“A wildlife watchers paradise”

Having just returned from a 2 weeks stay at the Riu tequila i can honestly say that we had a great time, upon arrival the check in was very quick and the staff were very friendly, first impressions were that it was very nice, within the grounds there are Coatis, Carakis, wild Turkeys and Iguanas, the Iguanas are of a fair size too, but you may have to look more closely, there are monkeys also at the Riu Yucatan, which you also have use of the facilities when down by the beach. Right, back to the hotel review, the food was of a good standard, however i feel they could do with more choice, the meats can tend to be quite fatty with no attempts made to remove it, it could also do with being better laid out as the queues could be quite lengthy at times, all in all a good experience. All staff appear to work tirelessly including the ground staff and are very approachable, the grounds and rooms are well kept, with plenty of hangers and space for your clothes with the rooms cleaned daily, it's a little off putting that people can see straight into the bathroom area, but they do provide a screen, would suggest an upper level (only 2) apartment, however you'd miss out on feeding the Coatis, naughty i know but they are so cute, there is a short walk to the beach but there is a golf buggy that seats around six which goes down and up quiet frequently, we tended to walk to the beach as it walked off the breakfast slightly, once down at the beach there are plenty of loungers to go about and the beach and coastline are picture perfect, you can also walk a fair distance out in the sea before you reach neck height, there are plenty of fish to been seen (pinch a bread roll) naughty again but come on,who doesn't)), some upto a meter and half in length. There are refreshments and snacks to be had at the beach of the Riu Yucatan, cannot comment on the quality of the food as we lived off fruit and ice cream whilst down there (why is the fruit always nicer abroad? or maybe it's because the UK is crap with the times regarding exporting in etc...) there are pelicans, eagles and cormorants flying overhead, watch out for the squirrels if you're in the shaded parts, dropping husks from the trees, the beach guys were a bit of a pain, but got to know you around day 3 and left you alone, the beach is safe to walk up and down with it being an all secure resort. Some areas of Playa Del Carmen are quite shady but they're easy enough to spot, there is a little shopping complex nearby for the usual gifts and knick knacks, the other facilities you get the use of are the Riu Playacar and Riu Lupita, we didn't venture into those, the evening entertainment was of a good standard, however it could get a bit crowded as the residents from the Mexico Palace over the road tended to gather here as apparently the evenings from what i heard were quite sedate there, so get there early, everyone appeared to gather round the Kiosko bar which got a little too overcrowded, but the bar underneath was quieter and i found the staff more friendly, the sports bar was nice which was air conditioned but was quiet noisy with the air hockey an pool tables, from here you can also get snacks etc... there is plenty of things to do outside the resort with trips etc..... We decided to do the Coba Mayan Traditions, however this is not for the less able and would suggest doing this on a cooler day, it was very informative and educational, hats off to the guides that took us round, Marissa and Ricardo. Would definitely consider returning to Mexico if it was the only place available as i/we would like to try others in and around Mexico. Enjoy

Room Tip: Just go with the flow and stop being picky.

Stayed 19th-26th April with my fiancee.
Before arrival asked for a certain room and the room to be decorated for my fiancee birthday all was granted, brilliant considering the resort is very busy.
Our room was lovely and cleaned daily.
Never seen service and cleanliness like it staff work hard constantly.
Pool area was nice with constant activities to par take in you fancied it.
Evening entertainment was ok but bare in mind the entertainment staff also do the activities around the pool by day so long days for the entertainment staff. hats off!
Food was daunting for first few days as there was a vast selection where anything was available it was all good quality and served in the beautiful restaurant.
We ate at the steakhouse good also.
Booking isn't really a problem as you could book between the hrs 7-9.30am approx.
The Beach:- the walk isn't an issue 5-10 mins if ya able. Beautiful white sands great sea and plenty of beds loved it. Food at beach was ok but yacatan got busy as all resorts could use this for lunch. We didn't use or visit Riu playacar for lunch.
tbh the lunch food at tequila was a lot better.
This really is a great all inclusive all you can eat and drink constantly.
You will put on weight here because life is to easy.

Few things:- I wish large younger groups were,nt aloud at this resort as they would quite often wake us up at 6am stumbling back from wherever, this also affected the swim up bar to a certain extent as it seemed they couldn't handle their drink and just loud.
This place is a little paradise so quietness to an extent is essential and also not fair on the families.
Basically the activities pool is a lot quieter.
The day we left was when the swim up bar was at its quietest (gutted).
More plug sockets in the room would be nice.

All in all a great place set in beautiful well maintained grounds where a week just isn't long enough.

We booked the Riu Tequila for ten nights. Gave preference to the Tequila over Playacar and Yucatan due to the excellent reviews. Upon arrival we were informed that the hotel is oversold and we would be moved to the Riu Playacar. Disappointing but no big deal for us, we work in the travel industry ourselves and understand how things work. Anyhow, one night we went back to the Riu Tequila and politely asked if we could try their dinner buffet so we could at least see what we had initially booked. After all we had booked the Riu Tequila in the first place, and were involuntarily moved by them. The manager Sabrina was outright rude and refused to let us have dinner at their buffet. She made us feel like idiots in front of her staff and other guests. In view of the fact that THEY had oversold their hotel and had moved us INVOLUNTARILY, our request to try their dinner buffet wasn't that unreasonable. Needs management training.

A nice vacation, but nothing special. It was a good deal, because unlike the rest of the RIUs in the area, this resort was not immediately next to the beach. There was a road and a sister RIU separating us from the beach, which for us was fine. It was a pleasant 10 min walk or a 3 min shuttle, not bad for a $600ish all-inclusive 5 night 4 day vacation. The other RIUs were significantly more expensive.

Food at the buffet was adequete, the restaurants had some good food. Our fav was the Asian restaurant, their fried ice cream is to DIE for. Service and pool must have been just ok because I don't remember! We stayed in a basic room and it was ok as well, nothing special..they pushed two beds together for us but didnt fill the middle with anything which was annoying. the resort itself was really beautiful tho. Lots of greenery and well manicured. The night life was almost non-existant on the resort. We didn't venture to the other properties but our night club was empty. We were very close to Tulum and other attractions.

It's a vacation though, so you gotta have a good time. Coulda been better tho!

+Beautiful Resort
+Good deal bc not right on the beach
+Good restaurant food
+Close to a lot of cool excursions and Tulum.

+-OK buffet food and service

-Don't even remember the pool, so probably wasn't great
-Bad nightlife
-Out-dated decor in our room, beds pushed together but with nothing tucked into the middle

Our family of four went the first week of April 2012 and had a wonderful time. The staff members are very accommodating and professional. The resort is beautiful, and the food is out of this world. There are so many choices about how to spend your day and what food to eat. I do recommend that if you stay for more than one week, then you should probably bring larger clothes to wear the second week.

I recommend renting the scooters to get around downtown Playa Del Carmen and also around to the other three Riu resorts that you have access to. Also, if you want to do any of the excursions not included in the all-inclusive package, I recommend going off the hotel property and purchasing them in the strip mall located just before you get into Playa Del Carmen. Its the same tours and you will save a lot of money.
