Just wrapped up my 5 day stay at the Iberostar Quetzal Resort and can't wait to go back. Below is an extensive but honest (the good and the bad) review of my stay at the resort broken down:

Hotel:
the resort itself is immaculate. It's big enough that you don't feel cramped but not huge enough where you get lost. It's kept perfectly clean always. No business center but front desk can help with printing boarding passes etc. ton of wildlife throughout which I loved. Others might be scared off or annoyed by the noise.

Rooms: Very clean. All rooms have balconies and the free wifi reached all the way to my room. The showers have no door or curtains not so private so keep your door closed. Fridge isn't kept too cold, maybe it's an energy saving thing. No snacks and no clocks in the room. Weird. Also very few outlets. None by the bed. A/C works great which is definitely needed in September. There are also no elevators at the resort so if you're staying on the 3rd floor, you have to hoof it all the way up luggage and baby carriage and all. Beds are on the firmer side as the mattress is on a board not a box spring.

Staff: overall VERY friendly and helpful. The tour desk could use some work. I've noticed that most of the front desk staff are very young like just outside their teenage years so you can get some blank stares back when asking questions. But they will try their best to help out. They're also not to pushy about their timeshare spiels so that is very appreciated.

Food: here's the bad news. Food is AWFUL. I suffered through breakfast and just had a hotdog by the pool for lunch but ate out for dinner 4 out of the 5 days I stayed. Buffet is just down right sub par IMO. The Japanese restaurant is fun but the food was overlooked. Food around the resort is bland. They

Beach: straight out of a dream. Crystal blue water and white sand. Kept clean for the most part. Drink service is prompt.

Pools: HUGE! They run in the deeper end at over 5ft deep but I like that. They always have some sort of activity going on at the pools. They have beachside/poolside grilling (burgers and hot dogs) beginning at noon everyday for a quick bite. Also an ice cream stand and drink station pool side.

Entertainment: there is always something going on at the resort, from yoga, Zumba, aqua aerobics etc..all fun. Didn't check out any of the nightly entertainment but rest assured, you won't be bored.

This is my second time at an Iberostar, first time at this property. I WILL BE BACK! We had an oceanview room. Literally walking steps to the beach. The pool area was about 100 yards from our front door. The service was excellent and loved all of the amenities. Not sure what happened with the food tho....it wasn't as good as I remembered it when we stayed at the first Iberostar. It's not a deal breaker for me tho b/c food to us was for fuel, not to spend 24/7 at the buffet. I WISH we could have stayed here instead of splitting our time with the other property.

Our ocean-front room was Great! Our patio was 10 steps to the beach, and could always find lounge chairs. Clean beach, and always something going on, volleyball, exercise classes, Frisbee or other water games. Food was OK. The complex was very large, with 2 Main areas. Lower area was probably the older of the two. The upper area was the Main area where you checked in, booked tours, and had several shops. Between the Upper and Lower areas was jungle, narrow walkways, and sometimes steep walking. Best food was in the Upper area, and special dining was mainly there also. Lobby Bar was also in the Upper area. The Resort next door, was also a Iberostar and we were allowed to eat and drink in also. Probably a 30-45 minute walk to the Ferry dock and the main shopping area of Playa. Staff were very friendly, helpful, and we very attentive to our requests. Playa is a beautiful area, but would rather stay closer to the shopping area next time.

Room tip: Ocean front are great, with 2nd or 3rd floor for best views.

Just returned from 2 weeks in paradise. The hotel is situated on one of the best beaches you can find and the hotel grounds are fabulous with a jungle area that is teeming with wild life, the monkeys can be loud in the morning but it makes for a relaxing holiday just walking thru the grounds, the pool is large and very warm and plenty of sun beds,we never had problems getting one .the food was very good my wife being a fussy eater always found something to eat and the a large Carter restaurants are worth a try I would recommend the Japanese. The star friends work tirelessly all day and the night shows are good.the rooms are large and kept clean every day. If you want a feel of Mexico I would recommend this hotel

Room tip: Block 23 is near the pool

We went here for two week for our honeymoon at the beginning of September '16. Overall we had a brilliant time, but there are a few minor areas for improvements:
- They play music, loudly, at the poolside for most of the day. This can be annoying for anyone, who, like me, just wants to relax and read. Would be good, if they could turn it down a notch.
- The buffet food is mostly delicious and there's plenty to choose from, but a lot of it is lukewarm, including the sushi. In my opinion the hotel needs better facilities to keep the food at appropriate temperatures.

Now to the pros:
- Our room, in building 26, was large and on the top floor. We got the occasional visit by monkeys, which was great! There's a small fridge in the room, which isn't particularly cold, but has a nice selection of drinks and gets topped up whenever you finish a type of drink (or just take it out of the fridge). We'd read some reviews about the bed not being particularly comfortable, but we found it okay. The bathroom was fine too. Everything worked. No issues. Our maid did a great job cleaning and tidying every day, usually in the early afternoon. And we loved all the towel animals!
- There was a large variety of food to choose from at the buffet restaurant. We always found something we liked. The desserts were delicious too, and there was a good selection of fruit and veg. I especially enjoyed the large selection of juices at breakfast (my favourite was the orange juice with chaya) and the scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection!
We went to all of the specialty restaurants, and the Japanese was the best! We also enjoyed the steak house and the Mediterranean, though the Mexican and the Italian weren't as good, in our opinion.
- We didn't make any use of the entertainment, but there is plenty available at the resort. You can play football on the beach, participate in the pool games, bingo, volleyball, to name a few. They also have shows on at the theatre every day, but we somehow never got round to watching them. There is a pottery stand by the poolside, where, for an extra charge of around $40 depending on what you pick, you can paint a plate, bowl, turtle or many other items. We did this twice and had a great, relaxing time. They touch it up and glaze it afterwards, and it's definitely worth the money- not just for children! Ours look amazing!
- The property itself is stunning, with a wonderful white beach and lots of wildlife. It's ideally located for excursions: We went to Chichen Itza, Ik khil cenote, Xcaret, Tulum and Akumal- all great days out!

Overall I would recommend this resort, and would definitely go back, especially considering the price we paid.
