“Perfect Beach Front Hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2012

This hotel was a wonderful and relaxing piece of paradise! We would definitely stay there again.

My husband and I searched for a hotel that was close to Playa Del Carmen but also kid friendly. We wanted a hotel that had enough amenities for a smaller kid (2 1/2 at the time). Mahekal was great because it has direct ocean/beach access and also has two pools. There were tons of other families with toddlers and younger babies. We were very glad to see we weren't the only ones!

Everyone was very nice and friendly. The staff was great and very accommodating. We loved our ocean front room. It was so beautiful and literally right on the beach. It was also great how shady the area was right around the room with lots of palm trees. My son could play in the sand very easily without getting burned.

Another great thing to this hotel was the number of foreign travelers you'd run into. There were people there from all over Europe and other parts of Mexico. We really loved the international feel of this simple, yet elegant, "no frills" hotel.

We also loved that the hotel was only about a 10 minute walk to downtown. We loved going to eat out for dinners. It was fun to venture out at night, but stay close to the hotel during the day for breakfast and lunch.

The security at the hotel is top notch. My husband accidentally left our iPad out on our front porch over night and it was still there the next day! We always saw security folks patrolling the beach to keep the guests safe.

We thought the food was good, but we enjoyed also eating out to get some variety. The menu options can get old after a week of staying at the same place!

Overall, this hotel was a great value for the money we spent. I felt that we got all of the important amenities we wanted and used. We didn't need a lot of the other crazy activities other hotels offer, so this hotel worked out really well for us.

Room Tip: The ocean front rooms are amazing! One thing to note is they are windier than some of the other room...

My wife and I spent seven nights at Mahekal and enjoyed our stay. If you read all the reviews, you get an excellent idea of what it is like. Quiet, comfortable, laid-back, picturesque, right on the beach and close to Town (5th Ave.).

Vis-a-vis other resorts, the beach is wonderful (one of the best in Playa), but the two pools are nothing to speak of.

Accommodations are basic, nothing fancy. The beds are very comfortable. The food is pretty good, not great. Breakfast is the best meal there, lunch and dinner are OK. Dinner is Mexican, not Continental, but it is good. Unlike large resorts, the choices are limited. You can chose breakfast and either lunch or dinner daily. If you want to hang at the beach all day, have lunch there and go out to town for dinner. If you take a day trip, have dinner at Mahikal when you get back.

All drinks are extra, but are very reasonably priced. I found the main bar to be quite dull. Then again, it was not busy season.

The gift shop is very limited, so if you need something it is best that you walk to town.

There is nothing to do at night, but town is a walk or cab ride away. Their idea of no internet and TV in the rooms is a noble attempt toward ultimate relaxation, but is out-dated. Most people, including ourselves, were using smart phones and tablets to check email. We added international phone service for a week, so our cell-phone usage was not an issue. I feel they should re-think and have TV and internet in the rooms.

So, if you want a less expensive place to stay, which is on the beach and close to town, and is used as a base for trips into town and excursions, Mahekal is the place to stay.

Dear Ed I,

Thank you for posting your review on Tripadvisor. We always appreciate all the feedback on our resort and were delighted that you had a good time during your stay.

We have mantained our concept of an authentic Mexican resort in which we offer a unique opportunity to disconnect and bond with your loved ones, family, friends, children or all. In order to do so we believe that disconnecting is an important part, we offer as you rightly indicate one of the best beaches in Playa and beautiful lush garden surroundings within the resort to lay on your hammock, a dip in the pool, a massage near the ocean, and enjoy the pleasures of true nature.

We do offer internet in our lobby and bar so that if you do need to connect at anytime you can do so comfortably at your convenience and at no cost.

If you are more in the mood for a little more fun and party, La Quinta Avenue is only steps away so our guests may also live the vibrant spirit of Playa del CArmen and then come back to the peace and quiet of Mahekal.

We look forward to your next visit when a little rest and relaxation is in order.

Sincerely,
Victoria Campos

After much deliberation my fiancé and I picked Mahekal for our destination wedding, the last weekend in April. The hotel and everyone that worked there exceeded our expectations! It was was the perfect place. We had 75 guests join us and everyone loved it there.

We wanted to stay within walking distance to town and Mahekal is about 2 blocks west of the start of 5th ave., the main street with all the shops and restaurants. This location also puts you on the best part of the beach in playa del Carmen, away from crowds and with a clear stretch of beach and ocean, not blocked by boats and sandbags. Everyone had fun spending time between the beach and the 2 pools. The pools are on the smaller side but one has great views of the ocean and a nice hot tub and the other is next to a sand volleyball court and the bar that serves up drinks at happy hour. They're just the right for this size hotel. Not massive but never too crowded.

The food always tasted good and was fresh. At breakfast there's a buffet of fresh fruits, pastries, oatmeal, yogurt, granola, and juices, plus you can choose a dish off the menu like huevos rancheros, etc. Lunch was good especially the ceviche, shrimp fajitas, and fish tacos. Usually at lunch and dinner the seafood options were always the tastiest.

The rooms are basic but charming. We had an ocean view room just one back from the beach and had a nice view. We checked out all our friends rooms and we thought for all the areas that the second floor rooms were the nicest. The AC worked really well in our room, but it was nice to have the windows open during the evening to get that ocean breeze.

The wedding itself couldn't have gone better and that is in large part to our wedding planner Dulce. She was so nice and helpful. She covered everything and made us so comfortable. The food was great, the bar was insane(bringing out trays of drinks and shots all night), the dj was so fun. We had the mariachi band and they learned two songs for us perfectly!

Overall Mahekal feels like your on your own private island resort but your actually just steps to all the action in town. It was the perfect place to vacation and get married and we are already planning our trip next spring to go back with all our friends!
Thanks Mahekal!

Dear Alicia B,

Thank you for posting your comments on Tripadvisor. We appreciate your detailed report of the resort and are pleased that overall your experience at the hotel with your friends was a good one.

You portray the resort as it is, a unique resort in which we value authenticity, nature, connecting with our dear ones and unplugging from the technology we have grown so attached to. We strive to provide a few, or as many days as our guests like, of peace and harmony.

We look forward to your coming back soon and bringing or making new friends while here.

The Mahekal is a unique experience. Reviews are correct about the serenity and staff. Grounds are tended to daily and the location on the beach is unmatched. It's a real authentic experience, not a flashy, sterile environment. I will say that our 2nd floor ocean-view room in the north end of the complex was more jungle than ocean.
The food was very good but the atmosphere was even better. Loved having no phones or TV in the room. While there we had rain and wind quite a bit so eating dinner under a large, open palapa-style roof with the slow drip of the water was a wonderful experience and filled your senses. Loved the Mexican buffet on Sunday with the mariache band. Happy hour in the bar was a great place to commune with the other guests while sipping a terrific margarita.
We enjoyed a couples massage by the beach where the thunder and rain were added benefits for a relaxing experience. Once again, the staff at the spa were terrific. Actually the only unpleasant staff experience happened during check-in at the front desk. Not the most friendly encounter there. Overall, it was a nice place for getting away from it all even though PDC itself was a bit boring.

Room Tip: Upper floors provide a great place to listen for birds. Musical entertainment at dinner was varied...

My husband and I recently stayed at Mahekal for our friend's destination wedding (which was also at the resort). While there we stayed in the Ocean View Room but since we had 20 friends also staying at the hotel we got to see a bunch of the other rooms.

Overall, this place is a nice place to go if you want to "get away" and have a nice relaxing time. The hotel is pretty quiet and chill, so I would recommend it for families and couples. Given that meals are included, I found the food to be good buffet style food. It's nothing that's going to blow your mind but it's pretty good. If you want to have a nicer meal you can always leave the resort and go into town.

Hotel Positives
- Very clean
- Comfortable beds
- Right on the ocean - lots of nice lounge chairs on beach where you can order drinks/food
- Short cab ride to "going out" area of Playa del Carmen
- Great beach front - warm water and soft sand
- Very safe
- Nice private patio with hammocks attached to each room

Hotel Negatives
- No phone / internet in rooms - since we were part of a group this made it difficult to communicate with each other / figure out where / when to meet
- Room fixtures (with the exception of the penthouse room) need some updating
- There are some underwater hot springs that give off a sulphur smell so every once in a while you get a wiff of a strong stinky odor (this would also be true for the other hotels along this beach front also)

Comments on rooms:

Garden View Room - One of our friends stayed in this room. The room is basically the exact same as the ocean view room (maybe a little bigger). This room still has a nice private patio that overlooks a grassy area but you cannot see the ocean at all.
Ocean View Room - My husband and I stayed in one of these rooms. Overall, I don't think it's worth the extra money. By "ocean view" they basically mean partial ocean view as in if you stand in just the right spot you can partially see the ocean. We wound up spending most of our time at the beach anyway, so we didn't derive much value from the "view". Our room was so close to other rooms we really didn't want to leave the blinds open (as others could see right in) so then you really can't see the ocean.
Ocean FRONT Room - Here you have a full view of the ocean. However, you're literally just meters from the beach and beach lounge chairs. You'll have a great view but will have no privacy on your patio due to the proximity of the beach. Also, if people are noisy on the beach you'll definitely hear it in this room.
Penthouse - Gorgeous room. The bride and groom stayed in this room. This room is much more modern than the rest of the rooms here. It has an amazing view of the ocean since it's 3 stories up. Also has a gorgeous patio with hammocks, outdoor shower and large chaise lounger.
