“Great option to stay in Mérida”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2012

I enjoyed my stay at Piedra de Agua hotel. The building is beautiful, a traditional old style casona turned into hotel. I specially liked the terrace where the pool and restaurant are, it is relaxing and nice, with its hammocks and a great view of the cathedral towers.

Its location is ideal, right next to the main plaza and cathedral, within walking distance of many of Merida´s attractions and restaurants.

The service is great. The staff is super attentive and always doing their best to meet your needs. The food and beverages are also very good. The breakfast was delicious and abundant. On weekends there´s live music in the restaurant by the terrace at dinner time.

The rooms are rather small but comfortable and nicely decorated, I just feel they lack some of the commodities you´d expect from a boutique hotel. There´s almost no place where to put your clothes in, just a stick hanging from the ceiling where you´re supposed to hang your clothes and a few drawers. The bathroom is clean but super small, the shower is ok but you can´t even sit in the toilet properly because of the lack of space, I really found this uncomfortable. I don´t think the bathroom meets the expectation you have in this kind of hotel, it really stands out as a bad thing in contrast of all the other nice things in this hotel.

Still, I´d recommend this hotel if you ever visit Mérida. The service alone stands out and it is a nice experience to stay at a tradicional building right in the historical center of the city and enjoy all the great walks you can have from here.

We stay there for 4 nights and end up in 3 different rooms and all things that could go wrong went wrong, from a lock that couldn’t be open for 3 hours at 10 pm to forgetting the soap when they clean the room, I have to say that all the people that work there is really friendly and they try to make up for the miss happenings but at the end there were just too many. Also to consider is that the hotel has no parking (even when their web say they do), so dollar for dollar try Rosas y Xocolate.

Room Tip: There are two things to ask before they give you a room the bathroom siza and the bed size

Our family of four spent 3 nights at the Piedra de Agua. The location cannot be beat given it's very central spot in Plaza Grande and where there are regular street fairs, events, etc. The entryway is completely nondescript and unpromising, but once you enter, it's a very interesting internal courtyard area, and the pool/garden area out back is a fantastic respite from all the walking and heat.

We were upgraded to the Presidential suite upon our arrival, and the place didn't seem all that full. The original characteristics of the building and rooms are still very much intact which makes this a very special hotel. Fortunately some nice updates have also been made - especially the aircon! - which makes the hotel room more comfortable. Is it a luxury high end place? Not really, one can see how the place can have 'more' to make it more high end. But that may also detract from the original characteristics of the building which makes it very interesting and charming, while being comfortable and very convenient.

There were minor 'flaws'... parking is in a separate garage that you pay extra for (but within walking distance, not expensive and there's also valet), some may not enjoy walking up to their rooms because there are no elevators, others may quibble about limited airconditioning in more public areas of the hotel, etc. But overall they do not detract from a very unique experience that was comfortable, central and allows you to enjoy a piece of a beautiful town even when one is back in the hotel.

I just want to start by saying that the staff was the friendliest and most fun of anywhere we stayed- they never stopped. We came in and the street in front of the hotel was blocked off for pedestrians only and one of the gentlemen at the desk went out to find our car down the street to get it and take it to valet, and that was just the beginning. They like to get to know the guests and provide personalized service and are even happy to help you with your Spanish if that's what you want. Most of all, the people who work here are genuinely nice and they want to help you to enjoy your vacation.
Aside from the great service, the building is beautiful. It was built 125 years ago and it has a lot of character. We enjoyed our balcony overlooking the bustling Merida downtown and the church. The room itself was smaller with very high ceilings and decorated nicely. They have a great bar out back, a little pool (although I saw a couple of kids having a great time in there), and a pizza oven. We tried the pizza and we liked it, we liked the cocktail menu even better and they had a small band one night which was cool. The location absolutely cannot be beat- this place is in the middle of everything. I did not find it to be too loud, but I live in San Francisco and I have low standards in that department. There are two sets of doors to get to the balcony which muffles the street noise enough for us and I think for most people, but if you are very sensitive you might ask for a room in the back.
