This is by far one of the worst resorts I have ever stayed at. We stayed the week of April 12 to the 19th. It is most definately not a 5 star hotel. The staff was extremely nice, however, it does not excuse having ants in our room or my daughter getting head lice from Spa Azul across the street at the sister hotel (The Royal). Our patio door in our suite was broken and the size of our upgraded suite is smaller than most standard rooms in other hotels (suite 218). The food was o.k., however there is no "kids corner" like in most 5 star hotels and the buffet is a joke. The pool is small and you can never find a pool chair or beach chair unless you wake up at 4:00 am. There is no beach. You have to climb over sandbags to go into the ocean. I have never experienced this at any Bahia Principe Resort or Beaches. This hotel was not our choice as we were part of a group, however we will never return to any Real Resorts again. The head lice is just the icing on the cake and both my daughter and neice who had their hair done at the spa contracted lice. Therefore the lice obviously comes from the same place. Bottom line, go somewhere else if you want something a little more high end.

We just got back from our 1 week stay and wedding at the gran porto real! We cannot say enough wonderful things about this amazing resort! The food, staff and hotel itself exceeded our expectations! Our kids, friends, and family LOVED it! It rained on our wedding day so all our plans had to be changed but everything worked out perfectly and probably for the better! It was such an incredible and special day! I wish we could do it all over again! We will be going back for sure! We absolutely fell in love with this place :)

Just returned from 7 awesome days!!! The resort is amazing!!! Very friendly AND helpful staff, super clean, wonderful oceanfront room, great food and lots to do.

Our maid, ANA, kept our room spotless and the bathrobes and slippers were a nice touch. We stayed in room 331 and had a great view of the ocean, resort and beach and it had a very large semi-private balcony.

The Albatros buffet had a wide variety of food for every meal and the staff were always there to see if you required anything else...drinks, coffee, etc. You HAVE to be there on Steak night...totally awesome!!! Maria's restaurant was nice but we preferred Il Pescatore, the Italian restaurant. Hose was our waiter on both occasions and did a fantastic job of seeing to our every need. The 24 hour sports bar always had great food, coffee's or drinks, which you can get any time of the day or night.

We tried kayaking, snorkeling and took the bike tour, all of which are free. Rodrigo took us on the bike tour to some Mayan ruins and was always smiling and joking around with us. Yes, there are sandbags on the beach but I'd sooner see that than to lose the beach all together due to erosion. They WERE NOT an inconvenience, there was NO smell and the staff were there every day raking up the seaweed and cleaning the beach areas. Yes, the beach in front of the resort is a bit rocky as you go out but the beach area by the pier at the east end of the resort is very nice.

5th Ave is full of shops and restaurants and can be a bit of a madhouse at times with all the merchants calling you to come into their shops but a simple "No Gracias" will suffice as you keep on walking. IF you're buying Mexican silver BE SURE it is stamped at least .925 or better. .950 is the best and ALWAYS barter... you should never pay the asking price as it's inflated 50-300% or more.

I rate this resort a 5 and as far as the staff, a 6. A couple of bucks, as a tip, always helps and they are very grateful for it. This includes waiters, your maid and the bartenders. You won't regret it.

ENJOY!!!

Room Tip: Get an oceanfront if you can, anywhere on the 3rd floor but away from the pool bar is quieter. Room...

We recently stayed at the Gran Porto for 7 days and it was amazing!!! The hotel is beautiful and eccentric and very clean, food is amazing, however the staff is what made my trip. Spent alot of time in the pool and ALESSI and ENSO were amazing. Had a Great time with them. Other Staff that were important to my trip was Chicken, Jesus, Ivan and Brenda. Couldn't have asked for a better vacation. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need and more. I have stayed at this hotel 6 times in the past and their has only been 1 staff member that was rude and her name was Samantha. Did not care for her attitude at all. GRACIAS to ALESSI AND ENSO for all the fun!!!!!

Room Tip: I have been here 6 times in the past and the Jr Suite OceanFront View are by far the best.
