If you want to be in the center of the action in Playa del Carmen, Maya Del Mar is the perfect spot. A few doors down from the busiest intersection on the pedestrian walkway, it's surrounded by great restaurants, bars, brand-name shops, and more. Head half a block
down Calle 8 for a swim or to catch a refreshing evening breeze.
Maya Del Mar isn't new by any means, but has been upgraded to a comfortable degree. It's quirky and Caribbean cool! Large rooms, massage studio, continental breakfast, helpful staff. Loud music from nearby businesses may not be for everybody; ear plugs recommended.

Just around the corner from loud and lively Calle Quinta, the pedestrian only, tourist corridor with a multitude of restaurants, cantinas and kitchy-shops, lies the calm, no frills Maya Del Mar. With barely a change since the 90's when I used to stay at this property under its former masthead, The Jungla Carribe, this little property is convenient in several ways.
First, it's just a block from the beach. There's a restaurant on the property that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks and the food is good. There's a currency exchange right next door. It's one block from a pharmacy and a bank. The place is clean and no bedbugs. Also, it has a pool in a shaded garden, large enough to swim laps in. The rooms are spacious and some are now equipped with kitchenettes. Every room has a balcony, some facing toward Calle Quinta, so you can be on your secluded lanai, having a drink, and still be right in the heart of the action.
The bathrooms are large, with hair dryer, large mirrors but no tub. Showers only. I was sad to note that the remodel also meant no more bidet, but maybe people didn't know how to use them.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. It helps if you have at least some Spanish, but since mine is rudimentary at best, they were great with helping me plan outings, making phone calls for me and gathering info. The maid service is daily, leave them a few pesos and you'll have a sparkling room complete towel sculptures.
The hotel also offers a complimentary, continental breakfast of toast, juice, coffee and cereal with milk. It's not the Ritz, but the coffee is good and strong. If you want something more fancy there's a French Bistro two doors down that does croissants, cafe au lait and so on.
Wi-Fi is only in the lobby/courtyard by the pool. There are some nice tables with umbrellas in the garden courtyard, if you must be in the internet, it's a nice place to spend time.
One other addition to the Maya Del Mar's offerings is a tiny spa where you can get a massage, facial or mani-pedi. It's very low key, no frills, but the prices are pretty reasonable and the work satisfactory.
If you want five stars, if you don't like old Mexico, if you are a light sleeper with an aversion to the night life, go somewhere else. But if you want a friendly, safe, reasonably priced hotel in the heart of the party this is the place. This is my second year booking with the new owners and I plan to return next year.

Room Tip: Higher floors or rooms on 8th Ave are quieter, or opt for a suite in the courtyard.

As everybody knows... dont look at the pictures to make yourself believe its a nice hotel. In this case i must admit that i did the same. The rooms are outdated and could use a renovation. Especially the bathrooms are not that fun to walk in barefoot. But then again its a budgethotel so i can't blame them.

Nothing wrong with a budgethotel. Especially this hotel cause it's situated in the heart of Playa del carmen where all restaurants, shops and nightclubs are. Also just 30sec from the beach. So be prepared for a night full of music in your room... if you dont like it bring earplugs with you for a good night sleep or go out and come back when nightlife ends.

Okay hotel for the price they asked. Staff is very friendly.

For all the wifi addicted travelers... there is NO wifi in the rooms. Only downstairs in the lobby.

Great, colorful, small hotel with very kind staff. Rooms are a bit old-specially bathrooms.

Pros: 1 minute to the beach, on 5th street so easy to reach everywhere. You can walk from Ado Playa. Nice restaurants around. Room 405- big with 2 beds & nice balcony.

Cons: Very loud until 6 Am. If you're looking for a quiet place this is not. If you're looking for a nice place and don't care about the music coming from outside -24 hours... this is the place. After 3rd day we were fed up with the noise and moved to Tulum.

3rd floor- stairs- noone to help you with your luggage...This wasn't cool...

We got this hotel thinking we would take a break from hostels so we could get a good nights sleep for a long day ahead of us and it looked pretty nice online. We got to the room and it was dirty, the bed and pillows were rock hard but worst of all was the music playing from the club across the road. From 10pm-8am the music was so loud that we couldn't hear the TV in our bedroom when it was on full volume (not an exaggeration). Would definitely not recommend.
