“Fantastic resort, great for a honeymoon!”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Iberostar Quetzal Playacar for our honeymoon in April 2011. We had a fantastic time and I would recommend this resort to anyone. We dream of going back!
We had never stayed at an all-inclusive resort before so to us this resort was absolutely perfect for our needs and great value for money.
The resort was gorgeous and like a jungle -and filled with animals, we saw peacocks everywhere and lots of other types of birds, as well as lots of other animals I had never seen before (sorry cant remember the names now) - it was really nice so see so much wildlife all around us. Great for photographers! The buildings all looked really nice i thought and the main buidlings were connected by wooden walkways over jungle and ponds with mini waterfalls so it was really beautiful.
Our room was very nice and had everything we could need, and was kept lovely and clean and the mini-fridge was always well stocked with drinks. We had a jungle-view room and it was lovely to sit on the balcony watch the wildlife - we saw monkeys and birds all the time! Perhaps the decor was a little dated but you know we thought it gave the whole place a lovely charm and we wouldnt have liked a modern looking hotel as we think they always look a little cold - the look of this resort was warm and bright and just how i imagined mexico would look!
The beach was gorgeous and we had no problem finding a sun lounger. There were staff available to take drinks orders on the beach, or you could help yourself to soft drinks or get an alcoholic drink from the beach bar. Which we did frequently! Same with the swimming pools which we thought were really nice too and really clean considering how many people were using them!
We really enjoyed the food in the buffet restaurant which had a really big choice of different foods so we felt there was something for everyone eg for dinner there wouldn be lots of salad choices, traditional mexican fajitas etc, burgers, stuffed vegetables, or nice italian pastas etc. Neither of us is a veggiterean but it looked like there was an OK amount of choice if you are. And there were lots of mini desserts so you dont have to feel guilty about trying a couple of different ones (it was too hard to choose!!). The breakfast buffet was amazing too - i have never seen so many different choices for breakfast!!
We LOVED the cocktails - we sampled many different ones and they were WONDERFUL!
We thought all the staff were fantastic - really nice and helpful and smiley. And the bar staff always remembered what drinks you liked which i thought was a nice touch! (how do they remember?!!)
The evening entertainment was what i would call "good old fashioned family fun" .... maybe not our usual taste for entertainment but we did enjoy it (cocktails helped!) and could see the entertainment staff were all very talented and worked really hard to make sure everyone was having a good time. Some nights they had professional shows (from outside entertainers) which we thought were great such as a 70's funk night and a magician.
The only thing i would say is that they could add to make this resort PERFECT is that they could have a bar on the beach which is open until late - as after about 7pm the pools and beach bar shut down and it all moved up to the main complex. We would have loved to have sat at a beach bar watching the surf and the sunset but that was only a small little detail that we would have liked.....
We went on some excursions which we arrange through our tour operator (Thomas Cook) which we booked at the hotel on the first day - we swam with dolphins, visited Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Coba/Tulum - i really recommend these trips they were awesome and so glad we arranged it at the hotel as they arranged the minibus collection and drop off so we didnt have to worry about how to get around outside of the resort.
We were there on our honeymoon and it was perfect for us as a couple in our late twenties/early thirties, and we could see it would also be great for young families and older couple alike. Loved loved loved it! Cant wait to go back - we intend to return on our 10th wedding anniversary!

We were at Iberostart between May 28th and June 1st. The grounds are wonderful. The beach is great. The pool is just ok - I didn't like that you had to get out of the big pool to walk down to the pool bar. We didn't visit the specialtly resturants but the buffets were not good. Everything had the same bland taste. I actually lost weight while we were there. We have only been to Mexico one time before and stayed at the EL CID Riviera Maya. The Food and the Pool there is better than Iberostar but the Grounds and the Beach at Iberostar is better. Rooms and Service at both are good. We had room# 2146 at the Iberostar, third floor. We could see the ocean through the tree tops which gave a very jungle feel. There were black birds in the buffets that would land and eat from the buffet.... I didn't like this at all. Plus, you had to worry about who they were going to poop on. Luckily it was my husband instead of me.

Room Tip: No Elevators but only 3 stories. If you don't mind walking the steps stay on top floor so you w...

My wife, daughter (20 months) and myself spent three nights at this hotel from May 14 to May 17. The hotel is very well kept and our room was very decent. The hotel is excellent for families with kids, there is a lot of wildlife roaming around the premises and our daughter loved that. There are flamingos, ducks, lizards, turtles, fishes, outside of our room there were peacocks (we were in room 2603 - any room in that 26 rooms unit would be a great location) and we could also see lots of monkeys!
Due to the architecture of the hotel, only a very small % of rooms have an ocean view. When we got to the hotel we were assigned a room in the middle of the property with no ocean view. I thought this was going to be a problem. But it was completely the opposite. Our room was very close to the restaurant and we enjoyed our daily walk to the pool / beach areas, where we could see all these animals.
The staff were always very friendly. There was always something to do during the day, activities at the beach / pool area during the day and a great show at night.
The beach was great, but I think the hotel needs to have ashtrays of some sort on the beach, since the smokers have no education and just throw the cigarette butts to the sand.
Another suggestion would be to have wireless internet available in more areas and not just at the lobby of the hotel, and please don´t charge for it.
Overall, I would definitely recommend the Iberostar Quetzal hotel to everyone, but specially to families with young kids!

Room Tip: Our unit, 2603 was great. It was located halfway between the lobby and the beach. If you have kids...

Trip with our two sons (early 20s & late teens). Sons enjoyed the daily volleyball games staff organized and the variety of wildlife on premise. Staff efficient and responsive. One needed repair in our room was quickly handled. Evening walks to lobby to pay for and utilize 15-30 minutes worth of WIFI was annoying (but the large lobby bar staff helped with drinks & attention. If you go make, your on premise 'restaurant' reservation early.

Room Tip: we booked (& enjoyed) two junior suites facing ocean. Many of the regular rooms had nice views...

My first ever time that i have felt compelled to write a report on a holiday.

Firstly the hotel-Excellent food in both buffet and speciality restaurants, Rooms spotless, very spacious and the beds excellent (although some reviews had whinged!!). Pool and beach very clean and so warm. Weather excellent. The grounds are so pretty and enhanced by the abundance of interesting and well cared for wildlife.

A special thank you to Arumee and Michaela from the Quetzal bar who were always timely with the rum+coke and brandy + diet coke, very smart (as were all the staff) but most importantly happy to chat when time permitted.

As for trips, i can recomend the "Trainer for a day" Dolphin experience at Delphinus at Xcaret, the snorkelling at Xel-ha, the history of Chichen Itza and the night life of Coco Bongos. All trips booked with Grant the Thomas Cook rep (again a first, a pleasant, sensible helpful rep, well done Grant). We all know you can source them a little cheaper if you shop around but compared to a holiday you are saving peanuts and the couriers, timeliness and quality of transport to all of these trips was excellent.

So much more to see, we are going to have to come back and see you again next year. Thank you Iberostar

Room Tip: We were in block 28 room 2804. Very quiet throughout the night.
