Jungla Caribe is close to the beach, right on the all pedestrian 5th Avenue, surrounded by good restaurants. The lobby has an atrium filled with tropical flora. Ask for a room away from the street, that will be quieter. Prices are reasonable.

Room tip: Ask for a room away from the noisy street.

We showed up at the airport to find that our reservation at an all-inclusive resort was never actually booked by the travel agent, so had to find a hotel during peak season in Playa Del Carmen. Jungla Caribe (apparently in the process of changing their name to Maya del Mar) was the third hotel we stayed at and by far the best.

It looked kind of shabby at first- a shopping cart in one corner, and old tile work patched with concrete, but Eugenia and Julio at the front desk were wonderful- going so far as to look up local opticians for us and giving us a list of three in the area.when I lost my glasses in the ocean.

It's an older building with the charm of an older building- cool handmade light fixtures and tile-work or really bright paint on every surface. It's much more of a true reflection of traditional Mexican architecture than the newer resorts, and in my opinion more comfortable.

Also, the plants in the central courtyard are gorgeous. The family that owns this hotel has done a lot with a small space. Great place to stay- saved our vacation..

Room tip: There's no elevator, so if you're not fit, take a second floor room.

Booked two rooms through Expedia, upon arrival, the non-English speaking/understanding front desk, informed us, using sign language and Google Translate, that there are NO rooms available. They did confirm our reservations and had copies printed out, but no rooms available, go figure!
First they were as cooperative, as a five -year-old that you are trying to feed vegetables to. Just kept on saying No and that's it. After a little argument they became slightly more cooperative and tried to send us to one of their sister hotels a few blocks from theirs, upon checking the rooms there, not only were they a Huge downgrade, with no refund offered, they were disgusting to say the least.
We demanded to speak to a supervisor or manger and were declined that as well. their reply was: 'they are busy"!
We had to go around the hotel and look for them ourselves. After we found the person in charge, they came back to the front desk with us and had a lengthy conversation with the front desk personnel. Unfortunately for us that did not do much good and we were offered another alternative sister hotel, which was about 10-15 min drive from the location. the pictures on the site looked good and we decided to take a chance with it. took a cab, with our money, and went there. The rooms there were in no way better, if only slightly larger. we had to cancel that reservation and look for an alternative accommodations.
Nothing but horrible, disgusting memories are left from that place and their "friendly" staff.
If you have to sleep on the beach, it might be a better alternative to staying with Jungla Caribe ;)

When we arrived to this hotel it seemed nice, a little out dated furniture. On the first night the hotel was very noisy from drilling and pounding from renovation work within the hotel (at 2 a.m.). The bed was terribly uncomfortable. They said they had wifi only in the lobby, but it also didnt work there. So no wifi either. Out of 4 days they cleaned our room once and that was the only time they had changed our towels. One of the days we didnt have hot water in the shower. We looked for another place to stay but it was raining and we had spent half a day looking for another place. Eventually we've decided to stay and enjoy playa. They offered us a breakfest in another hotel "maya azul" which was louzy, and in that hotel there was a bad smell of mold.

Have nothing to say about the service in this Hotel, Excellent Service. Very quiet for a 5th avenue hotel. Tons of things to see around every corner. Tons of vegetation. A trip for the eyes. Must at least go inside and visit
