“Monte Christo Estates Showing Its Age Early”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2012

Don't know if the amenities at Monte Christo were cheap to start with , or the parent company Pueblo Bonito, isn't taking the time and money to maintain the property. During a two week stay in July, had four power outages. the shortest of which was three hours. Five issues with items that quit working(some associated with the power outage). The fastest service response time was four hours, for a safe that quit operating (technician couldn't fix it, luckly it started operating on its own an hour later), and 10 hours to fix a TV that wouldnt stay on. A bathroom sink that has a stopper that doesn't operate , and a wireless router that I'm on a waiting list for (I dont believe they actually have any) are 12 days ongoing. The employees are usually quite nice, but it is obvious they do not enjoy lying to guests as im sure they are instructed. The Resort will gladly allow you to connect to the advertised wifi for 10 dollars US per hour. The Villas initially had a stereo for the owners and guests use. These have mysteriously disappeared. When one inquires about the stereo you are only given a blank stare.Housekeeping is the only gold star awarded for this trip.

Room Tip: All of the Villas advertise ~sleeps 10~ ,would recommend no more than 6 , unless you are in college...

The Montecristo has the most amazing ambiance of any hotel we've ever been in. The view, the decks, the pool, it was all amazing, especially with the juxtaposition of the pool. The room was very comfortbale, and all in all I'd definitely recommend it for those wanting to get away and enjoy Cabo.

Without a doubt this is the nicest place we have ever stayed. We had a villa in the top row of mountain and the panoramic view from our pool, rooms, and decks were amazing. You can float at the edge of your infinity pool and just soak in the views of the crashing surf, the miles of beach, the hills and lighthouse, the other villas and Pueblo Bonita Sunset and Pacifica that spread out below you. The location and view are spectacular and stand out as the main attractions of the Montecristo.

Other positives include the huge amount of space you have in the villa. There are three large bedrooms, four bathrooms (one attached to each room and an extra upstairs), a decent sized kitchen, a gas grill that we definitely took advantage of, two open living areas (one upstairs and one downstairs). I know a previous review said something about a lack of seating, but we did not find that to be a problem. Every room in the house seemed to have an amazing view of the ocean. It was also great to come back to your place and have the privacy of your own pool and jacuzzi to relax in. We did shuttle down to Sunset Beach to swim and play in the large pool there and had a great time.

Each villa is assigned a personal concierge and a maid. Our maid Letitia was excellent. She worked harder than we wanted to going as far as cleaning the grill and folding a load of laundry that we had left in while we were down at the ocean. The personal concierge (Edgar) was not that helpful, but the front desk members helped make the occasional reservation that we couldn't do ourselves.

There are two slight drawbacks to the location. One is the unswimmable ocean on the Pacific side. While we were there the waves were impressive 10-12 foot ripcurls that pounded the sand like thunder. It was fun to look at though. The other is the consistency of the sand at the beach. The grains on both Medano Beach and here are huge and coarse. It is not really comfortable to walk on. Again it wouldn't keep us from coming back, but it is good to know ahead of time to set your expectations.

A few other notes to fit in (i feel like I could write a couple of chapters on our stay here):
*food poolside is reasonable and tasty compared to many resorts we have stayed
*shuttles down to Sunset took about 10 minutes on average once a call was made
*Your concierge will reserve tickets on the shuttle to Medano Beach for you
*The average taxi into town is around $3 dollars a person (a couple took less)
*your personal pool is cooler than the resort pools (I loved that fact...my wife didn't)
*the workout room has an amazing view of the ocean also which helps on the treadmill

All in all it was a one-of-a-kind experience that combined the spaciousness of renting a vacation home with the amenities of staying onsite at a resort. I would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Phase 1 villas are higher up the mountain and seem to have the best views.

We stayed in Montecristo Villa #60 and it was beautiful! We loved the amazing view, both decks and of course, the infinity pool! Our beds were comfortable and everything was very clean. We were a group of 6 and all self-proclaimed gourmet chefs and we found the kitchen to be very convenient and easy to work in. We learned how the oven worked after taking 3 hours to cook a Tequila cake – which, by the way, turned out to be unbelievably delicious! We were on a 2-week vacation in Cabo, so we loved having the convenience of the washer and dryer. The refrigerator could have been a little bigger and the minor kitchen faucet problems were fixed quickly.

There were a few things that we didn’t like about our Montecristo Villa:

1. We were a group of 6 adults and we could not gather comfortably – all together – in one place except at the dinner table! The living room was rather small and with only 1 couch and 3 chairs, seating was rather inadequate, which we mentioned to the Concierge. The upper deck had only 4 chairs at the table and 2 lounge chairs. On the lower deck, we had 3 lounge chairs and 2 straight back chairs. Again, we were unable to gather comfortably.

2. Towels on the lounge chairs seemed to be in short supply and were not changed daily.

3. Bath towels should have been replaced with a minimum of 2 towels to each bathroom daily. (Extra towels were available in the linen closet.)

4. Wash cloths were also in short supply, as were the small containers of shampoo and lotion.

5. We were warned before we arrived that there might not be an Internet router available for us upon check–in. Well, of course, none was available! However, we were prepared and brought our own so we could stay in communication with our families and business matters. Even though we had a 9:00 AM “appointment” with the IT guys to assist in the router set-up, we had to call a few times to get the IT guys to show up. They knew exactly how to complete the set-up and we were off and running. I’d definitely suggest this idea, but I can’t understand why Montecristo doesn’t have a router in every Villa!!

There were a few things that we didn’t like about Montecristo, in general:

1. It was windy every single day! So windy (and rather cool) that we couldn’t sit out on the decks! We all laughed as the wind would howl thru the closed and locked sliding glass doors! No one told us about this – if they had, we wouldn’t have booked at Montecristo!

2. Transportation really sucks! Getting to the pools at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica was complicated: First, you had to call from the Villa for a shuttle to pick you up and take you to Pueblo Bonito Sunset. Then, you had to wait at PB Sunset for the shuttle to pick you up and drive you to PB Pacifica. Several times, we just walked all the way from our Villa to PB Pacifica, but it was downhill, so not too bad! A couple of times, we tipped the driver who picked us up at PB Pacifica to drive us non-stop back to the Villa. (I hope they didn’t get in trouble!)

3. To get to Pueblo Bonito Rose is even more complicated! First, you must call a day in advance the Concierge for a timed “reservation” on the shuttle from PB Sunset to PB Rose. (Several shuttles were already fully booked when we called!) Then you gotta call from the Villa for a shuttle to take you down to PB Sunset, which must be perfectly timed to catch the PB Rose shuttle, which usually means you arrive 20 minutes early and sit at PB Sunset and wait, and wait, and wait. Not my idea of the best way to spend my vacation time!

4. The cost of Taxi service in Cabo is outrageous! It’s $15 ONE WAY for the taxi from Montecristo to downtown Cabo, Costco, Sam’s Club & Walmart. $30 roundtrip is ridiculous! Too expensive to go downtown for shopping or dinner. And don’t even think about getting off the shuttle to PB Rose – they will NOT stop to let you off in the downtown area! It’s well known that the taxi union has a stranglehold on the hotels, but if this doesn’t improve, we will probably stop coming to Cabo.

We enjoyed two restaurants and would recommend them: The Bistro at PB Sunset and Siempre at PB Pacifica, where we ate twice! (Strange thing though, reservations are on-the-hour only!)

Overall, we were disappointed with the time we spent at Montecristo and will not return. We will, however, continue to vacation at Playa Grande in Cabo San Lucas, which has spectacular views, beautiful pools and we can walk downtown for shopping and dinner without the taxis ripping us off!

We stayed there from April 16 to April 23 2012.

We got Villa 119, one of the Phase II villas, in the lower area. The good part is that you’re near the Sunset Beach Resort, but the view is not as impressive as the villas that are higher up. We loved it anyways, seeing the whales in the ocean from our infinity pool was fantastic!
We were very impressed with the villa; as most other reviewers have already mentioned, everything is top notch. Needless to say my husband was very happy to have that Weber BBQ for his grilling! The villa is very spacious, which gave a lot of privacy to everyone in the party. We were a little concerned at first about travelling with little kids (who weren’t ours) but it was fine: we had the master bedroom upstairs and the kids and their parents had the bedrooms downstairs: we never heard the babies cry at night, it was a great vacation for everyone. They say the villa sleeps 8 to 10 people. For better privacy I would say it sleeps 6 adults maximum plus kids, but I wouldn’t stay there with 10 adults. We were 4 adults and 2 kids and that was perfect.
We had several meals at the villa, stocked up on groceries at the local Walmart and enjoyed the fabulous kitchen. We ordered room service a couple times: I have to say, that was a bit of a disappointment, I guess the kitchens are far which makes it hard to bring the food quickly, but I didn’t really enjoy the room service food as it was cold. But let’s not focus on that, I forgot about it a few seconds later. Celestino our concierge came everyday, he was very helpful and made some dinner reservations for us on several occasions.
There is a computer with internet in the villa, but the wifi isn’t included and the weekly fee is pretty steep.
Overall we absolutely loved the Monte Cristo and will definitely stay there again when we go back to Cabo.

Room Tip: Phase 1 villas have better views, phase 2 villas are larger, have more pirvacy and are closer to the...
