I was there with my husband on May 2011 for four nights and the place is awesome. The hotel is really beautiful, it is large, but there are bicycles, so you can use them to go from your room to the beach, or to a restaurant and just leave them there, there is also a shuttle that takes you from one place to another in the hotel. The rooms are very nice and clean, with slippers and bathrobe and a huge nice bathroom. The food is really good and what to say about the service, excellent. There's a very nice swimming pool next to the laguna which is only for adults, where you can relax. Just wonderful, will come again for sure!

My wife and I celebrated our annivesary at the Faimont Mayakoba last month.
This was our fourth visit and it was wonderful. The staff went out of their way to help us celibrate. Everything from flowers in our room to special desserts. I must mention the tremendous service we received from Frida and Wilbert in the Laguna Restaurant they were the like extended family.
We had a fantastic visit and will return again. Must note that it always takes an hour or so to check to our room, this is a bit annoying. I hope management can remedy this issue.

Room Tip: enjoy the on property dining --it's awesome

Spent eleven wonderful days at the Fairmont Mayakoba and simply fell in love with the resort from the moment we entered the beautiful lobby...the service throughout our stay was extraordinary and the grounds of the resort are impecable...the main pool area was a wonderful place to spend the day or a short golf cart ride to the infinity pool and beach area was another great option...we travelled with our 5mnth young son and we were very impressed with the resort overall...

As with all Fairmonts I have visited (this being my tenth) I find the food is overpriced and not always satisfactory...the breakfast buffet was excellent ($25 U.S. per person)...some of our meals were quite good and others just ok...I do expect excellence considering the price charged...the drinks can be expensive as well ($10 U.S. for a one ounce relatively small Margarita) so budget accordingly...one good option is to stop off on the way to the resort and pick up some Tequila to top off your drinks and a case of cold beer to put in the fridge...this was recommended by the staff when we arrived and we appreciated the ability to drink our own supply...

I also don't necessarily agree with the $15 per person "Resort Fee" which covers your daily housekeeping tips and the golf cart drivers...if you're going to build a resort on 400 acres and a thirty minute walk from the beach then you should offer the golf carts "gratis" and let me look after the housekeeping tips...

Overall, a wonderful resort...and a sanctuary away from home...

Now that the Mandarin Oriental is closed, the Fairmont is an excellent choice to an upscale hotel in Playa del Carmen. Yes it may be expensive, but the place really worth the visit. Excellent attention and service. Different types of rooms, if possible, try to book the ones besides the canals, after all no just jungle will be in front of the window. The plates at the breakfast buffet changes every day. The restaurant at in front of the beach is also great, expensive too. Don´t forget to visit the ruins of Tulum, Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen and if you have time go snorkeling around the beaches..

Room Tip: Try signature casitas, they are located beside the lagoon or the canals.
