code for men was no open toe shoes, flip flops, sandals, beachwear or tank tops. My husband explained to him that those were the only shoes he packed, besides water shoes. Oscar said there was nothing he could do because there is a dress code and he has to enforce it. We respected their dress code and decided to have dinner at another restaurant. While getting into the elevator by the Steakhouse my husband noticed a white male in flip flops being served in the steakhouse. We did not make a fuss and continued with our new plans to eat at another restaurant.
My husband went to a local store and purchased some sneakers to wear to the Steakhouse for dinner, again no big deal.
Now to the night before check out…. I was in the pool talking to my neighbors and one said she was turned away because she had on a bikini top with a coverup. Again, no big deal because we respect their dress code.
When we went to dinner (the night before check out) we noticed that there were several less melanated people in the Steakhouse with flip flops, tank tops and open toe shoes so I asked to speak to the manager. While waiting on the manager, a gentleman told me that he was told the same thing regarding their dress code and was turned away. He proceeded to say he noticed that less melanated were allowed in even though they had on items on the NO list. I waited a while for on the manager, Oscar, who never came so I asked the Host to seat us and let him know where we’ve been seated. Again he never came to speak with me so I stopped him in passing. I reminded him of the situation when he turned my family away for dress code on Saturday (the day we arrived) but tonight the Steakhouse were full on families that were out of dress code. He told me that on Saturday his Manager told him to allow people in although they are out of dress code. At this point, the entire situation is concerning to me because Saturday was the night he turned us away and Sunday was the night he turned my neighbors away. People use the R word (racist/racism) so loosely now and I hate to say it. What I will say is I spoke to 2 other random melanated people about the Steakhouse and we all had the same story and witnessed the same thing.

The location is beautiful. The service and staff are exceptional, warm, and welcoming. The food and various activities are great.

It’s hard to review fairly, as this hotel is great, however, several of the key features posted on the website were inaccessible.

Namely the kids club and the kids aquatic features/pool park. This was a major disappointment, especially after paying full price.

Further, there is loud construction all day the rings over the pools that the kids are allowed to actually play in. Our youngest had a hard time with the noise and only wanted to go out when the jack hammering stopped (at dusk).

So it’s hard to review this location fairly. It’s certainly not fair to give it a 1 star even though it felt like a bait and switch, we had an excellent time.

Given the quality of staff this place is capable of 5 stars when not under construction.

We all had a really great time and enjoyed the stay.

Also maybe worth noting minor room age, door wouldn’t shut all the way in one bathroom, scale out of batteries etc. Not stuff that bothered us. Rooms very clean and service was great.
