“Amazing Staff!”
Reviewed 18 February 2012

So to be honest the rooms aren't amazing! and first impressions weren't great . . . . but honestly I have never stayed at a hotel where the staff go so out of their way to make your stay exceptional! The food is really good, they try really hard to ensure both quality and variety is consistent and of a high standard. The variation helps on a 2 week holiday with access to the other Riu Hotels, shame its not for dinner though, and people consistently stated that this hotel was the best for food.
So notable staff;
Enrique @ the Pool Bar - manages a very busy and popular bar with ease! Absolutely hilarous, and great bar tender. You will defintely laugh a lot here
Arsenio, Oswaldo, and Nancy - what a classy professional team! Great times, amazing cocktails superb service,
Waiting Staff - always so highly efficient and accomodating
Entertainment Staff - Led by Pablo, Alex, Israel, Maria and Carla - all spend so much time ensuring that both the daily sport activiities and the evening show are great! Above and beyond the call of duty at all times and multi lingual
Honestly I cannot re-iterate enough how much the staff really make this holiday - fantastic! wonderful atmosphere.
Great facilities across the group, wonderful beach, perfect location! Thanks

Room Tip: You will not be bored or disappointed!

My partner, Paul, and I had a great time, we returned on 16.02.2012 and spent 14 nights at the resort.

The beds were a little hard, however, a s has been previously pointed out, can be remedied with a mattress topper. We were able to visit other resorts, Yucatan and Tequila, which offered more in the way of evening entertainment than the smaller of the resorts, the Playacar.

Staff always friendly, polite and attentive.

If you do plan to travel and get around try to ADO, local bus station in Playa de Carmen, so much cheaper and more fun using the local transport to all the tourist attractions, at a fraction of the cost, wish we we had done it sooner.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the entertainment area if you have young children, which is block 4, and those close...

We booked a Signature Vacations 5 star Mayan Mystery on the Beach vacation and ended up at the Riu Playacar. It was not a 5 star resort (but maybe classed as one because you can visit some of the other Riu resort pools and restaurants). But we still had a great two week vacation and for the price we paid we would do it again no problem. Ended up being $2,300 a person all taxes in from Calgary mid January for two weeks. The staff was friendly and always smiling, we loved the food! in the buffets but hated the a la carte dinners - we tried the Grill (rib steak) and Mexican (I was hoping for much better here and was surprised). You need to sync up with the restaurant times. If you miss breakfast from 7a-10:30am then there is a continental buffet available from 10:30a-noon. Some people were upset they had to wait until noon to strap on the feedbag - but it suited us just fine to have some fruit and light breakfast - then we would just come back again in a few hours and have some lunch too if we were still hungry :-) Lunch is noon-4pm when they bring out more items besides snack food. From 4-6:30pm is only snack food again until the dinner buffet is opened. There is lots of variety - and every day I thought I would limit myself to only having a few items and try the rest another time - but it was hard and I always ended up overeating. I love the skinny tender porkchops, the salsa fresca and the guacomole! We thought the house red wine was very good for house wine and enjoyed it every night with dinner. The staff works very hard at the restaurants.

We had a room in Bldg 3 on the main level - was loud because other guests have no respect for being quiet. Also you can hear the person above you "clicking" around all night in high heels. Yes the mattress was very hard but we still slept good. Our room was clean and the towel animals were fun. The shower had plenty of hot water - although can be a bit dark in there! Yes the TVs are tiny but we did find English channels to watch and kept up to date on the news from around the world when we wanted to - even found a few good shows to watch on the couple of nights it rained and we just wanted to stay in and relax. Some of the commercials are in Spanish but the shows were in English on some of the channels. We didn't like any of the liquor in the room dispenser, (but the beers and the water were good) but found a few favorite drinks at the bars/lounges on site - try the Russo Blanco and the Mariachi! We found the drinks strong and the bartenders friendly at all of the bars/lounges. We hung out at the Lobby bar and made lots of new friends and thanks to Alberto and Ramos our bartenders who were lots of fun!

We never had a problem finding a lounger poolside or beachside, and lots of umbrellas and shade the majority of the time - but we did notice during our second week it was quite a bit more filled up than our first week (we went the last two weeks in January). I think a lot of guests from the other Riu resorts come and hang out at the Playacar because it is beachside. We had fun playing ping pong and taking some water aerobics and rhumba dancing poolside.

We liked the location - you can walk into Playa but we always cabbed it for $7 each way. They have great shopping at the shopping plaza right across from the resort - could find pretty much everything you can find on 5th avenue in Playa - without as much hassle and calling to you so that was nice as we find that gets tiring in a short amount of time.

We went on one tour to Coba booked through our Signature rep - and had a great time climbing the pyramid. We took the ferry into Cozumel on our own one day - in hindsight we should have rented a driver for the day and toured the island as it was kind of a carbon copy of hanging around on 5th avenue - but it was still fun to go look and eat and drink :-) Most of the two weeks we just de-stressed, hung out, ate, drank, relaxed and just had a great time. I'll save my review of it not being a 5-star for Signature Vacations - as they were the ones who billed and sold it as that . . . but as far as the resort goes we had an excellent time! and don't regret if for a second - go have fun and be on holidays!

Room Tip: Bldg 3 had a great location but we were on the ground floor and it seemed a bit loud at times. Possi...

We were there for a week and returned last week. The hotel is very clean and the service is excellent. The entertainment people work so hard to keep you happy and they were the best!!They have awesome night shows and we were never bored. The food was excellent also! I am amazed at how well the workers work and how accomidating they are! The beds were hard though so we asked for an extra two blankets and a foam pad which helped tremendously. The rooms did smell a little musty but once we turned on the A/C and kept it on, it was all good.

Yes, they were fun at the pool bar...the bartender Enrica was so much fun. Also, Oscar and Marie made sure everyone was entertained and having fun. I would definately travel there again and stay there!

I was thinking how to title the review "RIU catastrophe" or "Could be good 3 stars resort". I chose first one as we paid for 5 stars. I will not compare it with RIU Palace; let’s compare it for example with 4 stars Barcelo Maya beach we visited last year.

Resort:

It is very old. I would not say it is going to fall apart but the stucco is definitely going to fall off in many places. RIU Playacar is located on the beach, people from RIU Tequila and Lupita has to take a walk 5 min and 30 min correspondingly.

Rooms:

Yes as many people mentioned, there was a mold odor. When we returned home all clothes smelled after being 10 days in rooms closet. The shower drain was not completely clogged but it was working hardly, there was always couple inches water. Never was fixed, but they tried. Yes 19’ CRT TV………. Don’t ask me about available channels, it was repulsive to watch. You will get a real key with big plastic stick from you room and another one for the safe. Do they know about plastic cards? Be aware there is 50$ fine if you lose them. Mattresses? Yes, it was like on the desk…….
The room was very clean. 2$ tips was working well, no complaint.

Food:

That was the real catastrophe. Ola Cuba! No, not so bad but close to….
Yes you can always find something on breakfast or dinner but don’t expect the variety you can see in normal 5 stars resorts.
I will focus mostly on the lunch as I never seen it before. The main buffet is closed; you can only go to the beach buffet. All people from RIU Tequila are there as well. Make sure you are there at 12 pm. The tables are not served. No service at all. You will see 2 big boxes with spoons and forks and everybody touches them. Did they wash their hands? You can only hope… There were some salads, french fries, sausages and hamburgers.
Nothing to eat unless you grew up with McDonalds or came from Country of evergreen hamburger.

Beach:

White sand,. Don’t expect the same water cleanness as you can see in jungle located resort. There are houses around as it is the city. All of them have the drain. Y, Mexican drain…… You will see the staff picking up plastic cups and plastic straws.
???? yes I asked myself the same question. Why not?

Location:

You can walk to Playa de Carmen and enjoy a big flee market with crazy prices.
