My husband and I stayed at the Iberostar Quetzal Playacar for our honeymoon in April 2011. We had a fantastic time and I would recommend this resort to anyone. We dream of going back!
We had never stayed at an all-inclusive resort before so to us this resort was absolutely perfect for our needs and great value for money.
The resort was gorgeous and like a jungle -and filled with animals, we saw peacocks everywhere and lots of other types of birds, as well as lots of other animals I had never seen before (sorry cant remember the names now) - it was really nice so see so much wildlife all around us. Great for photographers! The buildings all looked really nice i thought and the main buidlings were connected by wooden walkways over jungle and ponds with mini waterfalls so it was really beautiful.
Our room was very nice and had everything we could need, and was kept lovely and clean and the mini-fridge was always well stocked with drinks. We had a jungle-view room and it was lovely to sit on the balcony watch the wildlife - we saw monkeys and birds all the time! Perhaps the decor was a little dated but you know we thought it gave the whole place a lovely charm and we wouldnt have liked a modern looking hotel as we think they always look a little cold - the look of this resort was warm and bright and just how i imagined mexico would look!
The beach was gorgeous and we had no problem finding a sun lounger. There were staff available to take drinks orders on the beach, or you could help yourself to soft drinks or get an alcoholic drink from the beach bar. Which we did frequently! Same with the swimming pools which we thought were really nice too and really clean considering how many people were using them!
We really enjoyed the food in the buffet restaurant which had a really big choice of different foods so we felt there was something for everyone eg for dinner there wouldn be lots of salad choices, traditional mexican fajitas etc, burgers, stuffed vegetables, or nice italian pastas etc. Neither of us is a veggiterean but it looked like there was an OK amount of choice if you are. And there were lots of mini desserts so you dont have to feel guilty about trying a couple of different ones (it was too hard to choose!!). The breakfast buffet was amazing too - i have never seen so many different choices for breakfast!!
We LOVED the cocktails - we sampled many different ones and they were WONDERFUL!
We thought all the staff were fantastic - really nice and helpful and smiley. And the bar staff always remembered what drinks you liked which i thought was a nice touch! (how do they remember?!!)
The evening entertainment was what i would call "good old fashioned family fun" .... maybe not our usual taste for entertainment but we did enjoy it (cocktails helped!) and could see the entertainment staff were all very talented and worked really hard to make sure everyone was having a good time. Some nights they had professional shows (from outside entertainers) which we thought were great such as a 70's funk night and a magician.
The only thing i would say is that they could add to make this resort PERFECT is that they could have a bar on the beach which is open until late - as after about 7pm the pools and beach bar shut down and it all moved up to the main complex. We would have loved to have sat at a beach bar watching the surf and the sunset but that was only a small little detail that we would have liked.....
We went on some excursions which we arrange through our tour operator (Thomas Cook) which we booked at the hotel on the first day - we swam with dolphins, visited Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Coba/Tulum - i really recommend these trips they were awesome and so glad we arranged it at the hotel as they arranged the minibus collection and drop off so we didnt have to worry about how to get around outside of the resort.
We were there on our honeymoon and it was perfect for us as a couple in our late twenties/early thirties, and we could see it would also be great for young families and older couple alike. Loved loved loved it! Cant wait to go back - we intend to return on our 10th wedding anniversary!
