“WOW!”
Reviewed 29 June 2012

There are SO many wonderful things to say about this property; I really don't know where to begin. Its location certainly can't be beat. The property is right on the beach and features stunning ocean views, yet it's walking distance to all the "action" of Playa. Each of the units has it's own "feel"--- all fully equipped with all the comforts of home. El Taj delivers 5 star service in a unique, upscale sort of "barefoot elegance" environment. Everything from it's originally thought out decor to its breathtaking views and top notch service make this one of my favorite properties in Playa. An idea spot for a family or large group. Simply perfect!

Dear klr32874,

Thank you very much for such a spectacular review. It makes us especially proud of all the hard work we do every day when we hear so many good things about ourselves.
You are spot on about the location – we try to always tell our prospective guests that it would be hard to beat it in Playa, since we are right on the beach and just steps away from all the 5th Avenue action with outdoor restaurants, bars and clubs.
I love with your description of “barefoot elegance.” I myself was in charge of our design team that shipped most of our décor materials directly from Bali to create the laid back beach feel combined with upscale elegance, complete comfort and Mexican Caribbean architecture.
Please come back soon!

Great place to stay to get away and relax. Excellent condo interior, great bathroom, 2 TVs, excellent air conditioning and comfortable bed. Only negative on the room is that the location is close to the beach bars which means light sleepers will hear the bass from the clubs until 4am - bring ear-plugs or stay out late each night.

Awesome pool and spa, everyone walking past the complex on the beach stops in awe when they see the pool. Great beach bar and comfortable lounges, super cheap drinks and friendly staff. The location is so close to 5th ave and all the restaurants and bars that you have everything you need within walking distance and with the prices so cheap for quality food, there is no reason to book an all-inclusive resort.

Really impressed with the staff, Ivette and Rick in the office were always very helpful as was the concierge. The Gym located 2 blocks away was great also.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a relaxing/romantic getaway with the freedom to do as you want without the limitations of a resort.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the Oceanfront complex not the Beachfront and non ground-floor if possible

Dear Dean,

I would like to sincerely thank you for such a detailed review and for taking your time to write it.

You are very right when you compare El Taj to all inclusive resorts, because being in the center of Playa del Carmen, our charming internationally-Mexican beach town, allows our guests to actually experience Mexico without the constraints of being in a resort far away from any town. Fifth Avenue is on the next block, and this gives all of our guests a very easy access to multitude of outdoor restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs. I hope you had a chance to try our brand new elegant restaurant Imprevist!

However, speaking about the location, it’s inevitable that some sounds from the clubs sometimes reach our property. After having heard such comments as yours from our guests, we decided to respond, and at this moment we’re installing triple-insulated soundproof windows in El Taj units that were in any way affected by outside noise. The windows also come with shutters that provide further sound insulation and a complete blackout if it’s desired. We want to demonstrate our fierce commitment to provide 5-star services and out ultimate desire to make our guests happy in any way possible. The installation of windows should be completed the next few weeks.

We are looking forward to your return!

Where do i begin. El taj has two properties, beachside completed first and ocean front, the newest of the properties. One thing I notice every property in condo hotels has its own unique charm so its fun to bounce around to different units and properties for a few days each as they are all in close proximity to each other. You will find you favorite units to your personal taste this way and always want to come back again and again. The first unit I ever rented (porto playa) i loved but since then they keep getting better and better with each new find and visit. This instance I was staying at the largest most luxurious unit in entire complex and by far the most unique. (El taj Beachside, unit 302) I have stayed in many units but this one was customized for the owner/developer originally so it has a few extra bells and whistles to say the least. It is perfect for groups of friends or families, as its the biggest unit within all the condo hotels properties and the largest at el taj (4br 5 bath, 4 level). Entering the unit you walk by an exotic black infinity pool, over a little bridge above koi and sunning turtles, up a little walkway to magnificent oversized doors imported from a far off land. Open those amazing doors and your journey of this 4 level unit begins. You enter into a super spacious open area, Tv lounge area and your open kitchen. Also a great terrace overlooking the pool with large table. Great way to start off your day to the sounds of the waterfalls during breakfast. On this level is also a bedroom with two beds, and a plasma. There are probably 5 flat screen Tvs in this unit. (every bedroom has one including the little exotic bungalow loft) There is also a bathroom on this level with shower. Each bathroom is unique, and unlike others in the unit. These are also unique to even the other units at el taj or any of the properties. I do not believe this unit was ever intended to be rented out. One on the third level even has a steam shower. (nice touch is a window right inside the shower it if you get too hot! lol) Each bathroom has unique tile or stone work, some have body sprays as well as dual shower heads. The craftsmanship of these unparalleled in all of playa. Keep in mind this was built for the owner/developer so no expense as spared anywhere and his unique taste was utilized which sets this unit apart in that way from ALL others. Much of the furniture from bali etc. You have a huge custom kitchen with all the best, Large fridge, top of line gas stove, kitchen fully equipped with anything and everythign you would need. (5 gallon purified water cooler) If your taking a friend whose a good cook or chef with you this is the unit to rent with a kitchen that would make even Emeril proud. They even offer a private chef service if needed.

For me the highlight of these properties are the signature roofdecks. This one has a VERY large hot tub (once again unique to this room, other rooms are round hot tubs this a large over sized square one), shower, amazing fully equipped grill area, sitting area with couch. Above this 3rd level roofdeck, a 4th level sundeck offering incredible views of the Caribbean sea and all of Playa. You can even get a massage on that deck, (a nice touch in the early morning or early evening with only a small additional fee for in room service - the unit even has its own massage table) The views are partially blocked by el taj ocean front but you have partial ocean views off to the right and left from your 3d and 4th levels. The fourth floor (bungalow loft) incorporates a bedroom with a exotic Tahitian style palapa roof. It also has it's own private bathroom. Staying at EL Taj Beachside you also get use of the other pool at el taj ocean front just a few steps across the street. Two tier pool looking down over the sea & indigo beach club. Three in pool lounger seats on top tier equipped with jets, a nice touch after the beach while enjoying a happy hour drink.

Walk everywhere and anywhere at El taj as it is located in the liveliest part of Playa close to restaurants, nightlife and shopping. If anything El Taj location is too prime as its near some nightclubs which can be loud on weekends. In 302 the music you barely hear if at all in 2 of the rooms, the 2 others you do here some bass on weekends so you can stick the heavier sleepers in those ;). They even give you earplugs if needed. If your a light sleeper I suggest finding the right unit or staying at porto playa another amazing property in condohotels and one of my favorites. Porto was the first I landed at when playa was a very different place many years ago. The taxi driver could not even find it as it was new! Well thats all changed i assure you as this is now a premier area and well known. The key to this of this particular unit 302 though is its size, A+ decor and amenities, use of two great pool areas on both sides, and its for a group who likes being near all the action and buzz. Location location location.

Cleanliness, Excellent staff and excellent maid service daily. Had to mention this and it all stems from the top. During my stay i noticed a staff meeting the developer was running. He basically saw a cigarette butt and noted to the staff i should NEVER EVER see this. My point being the pride taken in every aspect of this condohotel is second to none whether from big things like the design or the finest details like this. It is super clean and everything is watched over carefully. (full time security too) Everyone is terrific from the general staff, to the daily maid staff (Lourdes is great and is always helpful with your booking and finding that just right room). The developer Jack is on site and lives in playa and is always looking to improve every aspect of these unique properties and it shows with each additional visit. He was even able to suggest an Italian restaurant for a special occasion for friends and family (Da Gigi) and we went back a few times (my father who is 100% Italian insisted as it was his favorite! lol ) Things get better and better each year ive noticed and then seeing the final piece of the puzzle (el taj ocean front and indigo beach club) come together and blossom over the years as the grand finale, an amazing final property to compliment EL taj beachside.

Another great time in Playa thanks to ALL of the folks at condo hotels and EL Taj.
A+ . -G in NY

This hotel is simply the best. We have stayed in Mexico over 30 times, but never in Playa. I spoke with Lourdes( the reservation manager) prior to my arrival and told her that my family and I were looking for a place with Ritz Carlton level service in Playa. We were not disappointed. My 2 year old got sick on the plane and Lourdes even took us to her pediatrician ( who was excellent). The baby was fine soon after. All I can say is that I have been fortunate enough to stay at the best hotels in the world and this was as good as any of them. Playa is not St. Bart's . But, of you love Playa( like we do), the El Taj is the best in every way . Each and every employee was top notch . There are too many to mention from the front desk, to the restaurant , to the beach. I can't say enough good things about Lourdes and the property. We stayed 11 nights ( 3 nights at there other property Casa Maya). Casa Maya was also great and cheaper if you're on a budget but want the amenities of El Taj. We will never stay anywhere other than these 2 places . Also, we stayed in room 457( 2 bedroom penthouse ) and never heard any noise at night . This is on the ocean front side. We are already planning our next trip back. Ed Paskin

Stayed here a week in unit 344. Researched it heavily and the unit was the best combination of location, price, quiet and amenities. Facilities are excellent and well maintained. Staff is friendly and helpful. BUT a few small niggles could have been avoided and would have make it perfect. The beach bar and restaurant is separately owned by Indigo. When you check in they give you the "rules" which says any towels and belongings left on a beach chair for over 90 minutes will be removed by the staff. Great - it stops the chair-hogs that like to throw a towel on their favorite chair in the morning and then don't show up until the afternoon. But the unofficial policy is - if you throw some money at the staff they will "save" chairs for you. This really ticked us off. We were tipping the staff for good service but not to break the rules. On the weekends the Indigo bar cranks up the volume to such a level that my wife couldn't hear her music on her headphones.... Complaints we greeted with a shrug of the shoulders.

Also kind of odd that the concierge is located a block away???? We wanted a trip to Chichen Itza but the concierge wanted to charge more than the tour company advertised for on the web. After complaining they reduced the price but it shouldn't be that way.

So, I would go again and the unit was terrific but they need to change some things to make it perfect.

Oh, and one final thing. None of the advertisements show the thick mat of seaweed that washes up every day and the fishing boats moored just off the beach. There are folks cleaning up the seaweed almost every day but it was not a pristine beach by any measure and the ropes which the boats moor to are ugly and annoying if you want to swim in the sea. Some of the fishing boats also like to turn their music up to distorted levels while they a cleaning their boats. Not very pleasant.

Dear Terry,

I would like to thank you for your review and for your constructive criticism. We are here to listen to comments of our guests, and to make sure everybody is hundred percent satisfied and happy.

Let’s start from Indigo. As you have correctly noted, Indigo Beach Club is affiliated with Condo Hotels, but owned separately, so we do not work directly with their staff, but I will address the beach towel and tipping issue myself. As for the music, the beach club does get livelier on weekends, but we do attract a more mature, upscale crowd that wants to relax on the beach with some beach-style music playing in the background, so I do apologize if it was not as quiet as you might have expected. We are located in the downtown area of Playa del Carmen, and this means we will entertain and offer a beach club atmosphere, which is, however, one of the most upscale in Playa del Carmen.

Now let’s move to the seaweed/ boat issue. Seaweed is a natural part of the beach, and it’s washed up to the everywhere. Sometimes when the water is calm there is no seaweed and when the sea is more turbulent during certain periods of the year we get more. That’s why we have beach workers cleaning it whenever necessary. We also do not hide the fact that mother nature is at work in any of our advertising. That is why we are the only hotel with a live beach web cam pointed directly at the beach so that everyone can see the actual setting live 24 /7. You can see our live beach cam on our web site. Regarding the little fishing boats that are in front of El Taj, we would like our guests to understand that Playa has been a fishing village since many years ago, and the original fishermen still are keeping their livelihood by doing what their grandparents have been doing – fishing. We actually like the way their fishing boats add some charm to our beach, and removing them would cause the fishermen to lose their original means of survival. If you just walked a few feet on the beach, you could swim in completely unobstructed Caribbean water.

Once again, thank you very much for offering your comments.

Please come back soon!
