“loved Cabo - hated villa del palmar”
Reviewed 15 June 2012

My husband and I flew to Mexico for our honeymoon and when we arrived at Villa del Palmar we were tired and hungry. We left almost immediately after our wedding and were running on about two hours of sleep, coming from Indiana. We arrived a couple hours before check-in and were still given our room keys by 'Sandra'. We went up to our room and it was a mess. There was trash everywhere and the bed was all messed up. We went downstairs and told them and they acted like it was our fault because we "checked in too early". It would have been perfectly okay if the room wasn't ready and they would have just let us know instead of having us run around and causing us stress on a trip that was supposed to do the opposite. After she continues to say it's our fault she tells us we can go to the hospitality suite and have lunch. We go to this place and ask for lunch and another women looked at me like I was crazy and said they never serve lunch. Eventually we got a different room. There was a sports bar at the very bottom level of the hotel and even though we were on the 8th floor we could hear them every night yelling/cheering/screaming. We were told we didn't have to go to the timeshare presentation because we're not even old enough to purchase it. A couple of the staff members just kept pressuring us to go and they wouldn't listen to what we wanted. The package that we had was considered all inclusive but it wasn't truly all inclusive. We were limited to what we could drink at the bar and only had two places to have dinner. This vacation was purchased for us by my mother and I am very grateful but it was the honeymoon from hell. I loved Cabo San Lucas and would definitely go back again (the weather was perfect) but I will NEVER stay with the villa group ever again.

Room Tip: go to a different resort!

After reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor, we were very apprehensive about this trip to Cabo San Lucas and our stay at Villa Del Palmar time share. We were pleasantly surprised! My husband and I invited some good friends to travel with us and even arranged for them to have their own one bedroom suite when we learned that a two bedroom was not available. No question the resort is 20 years old, but it has been well maintained and we found everything clean and in order. The staff was always pleasant and courteous. Our view of the beach and sunrise was incredible. We worried that because we are early to bed folks that it might be noisy. On the contrary, by 10 pm things quieted down and remained that way. One of the highlights was an extraordinary dinner at the La Casona restaurant on site. We rented a car and took some side trips to Todos Santos, had Margaritas at the "Hotel California" and then truly delicious chili rellenos at a local restaurant. Another day we headed to Santiago and found Sol de Mayo, an ecological farm and oasis in these sand swept mountains. Of course we had to visit Cabo Wabo.....but only for lunch! (and a cold Corona)! All in all we enjoyed our trip very much.

Have stayed at the Villa del Palmar several times. The staff is always friendly and courteous. It's nice to be recognized on return visits. The room was clean and linens fresh and the menus have been updated and the food was very good, but can be pricey - my only complaint would be inadequate lighting over the sink in the bathroom. As a woman, I prefer a brighter light when getting ready in front of the mirror. This is a resort and there can be a lot of activity going on, however the proximity to town is convenient. It's probably a 20 minute walk to town, which can be awfully long and hot during the afternoon, but not so bad in early evening. The taxi ride is about 2-3 minutes and costs about $7.00 USD each way. Rent a car, we always seem to find great deals - and the parking is free at VDP. ......BTW, if you can handle a timeshare presentation, there are incredible deals to be had at this resort......

Room Tip: Make sure to request an ocean front view, as a lot of rooms face the desert or only have a partial o...

This is a very nice resort and we had no complaints. The only reason it doesn't get a 5 star rating from me is that the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach is definitely a 5 star and Villa is not quite as nice. So, 4.5 starts would be more accurate.

Definitely get the AI unless you plan on cooking or dining out for most of your trip. Breakfast was approx $18 pp and dinners were approx $48 pp before alcohol or tips so it's not cheap to dine there. Food was good to great and choices were plentiful. They have a great brick pizza oven and we definitely took advantage of that. The Italian restaurant was pretty good. Part of the AI is that you can go to their sister resort Del Arco and dine there. We had excellent meals at La Perla and the sushi restaurant there...I wouldn't say it was the best sushi in the world but it was a nice change.

The resort gets quiet at about 11pm so if you are party people, you have to leave the resort. Dinner time is noisy all over the resort so be warned as they offer nightly entertainment with the buffet.

We were part of a party of 11 and one of our group had a ground floor room which was awesome....just steps away from the pools and bar so that can be requested. The rooms were neat and clean with very comfortable beds and furnishings were newish. We had excellent service and no issues with charges and billing. We did tip even with the AI so I don't know what it would be like otherwise.

ALSO - We were offered the Villa Signature VIP service for $200 per room and 2 of the 6 rooms in our party did take advantage of it. The VIP concierge did take very good care of our group arranging reservations poolside, providing complimentary snacks every day, cleaning sunglasses, etc. so I think it was potentially worth it. They got a beautiful beach bag and amenities in their rooms.

Pools and activities were great and we met a ton of owners and non-owners that were super friendly and fun. Everyone seemed very relaxed and happy. The weather was gorgeous this time of year as well, between 80-95 and sunny everyday with low humidity and then cool at night in the mid to high 60's.

We would definitely recommend this resort and I would stay there again in a heartbeat except we bought at PB and will stay there on our return.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor if you want the convenience of being right by the pools/bar.
